Keep an eye out for Whitewater and their range. Clotworthy Dobbin is an awesome Brown that others can only aspire to. Ewe Rebel is one of the best IPA's that you will get anywhere, while their Hen Cock and Pigeon Rock is a superb Red that is very easy to drink yet with a sweet malt about it. Also a big fan of Hilden; Headless Dog is a grand wee ale and the harder to find Barney Brew, a peppered IPA.

"Zingibeer" now availabel in Supervalu I think. It is an Irish product and only ginger beer on market.

That Oktoberfest thing in the docklands was an abysmal event, crap beer, crap "entertainment", crap prices, crap crowd management.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,036 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

It was decent the first few years it ran then it became of victim of it's own success. I used to work in one of the offices right beside it and I remember leaving work at 5 on a Friday and being able to stroll right in and get a table. In subsequent years the line was massive from early on and there was an unsavoury element hanging around making it feel unsafe and unwelcoming.

Spotted this in an off licence in Smithfield at the weekend. Thought they were starting early.

    😂

It's not at all bad - when in date!

O/T but our local Dunnes now has an extensive Christmas section 🙄

    Scrap the cap!

Ended up at it for multiple hours one year, work went there at ~5 and then some friends came in about ~7.

Heard the same five or six tracks from the band maybe five times each.

I've been enjoying 9 White Deer, Stag Bán pale ale in my local lately. Lovely, light, balanced drop.

Unfortunately, I can't find anything nice to say about their Imperial BA Stout, though. Thought it was a flavoured mess of a beer.

Really enjoying Wide Street Brewing's Valhalla. At 9.7% it's a great room temperature sipper (I may have to pick up another one for xmas day). The tartness is offset by the warmth of the abv and the oakiness from the barrel ageing. It's fantastic to have an Irish brewery eschewing the DIPAs and hoppy East coast IPAs etc and doing something so unique but also making beers such high quality beers.

I've just bought a bottle of imperial stout that was aged for over 5 years in French oak casks. It got me thinking, what's the longest barrel aged process for this kind of beer? I know Galway Bay did one recently enough that was aged for 3 years.

Just finished an Irish Red Ale 7.5% Vol from Whitefield Brewery in Templemore..I drank it at room temperature, it's lovely, no nasty aftertaste..

    Def buy this again..

Anyone try the naughty and nice chocolate stouts from Vocation yet? Had the whipped nougat and the malted honeycomb stouts and they're amazing. Looking forward to try the other 3.

    Krombacher today for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 356 ✭✭flended12

Liked the name. Will sip over Xmas.

Pleasantly surprised with the cost of beers at the Mace just off South Circular Rd near entrance to James hospital. Tiny shop, quite remarkable how much choice of beers they can cram into a tiny part of the shop.

A White Hah Yule last night, delightful as always. Tried the O Brother/Bierhaus Red Ale collaboration, tasted stronger than the 4.7% and a fair whack of bitterness too, enjoyable.

I drink Guinness for three months in a row

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,261 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

White Hag Gola Secca, dry Italian stout. Not bad but not great, nice and dry but a tad watery for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,036 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

I tried the Bierhaus collab too and really enjoyed it, one of the better red ales I've tried in recent memory. It's funny it almost reminded what some Irish brewers would call a pale ale with the strong malt

hey lads, i have a slab of 24 cans of elevation. every can i open is basically froth. am i missing something obvious? no matter how slow i pour it into a pint glass i end up with 80% froth. any ideas?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,914 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Is it cold enough? The higher the temperature the more foam you'll get.

Are you pouring it into a macro-branded glass? Industrial lagers are bad at head retention so the glasses are etched to offset that. That will mean a huge persistent head on beers brewed to sale strength like Elevation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,036 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Low abv beers like 2/3% can sometimes be excessively frothy in my experience but 4.8% elevation shouldn't do that. Are they short dated perhaps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,333 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Have had serious issues with Whiplash Rollover in recent months in all sorts of glasses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,317 ✭✭✭emo72

thanks for replying. ive loads of different types of glasses from breweries, i usually put cans in fridge a day or 2 before drinking, so they are well cold. theres really no difference whether its a warm or a can thats been in the fridge for a month. driving me mad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,317 ✭✭✭emo72

june 23. although ive had these since last august. i store them in the utilty room and then throw them in the fridge when space arises.

