I’ve gotten to the castle multiple times and lost interest 🤦‍♂️😂 ps2 first time around. Steam on a laptop and switch last year. Deck seems to have me actually playing games properly again so maybe I’ll go again before remake drops.

I'd bought them on PS4 but never got around to playing them and now 2-3 have free PS5 upgrades too.

RE4 is great. Strikes perfect balance between parts 2 and 3. Been a few years since I played it but did several runs when it came out which is extremely rare for me.

I still don't think we have had a third person shooter half the quality of Resident Evil 4. It's still the high bar to beat. It baffles me when I see all the love for Dead Space when all I can think of is how it was a pale imitation of Resi 4.

I've the remaster on PC and Resi 4 still is very much a classic. Elements of it haven't aged well such as constantly having to jump into the menu to switch weapon but on the whole, it's still great. I can easily recall various set pieces which were all very well designed.

I never played RE4 when it first came out, I played it for the first time a couple of years ago. It was clear to me that it's one of those games that you needed to play on it's initial release in order to 'really get it'.

The controls are infuriatingly terrible, it took away a lot of my enjoyment from the game. It's also far too long. Fairly forgettable experience and not a game I'd even consider playing through again. I am looking forward to the remake though to see if it can improve on the original.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Markitron

IMO the love for Dead Space doesn't come because of it's gameplay, it is because of the setting. Sci-fi horror is so well suited to games and is (was) criminally underserved. And yea, nothing has come close to touching RE4s encounter design, shooting mechanics and pacing.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,825 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I also don't get the complaints that the game has bad controls. It's classic Capcom design. All the old Capcom designers learned their craft from tokuro Fujiwara who had a philosophy of creating risk and reward my making the player commit to an action. If you jump in fujiwaras ghosts n goblins you are committed to that action until you land. Same in resi 4. If you aim you better be sure you can get those shots off because you won't be able to move. But if you can get those shots off you can headshot, suplex and round house kick your way to victory.

It's just a wonderfully designed game and there's even little things about it like the adaptive difficulty that Capcom didn't even advertise. For me though it's the set pieces. It's such a long game but each encounter has a Nintendo like twist on the shooting formula that it stays fresh right to the end. It took Capcom a while to recover when nearly the entire dev team moved to clover then Platinum.

It's also one of the few games I was excited about before playing and then managed to absolutely smash those ridiculously high expectations.

Well both Forspoken and RE4 downloaded for me yesterday, so I'm starting one tonight. Maybe I'll flip a coin...

I'm kidding. It'll be RE4. If I am going to play it, I want enough separation between it and the remake so the remake doesn't just feel too familiar.

Shinji Mikami and Capcom / Clover / Platinum's particular mid-late 00s vision of the third-person shooter is something that so few games - Mikami's own follow-ups included - have failed to live up to. Resi 4 obviously, but also Vanquish's focus on style and movement that so delightfully broke free of the limitations of the dominant cover shooters of the time. Exceedingly few games have come anywhere close to either in years since.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Markitron

Yep RE4's controls are perfect for the way that game is designed, if you could move and shoot it would break the perfect encounter design. IMO even the Wii version messes with the formula too much by completely changing how the guns handle. Funnily enough I played it in VR last year and being able to move and shoot made it ridiculously easy, an absolute must-play in VR but I wouldn't recommend it for first time players

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭Greyfox

I think the game is the perfect length as it introduces new ideas quite often. I also think the controls were perfect for the time. For most new players it would just take a little bit of time to adjust to the controls

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,825 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Isn't there a weird thing with the controls that you move and aim with the same stuck? I'd say it's hard to get used to that on a dual shock style controller. It worked great on GameCube but it's like learning how to walk again on PS2. I think the remasters fix that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,207 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Just played 15 mins of RE4. Holy f*ck I cannot play that game. The tank controls are one thing, but that camera is making me want to vomit. You can't pan the camera around because it instantly snaps back to behind you.

One or the other would be manageable, but I can't handle that camera and tank controls at the same time. I'm far too used to being able to pan the camera around, see where I'm headed and scan the environment, not just what way I'm walking.

I genuinely feel like my brain is swimming in my head after that.

Resident Evil 3 remake is lots of fun. I loved the way it looped back through the RPD station and the timeline is just before RE2. Great that I played them back to back as I remembered the codes to the lockers and safes :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Markitron

You will get used to it, just don't treat the other stick like a camera as in other 3rd person shooters. Leave it alone as much as possible. Oh and don't forget the quick turn.

A new animated movie is out this summer. Looks like one for diehard fans only, perhaps.

    GFWL integration was also removed.

Hope they did the same for the lost planet games.

