The bones (in python) of what you are looking for can be found here: https://github.com/Tonyslogic/tout-compare

See: dataPopulation\makedbFromESBNSmartDataFile.py. This only covers import, but export is a trivial extension.

There are lots of examples elsewhere in that repo to throw up graphs.

The 2024 budget has increased the tax free allowance from €200 to €400 for FiT

Makes sense. €200 was too low and no one was going to declare the small amounts above €200.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,325 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

I wouldn't be declaring €400 either in fairness...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,152 ✭✭✭✭KCross

You'd need to export ~2000 units to hit that €400 allowance.

The vast majority wont be going over that and if they do it wont be by much.... except for the tiny few big battery DIY'ers who are importing by night and exporting their battery by day.

If FIT remains generous a lot of folk will stop PV heating their water and charging their car from late March to early October and instead do it overnight on cheaper unit rates, this will bring the non-battery masses into play. ~2000 units works out around 10units a day over 7 months.

This is good as it allows PV stablise the grid when non-renewables are in high demand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

And with 2 names on the bill its now €800 AFAIK?

Yes doubling the tax free allowance for feed in tariff is very good news, not just for me personally, but in general to stimulate people to let their PV / battery systems stabilise the grid. This is imho more important than renewables themselves as it is the solution for the periods we will always have without sun or wind and for coping with peak demand

I'm currently (high demand time early evening with very low wind and zero solar PV) dumping 3kW into the grid for the next few hours, only to automatically buy it back again, but 5-6 times cheaper, in the wee hours when the country often produces more renewable electricity from wind than we need

Had a quick look at Yuno Energy since bonkers told me they were my cheapest option... FIT is a very low .14c.

Are bonkers.ie broken/useless for anyone with PV panels? No FIT rate comparison and i dont really trust the providers they pick.

Yuno energy is there current flavour of the month (do they pay bonkers to get up there??).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,142 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Bonkers is still very much geared towards anyone with a dumb meter and doesn't consider solar

They don't consider things like peak rates or EV charging when looking at smart plans either

Their whole website needs an overhaul

IMO when your contract is up your supplier or the CRU should be required to send you an email with a price comparison of what you would spend with every provider using your last 12 months of usage

It might encourage more people to switch

Someone put together a decent smart meter plan comparison spreadsheet on that Facebook group

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,749 ✭✭✭yankinlk

On day night meter and in contract. Can i switch tariff but stay with same provider without any penalty?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 6,425 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

They usually let you move if you sign up for a new contract

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,749 ✭✭✭yankinlk

Thanks! I wasnt sure. Glad i asked and glad i rang. They still say im on a DAY/Night meter - and they are telling me i cant change for 3 weeks. no idea why - just computer says no. kinda irrritating and almost worth breaking contract but i think ill stay and ring back in a week or two to swap again.

It’s just a step in the provisioning process of a new smart meter. No matter which provider you choose they will all have to wait a certain period before they can onboard you. It’s to allow the meter to establish a connection and ensure that it can reliable send its data back.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 6,425 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

Is your smart meter showing up on the esb network website?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,749 ✭✭✭yankinlk

  • Registered Users Posts: 824 ✭✭✭HotSwap

I assume you got a day / night smart meter installed. Which smart tariff we’re you trying to move to?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 6,425 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

It needs to at least show up on the esbn website first, it can take a few days.

I'd also wait until you start getting data from it too

Click the eV rate and adjust the time and rate to match your boost

  • Registered Users Posts: 824 ✭✭✭HotSwap

Cool, missed that. Still would be good to know / configure the time ranges for the peak / day / night...

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 ne_dami

As far as I know, peak / day / night times are standard across the board, and it is only the EV rate (or boost) that varies.

I don’t think its feasible for a supplier to work out what other suppliers tariffs would cost as there are too many and it could get legal as there are so many discounts etc.

BUT what should be very easy to do is for your current supplier to show you at the end of the year (or maybetwice a year) is to make sure you are on the best tarriff your supplier has. Suppliers should be duty bound to ensure that their customers are on the best tarriff. With smart meters this makes it even easier to do....

+1 to that. Spar don't need to tell me the cost of bread versus their competitors. If companies were required to do that, everything would cost us more as they would need an army of people for every service we bought. Nor IMO does it fall to the likes of Bonkers or other resellers of energy contracts.

Sure, you can strongly argue the relevant regulator should offer that service. CRU in this case. But it wouldn’t fall to each individual supplier.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 6,425 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

They do.. but they compare the "standard rates" (remember that article in the summer with EI having the cheapest standard rates?)

Had a little dig, They do publish the cheapest EAB for standard plans, discounted plans and for new or existing customers..

As a pdf.. Which is so accessible 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,555 ✭✭✭wexfordman2

Each supplier should provide a service where you can upload your data to them, and they then give you the best package they have based on that.

