After filling with Gas AC in Kona worked for less then two weeks, not more then 350km. Have to contact garage again, it must be a leak somewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,930 ✭✭✭zg3409

If it's not under warranty then bring it elsewhere. Specialists have UV leak detection and the know how and parts to detect and fix AC leaks. Before regassing they are supposed to check for leaks as gassing a leaking system is bad for the environment. Its illegal to not do this in UK I think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 174 ✭✭Basilio

They did apparently check whole system otherwise would not fill with gas. I was 99% sure there is a leak, they insisted it is normal to re-gas so often as "gas naturally escapes by the time". Another bunch of cowboys, thankfully I refused to pay them for re-gasing.

OH recently bought 2019 64KW Kona, how would she check if hers was replaced?

Today, after 3 visits and leaving 191Kona for a whole day garage established the cause of AC fault. According to them evaporator needs to be replaced and earliest appointment after spare part delivery would be 23.10.2023. It take 4 months and 5 visits to get AC working. Was provided with 231 ICE Manual Scala, prefer 191 Kona.

Wonder, what percentage of 2019-2020 Konas (offered for sale by dealers) actually have AC working?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,149 ✭✭✭spakman

AC on my 191 failed last year or year before. Took 3 visits to find the issue and fix, but is fine since.

The motor noise started shortly after and the dealer told me its "normal motor noise" even though it only started a few months ago.

Is it worth spending the extra 3k for the Platinum trim? Not a lot of differences really. You get powered "leather" seats, auto dim rear view mirror, a "seamless horizon lamp" (whatever that is), HUD, Blind spot monitoring and collision monitoring. I thought some of the safety tech was mandatory but any blind spot items must not be included.

There is also an in cabin camera system as standard across the trim levels. Other than using it to check on a small child in the rear of the car, I can't think of anything else you would use it for. 🙂

I still like the new design though. Looks better than the old Kona and the size increase will be welcome. The old Kona always felt cramped and a little low rent for the price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 801 ✭✭✭nialldinho

Do those prices include the grants?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,316 ✭✭✭fafy

They always quote after grants & vrt have been taken off, and exclude delivery etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,489 ✭✭✭jlang

The parallel page for the current Kona EV is explicit about quoting after grant prices and the worked PCP examples both go from the quoted price to euro payments (although that was only valid to Sep 30th) so it's probably safe to assume the prices won't change and are intended to be after the grant (but no longer topping up the grant to 5000, as they did in the summer, although one could argue that was more an end-of-line discount).

I'd expect the page to update saying this pretty soon.

Differences in the specs mean the middle model is now "big battery, lower trim" where it was "small battery, higher trim". Also, some of the increase in quoted range across the models is just from fitting bigger batteries at each level.

Does the new model still lack adaptive cruise control?

Not sure how retailers are doing the sums in the new Kona EV 65 Platinum,

listed as 43,995 on Hyundai’s website:

But dealers are pricing it at between 46.400 & €46,995.

This one is €2.405 more than the RRP, could be a metallic option included in there, but it sounds an excessive add on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,406 ✭✭✭1874

How did you find out it needed to be done? who did you contact?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,310 ✭✭✭Miscreant

At that rate, buy an Ioniq5 or go for a KIA Niro EV! The Kona is no way a 46k car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,316 ✭✭✭fafy

Tbf not only is that the top spec new Kona EV price, there is a lesser spec for 3k less with the larger battery, the New Kona EV is also way bigger than the old one, wider and longer, now its quite similar to the ENiro, in size, boot size is just a tiny bit smaller then the E Niro, the new Kona is about 30% bigger than the old model, has the V2L 3 pin plug in the back, interior also got a significant upgrade, probably putting it ahead of the E Niro, it has also just passed out the E niro in range, and the cheapest larger battery Kona EV variant. is less than the entry level E Niro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,778 ✭✭✭cython

It's hard to know as the spec sheet only lists "Cruise Control - Conventional" on both trims, but both also have Highway Drive Assist which is described as "HDA uses the information from the forward-facing camera and radar sensor as well as the navigation data to control the speed, direction, and following distance of the vehicle.", of which adaptive cruise control would seem to be part and parcel......

Also, why the hell is it FWD if it's now using a platform that has be primarily designed for EV?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,300 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

EV platforms are not exclusively RWD, tends to be manufacturers that determine choice of RWD rather than EV/ICE "format"

Any way to confirm if a Kona is part of the recall and if it has had the battery replaced - without contacting a dealer? e.g. if I had a VIN could I look it up somewhere?

Contemplating getting a Kona at some point within the next 9-12 months, probably a 2020 refresh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,101 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

Ordered one on Saturday. Very impressed with the drive, look & finish. Plenty of toys. My first ever new car in Jan ‘24. As previously said, a good bit bigger (boot) than the existing model and nicer lines. Still deciding on colour but favouring atlas white with black leather.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,316 ✭✭✭fafy

May i ask what the pricing was, before a trade in is involved, as i see dealers on done deal charging over €2,400 above the Hyundai, RRP prices.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,325 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

RRP prices don't include delivery, metallic or paint protection (which is a rip off and I strongly advise against it)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,101 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

No worries, I opted for the Atlas White / black leather / platinum - €46,495 before the grant.

    10k deposit / trade plus 36 x €580 plus €14k after the instalments.

    5yr unlimited mileage + 8yr battery warranty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,316 ✭✭✭fafy

I was quering how the RRP of a Platinum 65, went from €43,995 on the Hyundai website, to the final price of €46,495, which is after Grants, unless delivery + metallic makes up the €2,500 difference

I can confirm the Platinum trim has HDA (Highway Driving Assist) which has adaptive cruise control.

