How true is that (if at all)?

I think I read on a news website today (BBC, perhaps) that we ingest our micropolastics from the air anyway.

I use to work in a supermarket packing shelves while at College. I never forget that amount of little plastic bits you'd find floating in the bottles that were there for a while and we would have to dump!

Turned me completely off buying bottle water unless absolutely necessary.

Send a sample to a proper testing last such as Alt testing in Newbridge.

If you buy the 5l bottles there won't be any deposit.

I'd also imagine that a water filtration unit on your water tap would be cheaper then 10 years of bottled water, while reducing the microplastic.

the price is doubling due to a tax that is being applied. A charge that you can recoup if you drive to a shop to claim a rebate on the duty paid.

swop the word duty/tax/deposit as you see fit. But the price is going up along with the inconvenience. Bin charges will be going up too.

the only fake news, is that this scheme is a good idea. Shop in the north to avoid, buy in bulk and avoid the hassle and save money.

Good point about having to use a car. If we could even crush the cans or bottles before bringing them back it wouldn't be too bad space wise but no they had to be pedantic about it. A proper Irish way of doing things.

In Netherlands it was a shop assistant who done the refunds in my local store, He always laughed at the sheer amount of Heineken crates we used to return.

They will be shredded and reused in bottles or other products. There are reusable PET (hard) bottles, but not in Ireland.

These are more environmentally friendly. It should be the long term goal to have some larger producer in reusable PET.

On glass, it would be great if all microbreweries got together and agreed to reusable glass bottle system. Its unlikely to ever happen. Opportunity missed.

Same here, going on €400 a year for bin collections. Just stick them in your bin if it's more convenient and watch the scheme sink. It requires public participation to succeed.

It would be great to be Eamonn Ryan for a day .. just look at the annoyance I could cause to so many people that don't care about climate change or who only think short term etc.. I wish

The deposit scheme is not perfect. However, buying packs of 12 or 24 bottles of water is just silly. There is a huge long term cost to all this plastic.

People that buy lots of bottles water can hange behaviour save money in the process.

Examples

Use tap water with a filter if necessary (almost free now that water charges are abolished). Buy one off refillable PET bottles or stainless steel containers. Loads available

Buy 5l bottle without deposit and pour it into the reusable containers mentioned above or flasks. Same refreshing water, no price increase.

People spout fake news about the scheme, refering to the deposit as an extortionate tax (which it's clearly not) and ignore the amount they are spending on bottled water. The spout in everyones home that emits perfectly drinkable tax free water (i.e a tap) is a good place to start saving money, yet they ignore it or put out posts saying the water is toxic ..undrinkable. Some of these are not aware of microplasics and the toxicity and dangers they pose

I am not the only person here that suggest tap water, with a filter if necessary. We cant all be Eamonn!

Not sure what posts you’re referring to. I have a perfectly good 3 stage water filtration system in the house. I have perfectly good recycling, compost, glass and waste bin at my back door. We recycle everything into these bins that are collected bi weekly

I have groceries delivered by a van that does many local deliveries

i now have to take plastic and tims by car to a machine. …..Well actually I won’t, it’s super easy to buy in the north and ignore the green washing

I'd already consider myself a highly responsible recycler.

The thought of having to fork out extra money for cans and bottles, preserve them so that the bar code doesn't get damaged, haul them back to the supermarket, stand in a queue, deal with potentially faulty machines (it'll 100% happen) and then go stand in another queue to get my refund just p1sses me off no end.

Not a fan at all.