The thing is, with smart metering it is very very possible for providers to provide you with exact comparison billing, something more important now that you have time of use tarrifs, and the regulator should be ensuring that this feature is compulsory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 244 ✭✭curioustony

My preference would be for every supplier to provide their plans in a standard format mandated by the CRU, and the CRU provide an offline tool/spreadsheet/app that will use HDF and plans to do a proper comparison based on personalized data

This would be preferable. Would make it easy to compare across the board, directly against each other.

It would likely also promote proper competition amongst providers, especially showing figures for unit rates, etc. rather than fudging and hiding behind 'percentage decrease'

Does anyone have experience of building up FIT credit with a supplier who pays bi-annually (SSE in my case) and switching before the credit was paid?

I am due credit for the period April to when I switched supplier in August.

Every time I call SSE customer service, the rep is of no help .. I'll call you back, lo into it etc. etc. and never does.

I can no longer log into my account online.

Will I be paid? Are they trying to fleece me? Anything I can do about it?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 336 ✭✭JayBee66

I am with SSE. The best way to contact them is through their Twitter support account @SSEAirHelp

Click the envelope icon to the left of the Follow icon to send a message. You'll be able to get hold of someone with more time and you will get an answer.

Make sure to include MPRN, SSE account numbers and full name and address in your message.

Plenty of people on here have changed supplier and received a credit cheque in the post. Maybe not from SSE but they are duty bound.

So with the smart D/N meters will it always be 11pm to 8am and no shift with the time change?

I'm on an existing day / night plan and not sure what time my night rates are now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,064 ✭✭✭Mr Q

The night rate times still move when the hour changes. So even with a smart D/N you would be on the winter hours currently.

This is what has been communicated to me when changing to a smart D/N.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 6,425 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

And Ive verified that by reading my actual meter too. Only have used 1 day unit so far since install. (and the car starts charging at 11pm now.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭Scoobydoobydoo101

I left them earlier this year and still waiting for a payment too. Their last email to me mentioned that it will likely be paid 2nd week of Nov. But wer very fluffy on the response so I am not holding my breath!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 336 ✭✭JayBee66

That sounds about right. SSE calculates the two FIT periods in May and November. The payment appears in the June and December bills. As neither of you are customers now, you'll probably get your cheques in November.

NB. I am not an employee.

interesting comment at the end where it says that those identified as low usage will not get the credit. So what happens to those of us with pv where our usage is low ?

It say's this at the end. "Any account that is registered as a vulnerable customer, has a hardship meter installed or has low usage due to microgeneration will not have their payment withheld."

  • Registered Users Posts: 529 ✭✭✭snor

Yet it says those with low usage due to micro generation won’t be withheld. What is considered low usage? Solar (myself included) may have high usage (EV) but low bills (PV and battery). All very vague.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 6,425 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

I wonder what the low use bar is... Could be hitting it on our outfarm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,571 ✭✭✭con747

At least they say there is an appeals process you can take up with your supplier if need be, whether it would be of any use with some suppliers is a different matter though. I think it's more geared up for vacant properties connected but using very little units.

Fingers crossed that they are talking usage rather than net cash outlay. Lots here buy plenty of electricity at cheap rates and balance that against FIT for a negative or zero net figure.

“low usage electricity account” means a domestic electricity account which is not a micro-generation account, identified by the distribution system operator as having less than 150 kilowatts of electricity consumed in each period of three months in the four consecutive periods of three months occurring in the period beginning on 1 July 2022 and ending on 30 June 2023

Howdy. So I got solar installed in June this year. Was originally with Bord Gais, and switched to Energia when they lowered their rates last month (have a PHEV and going EV soon anyway).

Long story short Bord Gais never paid me for any FIT, they also didn't charge me the extra €50 early exit fee, so I don't know what they are up to.

The actual final bill is the bottom arrow, which does download. But the higher blue arrow (I guess the adjusted final bill which should have €50 exit fee and FIT applied) does not work. Given it has been a month now, I'm starting to get suspicious.....

I also can't download my HDF export data (also very suspicious to me...), but thankfully I already had it downloaded before.

Since I never had a bill with FIT applied I can just go from when they were installed in June, and so 915kwh exported at 18.5c per unit means they owe me €170.

The question is what do I do now? I did email them a couple of weeks ago to no response, so I guess I'll have to call. But if the person on the line has no clue what I'm talking about what do I do next? I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt, but after locking me out of downloading my export data I think they are taking the mick now.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 6,425 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

    "150 kilowatts of electricity "

Ah FFS seriously. It's a law/bill/whatever and they don't have the units correct.

Technically no household would qualify then (that don't have microgen).

  • Registered Users Posts: 824 ✭✭✭HotSwap

Maybe if you charge the car / turn on the microwave / electric shower / kettle (actually buy a few more kettle off Amazon)…..

I got into reading legalisation during covid; a mistake like this is minor compared to some of the things I’ve seen in the last few years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 139 ✭✭alexf1

Anyone get SSE FIT credit for November yet? Just got my latest bill today and no sign of FIT. Same happened in May, didn't get credited til June, but just wondering if it's just me or everyone?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭ParkRunner

(EDIT need to look into it further) Seems revenue are going to chase the income declaration for FIT. Anyone else get notification of something similar on the PAYE system?