What is it with Hyundai and there logo lately? It always looks like an afterthought. Just look at the current Tucson and where it is on the back. It's like they had it all designed then went sh-it the logo where will we put it I know let's stick it in the window above the lights. Just looks crap and now on the Kona at the front again it's like they went sh-it the logo where will we stick it I know just put it there on the bonnet just over that cheap looking light strip looking up the Sky as if that does not look like an afterthought. Surely under it on the angle or better yet on the flat above the reg plate would have been a better place for the logo? They have done away with it inside there cars altogether well the electric ones anyway which is strange.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,101 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

Back is fine. Cannot see the issue with front location either. You suggested slapping it in the middle of the front bumper over the number plate ? Now that’d really look daft IMO

Ye where it is on the back of the new Kona is good but I still think it looks a bit lost on the front.

This to me looks much better. The logo/badge is in the right place there.v Much better than where it is on the Kona in my opinion.

    From this thread

Kona May 2018 to March 2020 (this may be off and may be factory manufacture dates to not Irish registration dates)

You would need to contact Hyundai Ireland to confirm if it has been replaced. I would prefer a car where it was done.

In regard to a 2019 Kona electric vehicle with 64 battery.

I am hearing the back seat is fairly small. I have an 8 year old and a 10 year old and they simply use booster type seats.

Are the back seats ok for an 8 and 10 year old or still a bit tight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,149 ✭✭✭spakman

fine for that age, but once they take the teenage stretch, it will quickly get tight

Warning to all 2019-2020 Kona owners who are currently selling there vehicles privately.

<<mod snip>> there's a buyer out there will waist your time like nobody else. Hi is on the market for 64kWh Kona and contacted every owner who is selling at the moment. Worst experience in my life. Maybe it just me, sorry if I am wrong.

What was happening? Just a time waster?

  • Registered Users Posts: 174 ✭✭Basilio

An educated time waster. Insisted to reduce price from the level it was communicated via text and phone. Manipulates data from forums regarding 2019 Kona versus 2020. Really unpleasant experience of hard buying. Offering cash. Vehicle was cheapest priced of available in ROI and additional discount applied.

I sold over 100 vehicles in my life and never met such pushing chatterbox even across Ex Eastern Block lands. Probably I lost ability to separate a time waister from a genuine buyer at initial, first contact stage. Meeting them and letting him drive around was my mistake. Lesson learned. 😀

There's a few guys like that on here. The ones that always seem to deride anyone that doesn't automatically negotiate 30% off a deal 😅

    Lesson learned I guess Basilio.

Why am I seeing sub 20K long range Kona adverts when some dealers are still trying to flog Leaf and Zoe seconds for over 20K?

Is there something wrong with the first generation Kona that I don't know about?

I've test driven one and was most impressed. At less than 20K I'm all the more inclined to buy one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,158 ✭✭✭innrain

I own one so I can tell you what's wrong with them. The first generation Konas were what we call here "Paddy specced" meaning it was stripped down of a lot of features. Compared to UK versions it does not have adaptive cruise control or stand-alone GPS and all the gimmicks which come with these. The next year model compensates for these and also has 11kW AC charging compared to only 7kW. GPS is important for EVs long drives because it can tell you if it reaches the destination you're aiming for or not. For short commute is not important though. After that Kona is a small car which was the longest range EV at the time but 5 years down the road range is not the most important issue. They were 38k new in 2019 and 50% depreciation after 5 years is quite normal I'd say. In my view they are worth more, reason for which we decided not to sell it. The young one will start driving in a couple of years and why not.

Couple of things to watch for with earlier Kona Electrics...(Great EVs in general by the way, just a bit small in the back & boot)

    1. There was a recall of the main High Voltage Traction battery (the big one, the drivetrain battery under the car not the 12 volt one under the bonnet) for some Konas - I think some of the ones manufactured between 2018 & 2020 approx - Just do a google search for more info.. So if buying a 2018, 2019, 2020 Kona Electric, just check if it was affected by that HV Traction Battery Recall & if so, verify that it had its battery replaced under warranty already.
    2. Some early batches of Kona Electrics suffered from or subsequently developed a knocking or tapping sound when being driven. It was usually most apparent at low or very low speeds. The Kona Electric community would later refer to this as the wheel of fortune type sound. (Some Kia eNiro's were also affected as they share the same drive train). Years potentially affected as far as I can recall would be possibly from 2018 - 2020 or 2021.

Do not let any dealer tell you this is a normal sound or just the regenerative breaking system sound. It is not normal. It usually means that either the GRU (Gear Reduction Unit - like the gearbox in an ICE) or the main drive motor, or both need to be totally replaced. Very expensive if you need to have that done out of warranty, costing multiple thousands of Euros. So get a good test drive in a quiet location, do lots of stop / starts, drive at low speed & listen out for a clicking, tapping or knocking sound.

Hope this helps - personally love the Kona Electric & think its great bang for the buck as long as you get a good one!

  • Registered Users Posts: 174 ✭✭Basilio

This is just normal age related depreciation. 2019 - 2020 Leafs are now at €15k -16K, 2020 Zoe, with manufacturer`s warranty till 06.2025 you can get for 14K. I have 191 Kona for sale currently and will do a deal if interested, feel free to PM.

So for 18k-19k you are getting Kona with mileage less then 100.000km, battery replaced about a year ago, and there are even examples with motors replaced under the warranty as well. EVs prices are now in line with prices of automatic vehicles fueled by a combustion engines.

There is not that many of them in the country, in 2020 even less vehicles registered compare to 2019

    Hi,

Picked up a 2nd hand 2019 kona recently. Noticed this knocking noise. Should this be brought to Hyundai as a warranty issue ?

    Thanks
