56% of all tenants in arrears, at an average rent of 55 euro per week. Housing crisis? People crisis. Given todays social welfare payments (children, single allowance, sick etc), there's very few excuses why anyone should be in arrears at an average rent of 55 euro per week.

We pay through our noses in tax to support those who can't buy or rent themselves and they're failing to meet the fractional sized payments required. The rest of us drown in mortgage and the cost of living increases.

Legal action is being taken against 22 individuals who owe 20k+ and threatened to others but sure what good is it? If you take the house off them, you'll need to put them up in a hotel whilst you find somewhere else?

The government are being taken advantage of (and in turn, the tax payer) as it's too soft regarding social housing, means testing and social welfare payments. People aren't paying up because they know they can get away with it.

This is one of the reason private landlords have been used for housing social welfare recipients. The rent arrears to private landlords doesn't cost them anything and private citizens have to deal with it and absorb the costs. The councils also don't have to maintain the properties to the same standard as private rentals.

Direct payment from social welfare payments and/or deductions from wages like tax.

What is your solution to paying for social housing costs? Make everyone else pay.

There isn't hence why SDCC is bringing these people to court for non payment and I'm sure many will resume payments upon receipt of legal letter. If the people involved were scumbag property developers they could probably apply for a multi million euro debt right off.

Yes. Set up poor houses. Industrial warehouse sized buildings with enclosed bedrooms/kitchen/toilet and put 100-200 non payers and their families into each of them.

Why not from the trademen who push up the prices of building. Is 52% tax not high enough for landlords? How about REITs pay tax instead.

I think the proposal to move minimum wage to a working wage for all over 21 will give some incentive. At the same time, the exceptionally generous jobseeker's allowance should not be increased.

On council rents, it should be deducted at source. That can be done now and it should be done automatically for all.

Aren't something like 85% of landlord owned properties owned by 'small time' landlords though? (ie 1-2 properties?)

So 'the scandalous profits being made by private landlords' as referred to by Fattybojanges would primarily be aimed at landlords who are actually paying a massive percentage of their rental income in tax, which would be going to social causes (ie, the very thing he wants the money to go to)

For sure, it’s not too late yet. Start deducting from their payments asap.

Do a current means test, have they medical cards etc that they are more financially off that they shouldnt.

What car and assets have they, something is wrong if they have a 221 car outside the door.

The whole system needs to be addressed.

€55 a week is 30% of the social welfare payment for a single person. The rents are too high and the social welfare payments are too low. Rent should only be 25% of income at most.

How many of the rentals do you think only have one resident living there and no other income? Means assessment set the rent at 10-15% of the household income if I recall. So your little calculation doesn't take into account the actual facts. The €55 is also the average so not 30% of their income if a single resident with one social welfare payment.

What has happened to the education system where people don't understand basic information like averages and percentages along with critical thinking.

Or the massive amounts of money the private sector leeched from the public purse during covid and still to this day EWSS etc and the scandalously low 9% VAT that hospitality business are paying. These are real issues not the drop in the ocean social housing arrears. The real issue with social housing is that it is not being built en masse by the state so that it can be available to as many as possible.

I think the numbers are a bit off. The vast majority of landlords are small time but the REITs have already bought up a good lot of the market.

Hospitality really need a leg up at the moment, would you rather they just fold?

The real issue seems to be that you've a bee in your bonnet for any private enterprise and actually want to live in some form of communist state.

What we are seeing in hospitality and Dublin Airport is the effect of poor wages and poor working conditions long hours and crap pay = staff shortages.
