Big fan of Seb. Couldn't quite do it at Ferrari, but was a top driver before that. Seems an all round decent lad.

Yeah me too. Hasn't been on good form for a few years now. Always seems like a decent guy.

Didn't like Seb all that much in his early RB days but he really become a huge fan favourite in recent years. He'll be missed.

I thought he was an arse when driving with Webber (multi 21 etc.) But warmed to him big time in his Ferrari days.

Hungary 2017 was a stand out day for me... First GP I attended and Ferrari 1-2.. pity he didn't clench the title that year

You don't think these things are an issue??

Yeah, what a bastard. How dare he voice an opinion.

Will miss Seb on the grid, have always had time for him.

If I was sky I’d definitely be looking to have him on race weekends, possibly as a replacement for Rosberg and his box room. He’s a man who wouldn’t care at all about the politics of giving his opinion on anything.

If I were Channel 4 I would be trying to get Seb before them Sky arse-holes do.

I never liked Seb or his Dominince during his Red Bull years but I warmed to him when he moved to Ferrari and its such a pity he did not win the WDC in 2017 or 18 with them.

I wish him well for his future. He is certainly a lot more likeable these days and a great ambassador for the sport.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Very sad news about Vettel. He’s had a few fantastic drives in a terrible Aston that have showed he’s still got it - I dare say Ferrari would be in a much stronger position in the championship right now if he was still there.

People forget how great Vettel was - he managed to dominate during an era when the cars were more competitive than at any other point in the sport’s history and multiple different teams had hardware capable of winning any given race. He never had a car that was fast enough for his teammate to come second, yet he scored 4 world championships.

He and Alonso were head and shoulders above the rest of their generation, but both fell victim to the hybrid Formula putting huge gaps between the teams and taking driver skill out of the equation, and also to Ferrari’s habit of hiring the fastest guy on the grid, providing them with a poor car and unrealistic expectations, then blaming the driver for it when they don’t quite manage to drive the wheels off the thing to beat much faster cars like Schumacher could.

I’m still quite shocked as Vettel is relatively young and had a lot more to give. Definitely feels like the end of one era and the start of another with the next generation like Verstappen and Leclerc looking set to dominate for the next few years now.

He’s a true student of the sport, with knowledge and interest in the history that goes way beyond most drivers. I wonder if we’ll see him take up a team or FIA role or if he’ll just move on to maybe invest time in the causes he’s interested in.

As for Aston Martin, they’ve already got the slowest car on the grid currently and this strikes me as a major vote of no confidence from Vettel. We’ve already seen the likes of Szafnauer leave and lots of negative stories have circulated about Stroll’s running of the team earlier in the season so I’m not sure it’s a very desirable seat for next year, albeit a well funded one.

    Danny Ric to Aston now?

The people who think Seb is finished are comparing him to a young World Champion Seb. Still has plenty to give. Anyway it's all done and dusted now I suppose. I hope he goes into the administration side of things as opposed to media, he'd be a great FIA chief.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,908 ✭✭✭Joeface

Danny Ric to as Aston , is the most probable , but I think that is a mistake .

Ricciardo has struggled to drive different cars , He was ok at Renault as it was the same power unit he had been used to at Redbull but since he moved to Mclaren and the Mercedes engine and different car characteristics he has struggled .

What they are trying to do at Aston ( make a front row team not just a surviving Mid field team ) needs someone young and fast , There are development benefits someone with experience but I currently think Ricciardo isn't showing that he can be part of a car development . Maybe some with no experience is better . You can force them to drive the car a certain way .

Lance Stroll for all his flaws is actual an OK number 2 to have . Even this season only him an Hamilton have be credited for all the races this season So he can bring a car home . He has 4 points finishes this season in a Shite car and since he will probably be there may aswell bring in someone younger and potentially Faster

Hulkenburg return is also a possibility , already in the team , already driven the car

I mean who else would move there from the current grid . It really only suits someone young and new or old on the way back ....Vandoorne Mercedes Driver

I could see Aston Martin getting a driver from another team on a "loan" deal. Either Danny Ric loaned from McLaren or Nick De Vries loaned from Mercedes-Benz.

A few outsiders to consider might be Stoffel Vandoorne, Romain Grosjean or Nico Hulkenberg.

Or maybe Stroll senior will turn AM into Team Canada and bring in Latifi 🍁😁

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,596 ✭✭✭McFly85

I could see AM going for Ricciardo, but would he really be of any great benefit there?