Issues here with O Haras Leann Follain. No matter what glass was used or what temperature it's at absolutely no lasting head at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,333 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

All froth. Takes an age to pour/settle. Will leave it off the list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,149 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Stronger beers tend to not retain a head for very long. Not sure this is a problem.

I've never really had a head on Leann Follain. No issue with that at all. It's one of my favourite stouts.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭cunnifferous

Nothing new but just having a bottle of Lidl own brand 'Crafty' Larger. It's up there with some of the best German Helles I've had, really is!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,469 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

The Rye River "Crafty" (Lidl) "Grafters" (Dunnes) and another one in Tesco I can't remember the name of is actually really good, and cheaper than buying the same stuff under their own name 😁

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭ballyargus

I've been to that pub and eaten there.

Their drinks are excellent. If you ever get the opportunity to visit, do!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭cunnifferous

I know they are all Rye River but the Lidl beers are superior to their other supermarket offerings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,224 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

they are not the "same stuff" either, the recipes are different for the three off brands

Does anyone know where to find tomato beer? I know it exists, but I can't find it. I really want to try it.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,914 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

I don't think there are any around in Ireland at the moment. Craft Central had a Ukrainian one last year, Pomo d'Oro, but that's long gone now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,537 ✭✭✭✭L1011

That was a spambot 'asking' so I don't think they're too pressed on the matter. I suspect tomato beer is very bad for servers anyway.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,914 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Tomato beer pairs great with spam.

Solas is the Tesco one. They are different - I like the Crafty American Wheat, but the Rye River one is different (and a notch above). I'm more frequently in Lidl, but like the Grafters Extra Pale. They used to do a lovely Solas Brown Porter too.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 5,804 Mod ✭✭✭✭irish_goat

I used to think the Crafty American Wheat was one of the best value hoppy beers out there, but I feel like it's gone downhill a bit in recent years. Doesn't have the same hoppiness it used to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,665 ✭✭✭adaminho

Was there a few years ago. Funniest thing was the lad asking for a vegan menu when the walls are covered in taxidermy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,483 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Well I've been going "Backwaters" much more since they launched that. Currently €2.50 in Tesco!

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 5,804 Mod ✭✭✭✭irish_goat

Don't get that one up north but I'll keep an eye out next time I'm down.

Off topic but if anyone is close to Rascals in Inchicore on Sunday, I bought 2 tickets for a showing of Intermission that I wont make, happy to give them to a good home

This good weather has me reminiscing about nights out in Galway in pre-Pandemic summers, especially in the Salt House. Now I'm craving a bottle of original recipe Of Foam & Fury. The new little cans just aren't the same!

Are there any good DIPAs or similar out there that would have similar flavour profiles?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,706 ✭✭✭squonk

Yeah I’m a bit P’d off with GBB’s strategies these days. They seem to be wanting to push punters towards buying 330ml cans of everything. OFAF I kind of get because it’s kind of a heavy hitter but the Bay Ale and Full Sail shoukd st least be in 440ml cans. Chopping around the range isn’t great either. I was in Salt House yesterday and was told Buried At Sea is discontinued. Time was they had two stouts on the go. I forget the other one as I was a BAS fan. Ostara isn’t that great imho and it’s hard to get a right impression as well with those pi$$y little 330ml cans. Seems like they’re in it fur tge cash grab now or she’s disappearing up their own jaxies!

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Insect Overlord

Stormy Port was the other stout/porter. That disappeared for ages, came back as a 440ml special, and then hung around for a while again. They were very different drinks though, and both well worth having.

I'm having Western Herd's Spanish Point American pale ale and a Trouble Brewing Fresh Prince of Kildare tonight anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,706 ✭✭✭squonk

Thanks! Yes, Stormy Port. That was it. Definitely a good core I’d have thought. I had a pint of Flaggy Shore, their oyster stout yesterday and I wasn’t left feeling too enthusiastic. Mind you I had a Lindemans Frambroise just prior so that would have altered my impression.

Im having a Western Herd Siege right now. It’s a great beer I think. I have the Spanish Point in the fridge so will try that next. Haven’t had it before. Western Herd seem to just be improving more abd more as time goes by. Personally speaking I found their earlier stuff very hoppy and it seemed to give me attrocious hangovers so I gave them a bit of a berth for a while but I’ve recently tried their stuff again and really like it. I’m delighted for them as well. I’m from Clare so it’s great being able to support the locals and county colours don’t come into it now. I’d be drinking their stuff anyway.