Better late than never I guess.

I was looking through my Xbox achievements, and I popped my very first Resident Evil achievement on the 31st of January 2019. That game was Resident Evil 2 Remake.

I then went on to play Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 3 Remake in 2020 and Resident Evil Village in 2021.

I'm looking forward to playing RE4 Remake at the end of this month.

I've already seen more than I want to of RE4, but for those of you who simply can't get enough...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I'm guessing that's when the demo will release. I'm going in to preorder it today, getting a good deal from Gamestop. Hopefully it's Resi 2 like in quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I'm downloading RE7 again now it's free with ps+ I never finished it the first time due to being a big scaredy cat when playing it in psvr.

I love horror, always have but RE7 in VR is the scariest horror I've encountered in any medium. I was raging i couldn't play it properly and never got past the first house, got awful motion sickness and because I'd play it late at night, I'd be in an awful way going to bed. Sweat be dripping off me but I'm not sure how much of that was the motion sickness and how much was to how terrifying the experience was. Loved it!

Can’t wait for this. So drained of cookie cutter open world games, need a nice resi adventure that’s replayable. Have avoided all the promo for it too, I just hope it retains the sense of humour of the original as I have heard the tone is a bit darker which is worrying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I noticed I had RE6 on steam, I know it's not meant to be great but I'm on a roll now.

You know in films when people tell you not to open the cursed tomb but they open it anyway?

I enjoyed it but mostly because I played co-op with a friend for the campaigns.

It's definitely not a good Resident Evil game but it's fairly decent as a relatively well-made shooter.

The Mercenaries mode is really good.

Looks like a demo for Resi 4 will be dropping with the Capcom showcase tonight as prior have seen a leaked twitch ad for it. Also, devs said they are working on a day one patch to fix the rain.

Resident Evil 4 Remake will be out in 15 days time. Day 1 purchase for me.

Chainsaw demo is out tonight, ps5 console has a tile for it under 'what's hot' but clicking it brings you to the re 4 buy page.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,496 ✭✭✭recyclops

Just downloading now on series x, it's 10.96gb so hoping to play it in around 5/6 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Demo is live on PlayStation now. You have to go to resi 4 product page and change the edition to choose demo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,496 ✭✭✭recyclops

Played enough to know it's gonna be excellent (got to the village and fought the horde), skipped all cutscenes.

Oddly the start feels like 7 but then it's full on RE4, placement of everything feels similar as does story beats. I do really like the stealth kills

Doesn't feel as much of a step away as re4vr did but that was a tall ask

Can't ask for much more from a remake tbh, roll on end of March.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Agreed, it plays so well. The graphics are typically brilliant, that RE engine is sublime. The atmosphere is so tense and the combat is weighty and meaty. Shaping up to be an absolute quality remake.

Is Leon still doing summersaults out windows and round house kicking multiple farm hands with pitchforks?

I'm going to skip the demo and holdout for the game.

Demo has some of the foulest-looking video game food around. 10/10, absolutely would not eat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,495 ✭✭✭Underground

I just hope they haven’t made it too serious and Leon is still a comically awful try hard good guy with terrible quips.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

"where is everyone going? Bingo?" While standing beside burning corpse. Yupp keeps the wackiness. Demo was great, i can already see mercenaries being a lot of fun like it was in the original.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Finished it there, I had played the same initial village portion ages and ages ago on Wii and never really got any further in it.

It looks so nice, I have it on PS4 in the wrapper and even though I'm tempted to just play that version I think I'm better off with the remake. Plus it's getting PSVR2 support too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,917 ✭✭✭nix

I'm profoundly disapointed, i was hoping they would take what made REmake 2 done great and run with it, but nope, drop the survival horror again and back to dumb arcade shooter 😥

Oh well, day 365 bargain bin purchase for me then... maybe.. 😝

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,825 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Nothing dumb about Resi 4. When played properly it has mechanics out the wazoo. It's still imo the best third person shooter that still has yet to be topped. Anyway it wouldn't make sense to remake one of the most celebrated action games of all time as a slowed down horror game.

Well up until this game it was a survival horror series, not an action game, they could have kept the melee grounded, like using the butt of your pistol or the stock of the shotgun/rifle to get away/damage the enemey, not f_cking suplexes and round house kicks with the newton force of a horse 😆

Heck even throwing or toppling things near you to slow/hurt the enemy would be a nice progression into adding to the games mechanics, not suddenly becoming a roided up Chuck Norris 😔

It would have been a good time to improve upon how the series went, as its 5 and 6 next and they were complete poop, and if they're just going to double down on those **** shows, well thats that then 😐️