He’s struggled for 2 years at McLaren to the point where it’s not surprising to see him finish 8th or 18th on any given raceday. AM need someone with the ability to get the best out of their car consistently.

As much as I like him I think his best days are behind him. He recently told sky - ‘put me in a winning car and I’ll win’, which is a statement of desperation or delusion, considering he’s consistently significantly outperformed by his teammate each race.

Fair play to Vettel, he was given a great car and took it to the top four times. I really liked him when he was first winning, as I do any new winners in the sport. It just got a bit tiring year in year out, things would always go his way, and he would always be in P1 and scarper off into the distance. Saying that, when you look at the points, it was a lot closer than that. Alonso got very close to winning twice.

Multi 21 and "the finger" put a lot of people off him, and we've more or less had a run of two drivers winning the titles since 2010 (Rosberg not withstanding). In 2014 I wanted anyone but him to win. Saying that, any time I saw him on TV away from F1 he came across as really sound and funny. Similar to his recent TV appearance talking about climate, he can really hold his own and he's very honest. His charm allows him to say things that might otherwise be difficult to hear.

The new era with Max and Charles and Carlos is great; it's mad to think Vettel is an elder statesman as to me he's still a "new" driver. But I guess he just ran out of energy, his mind was more focused on the issues close to his heart, unlike Alonso who seemingly still has the fire and energy (and performance).

If he was to remain in or come back to F1, he might act as some kind of green advisor or spokesman. I can't seem him being a pundit and flying to all the races, that would go against his agenda.

I think I echo most of the sentiments here, I really grew towards Seb in his later years in F1. When he was good, boy he was good! He has been showing flashes of that recently but not enough and I think this is a good move.

He has a very clever voice for other things outside of F1 and I hope he does well with this, his climate change work is important and I look forward to seeing what he does with it.

Great career and a bloody fast driver on a Saturday. I think F1 will miss a character like him around.

    Poor Mick will be distraught

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,358 ✭✭✭chicorytip

He should have retired when he left Ferrari as his mate, Raikkonnen, also should have done. Szafnauer and Stroll convinced him Aston Martin was destined for greatness and he could be world champion again. That worked according to plan. His dream of winning a title with Ferrari remains unfulfilled but he can't be blamed for that. He was the heartbeat of the team but the machinery was not good enough. It would have been great to see him in a Merc. Still, four world titles ain't bad. It may be enough to secure him the ranking of second GOAT.

What do you see out the window that is wildly different from any time in your living memory?

Everyone can have an opinion and I'm aware that Seb is doing abit re the sustainable fuel running the mansell red 5 car etc but he is still an F1 driver travelling the world pissing fuel up in the air for pleasure.

Nothing against that. I'd be an F1 driver if I could be but I wouldn't go around lecturing on climate change while doing it.

Hamilton another clown ferrying his dog alone in his private jet (until he got rid ) now lecturing on climate change. You couldn't make it up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,908 ✭✭✭Joeface

He should be speaking out for change even inside the sport . If people inside the sport say nothing and demand nothing then it will never change or push for a more sustainable version. They are supposed to be the pinnacle of Motorsport technology, going fast using less can be part of that.

Calling out Hamilton for a private jet is correct, it's also correct to say he saw the error and changed direction some what.

To be fair, he's acknowledged quite publicly that he's a hypocrite but he has a platform and fair play to him for using it for good, rather than trying to shill nft's or some nonsense like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,609 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

In the minority who always liked Vettel, even in his Red Bull days! He'll be missed, but it was equally sad to see him drive around in 11th or 12th. Would be a great addition to the Sky team.

I didn't like Red Bull Seb, but really warmed to him when he moved to Ferrari and matured a bit. It's a huge shame that he didn't get a 5th World Championship in a Ferrari. Will miss him a lot on the grid.

Besf of luck to Vettel. I have to confess, I enjoyed watching him in the Red Bull winning those WDCs. He was and still is a top class driver. He always seemed like a decent guy too.

I'll miss him on the grid.

Honda have continued their supply for RB who rebrand them. Red bull themselves have nothing to do with the current engines and Honda have agreed to continue to "develop" the engines in the restrictive ways the engine freeze allows.

The 2026 rules are going to mean a whole new power unit and RB won't be developing any Honda engines as you stated. They had already started to put the groundwork in putting together RB Powertrains and now have Porsche as a 50% partner in that project. Win win for RB
