The answer is that vaccines (unlike a virus) leave the body relatively quickly with the only trace remaining being the antibody/t-cell/b-cell memory caused by the introduced vaccine proteins. The vaccines were primarily tested for safety and for efficacy against severe disease, effects against mild disease were measured but were not the primary outcome. Effects against severe disease have held up well in the long term with the effects against mild disease and transmission waning as antibody count drops (this same thing happens with viral infection just with greater disease risks). Long term immunity is also primarily driven by b and t-cells hence the confidence over long term efficacy.

While there is ongoing safety monitoring (as happens for all medicines) as there is no vaccine components left in the body, it is not seen as a safety threat in the longer term, previous vaccines have all shown side effects within days or weeks of administration, however, there was still months of data gathered during the trials and there is over 18 months worth of data available now with no long term effects noted (and as had been chatted about here, COVID does have measurable long term effects).

And just a note on "big pharma", your AZ vaccine was developed by the non-profit Jenner institute in Oxford, BioNTech and Moderna were both startups. All 3 partnered with existing pharmaceutical companies for manufacturing with Jenner making the formula available to be produced by other institutes (e.g. serum institute of India). China has developed it's own vaccine, as has Cuba, Russia and India. There are vaccines becoming available from Novavax (well known in the vaccine industry) and Valneva are working on delivering a vaccine soon as well. There are ongoing developments of multiple vaccines, some targeting multiple proteins, others looking at nasal delivery.

That's fair enough, it's hassle though. You are restricted though, no matter what way you spin it.

Are there many places near you that don't check?

Ireland should not be settling for 2019 norms either. Licensing laws here need to be changed anyway.

If you live in a small town, you can do most things without being checked, but if you want to go for dinner anywhere decent then you haven't a hope without a cert really. Now they very very rarely ask for ID so you could just borrow someone's else one.

I haven't tried everywhere because I've no need to. I'm good in my local.

With MUP being implemented I'd imagine that opening hours are only going to go one way. They won't be increased. Sunday will stay at 11 and weekdays might even be reduced from 11:30 down. Wait and see.

I agree with you that things are not normal yet, but honestly, I think expecting 2019 standards to come back is setting yourself up for disappointment. I mean, has there ever been a world changing or impacting event where, when its over, things have reverted to what they were prior to it ? I can't think of one. Societies move on and adapt. We may end up with 90% of what we were used to, we may end up with 99%, who knows, but I think its inevitable there will be legacy items, how ever big or small they may turn out to be. Like, we're still taking our shoes off in airport security, and going through full body scanners in some, 20+ years on from 9/11.

Yes when it's media 24/7 pumping out non stop fear porn that causes people to do this...

I travelled to the UK a few months back and honestly it was like 2019 in Ireland, it was like covid didn't exist. I don't see why we cant get to that level as well.

What exactly is your point? Your local doesn’t check your pass so the pass can’t be a big imposition on anyone else either?

I’ve been in Ohio for the past month. Aside people voluntarily wearing masks indoors (which has a surprisingly high compliance rate), things are basically 100% normal. They have nowhere near our vaccine uptake - only 65% of adults are vaccinated. There is no health care system collapse. Ireland is doing something very wrong.

Because the British mentality is very different to the Irish, at all points they have actively pushed to end all this and live with covid. The Irish, not so much.

You can sum the differing mentality up in 4 words each: "If not now, when?" versus, "an abundance of caution".

Both speak to the culture and mentality of the people behind it. So they went back to normal at the earliest opportunity, while Ireland embraced the misery and accordingly are very unlikely to let it go easily.

That poster has multiple times stated that there are no restrictions if you just don't do the restricted things. So he happily shoots across the border to do everything he wants and then pretends to wonder why other people are bothered about restrictions.

when did we change, there are whole comedy routines built around our lessez faire attitude to rules and regulations?

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

We can't because we don't want to. We want to 'feel safe'.

This is a nation of people, who tune in to watch misery porn under the guise of entertainment. The Covid crisis is like one big Late Late show episode that never ends. For some odd reasons the powers that be in Ireland have always had great relationship with misery, and they aren't going to just drop it over pesky nonsense like "liberties".

“The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Of bigger concern then is, the definition of fully vaccinated.

I took both shots and had issues with my head after which, thankfully looks to have passed now after more than 2 months. There's no way I'm taking a third.

Will I be included in that?. For those who take the third and don't want a fourth, will they be included later in the year?.

Where's the line?.. the goal posts keep moving.

I can see this reaching points where people need to take to the streets in serious protests to say enough is enough as too much is being taken by the EU/Governments for what's a weakening virus.

It's coercion plain and simple. There's a reason evidence of coercion is sufficient to void a contract or a confession. It removes an individual's ability to choose freely. It restricts. Those who claim that people are being given a choice with regard to vaccinations are either disingenuous, bare faced liars or morons who have no idea about the slippery slope towards illiberalism we find ourselves on.

I've asked you repeatedly to prove that I said what you are stating I said. You have failed to do so. Multiple times. You are posting in bad faith. I don't pretend to wonder why people are bothered by restrictions. You are, yet again, putting words in my mouth. Stop it. Fishing for 'thanks' is not a good look.

I'll repeat the question I put to you previously, what are you doing to stop your liberties being stripped away one by one?

Same here, I was ill for months after the 2nd and there is nothing that will make me take another. Absolutely nothing.

I suspect we aren’t alone, I haven’t seen much reporting on the booster numbers. The first vaccinations were followed closely, percentages given in the news. Are there similar stats for the boosters?
