Hospitalisations are dropping dramatically now - down 40% in the last few weeks and yet we're ramping up the restrictions.

Imagine where we would be without masks.....

If they didn't drop all restrictions during the Summer, what makes you think they're going to drop them come the Spring?

As for your question, the vaxx passport will be kept going unless there's huge nationwide resistance/non-compliance. Without saying too much (I respect the mods gotta mod), the vaxx passport will bridge into the new system and digital euro (as aforementioned by Christine Lagard, President of the European Central Bank.)

To prove my point, let's make a small bet of, say.. 1k? Vaccine passports, "green pass" etc gone by Summer next year and the money is yours. When they're not, I'll take your 1k and give it to charity. We can do it over blockchain for transparency. Deal?

Its a valid form of protest.

    1. They told us we`d be out of this if we had high vaccination levels.
    2. They said they wouldnt close anything they had reopened.
    3. They want to have 1.5 million boosters administered before Xmas.

Yet with the stroke of a pen Nphet can put in more restrictions.

So why bother with getting boosters if we as a population are getting **** all benefit from it.

I may as well be sitting at home non boosted until covid runs it course.

BTW -Im fully vaccinated so I dont disagree with vaccines.

They didn't drop them in Summer because they were still vaccinating, they should have opened in August but they didn't because they didn't want to have to rollback restrictions. The current changes are happening because of the rapid growth of omicron and the assumption that it is as severe but has a higher transmission rate, if it's less severe, then hospitalisations should keep on dropping and restrictions dropped along with them.

I don't believe they're necessary as I'm hopeful that Omicron is a lot less severe.

But that's the data being worked off.

I'd do 50 for a bet, whichever charity, can post the donation, passes gone internally by July 31st (they'll still be needed for international travel). I'm betting against there being any new significant variants between now and then of course :)

It's one of the most transparent stunts these chancers have played yet.

    • Leak the news of a nonsensical 5pm close
    • Let the people get annoyed
    • announce later that you have listened to advice and will agree to keep pubs and the entertainment industry open until 10pm
    • caveat is that you need your vaccine cert updated with a booster...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,124 ✭✭✭timmyntc

50 for a charity of your choice if vaccine passports/restrictions on unvaccinated are gone internally in Ireland by July 31st 2022

  • Registered Users Posts: 627 ✭✭✭DLink

We need to hit their statistics, it's the only message we can send seeing as we won't take to the streets.

I'm fully vaxxed, but I'm not going to take the booster, not now anyway. I only got vaxxed for travel, but given that the rules around travel are changing to vaxxed AND test, or just test, why bother with the vaccine when we're getting back to requiring a test no matter what your vaccination status is?

A few weeks back a friend was laughing his hole off at the non-vaccinated not being allowed into pubs, was delighted to have the pass and said "fúck them all".... Very temped to text him and ask him how the pass is working out for him now.....

The way I see it panning out, the carrot for younger people to get vaccinated was to get into pubs/restaurants. If pubs are closed during January and February, what will be the carrot for U30s to get the booster? Maybe keeping them closed and saying get the booster and we'll reopen the pubs will be that carrot.

I will be shocked if this does not happen. MM & LV will think they have somehow saved xmas for people

  • Registered Users Posts: 930 ✭✭✭robfowler78

It’s the lack of media or opposition calling them out also

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,404 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

This mealy mouthed shite would make you angrier, he doesnt give 2 **** about the hospitality sector

  • Denmark is one place they would be modelling on. Most recent case numbers are over 8000 in a day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,906 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

Honestly, the booster is probably coming too soon for the under 50's, though we'll see what 2nd dose vs. 3rd dose data looks like for Omicron, if there is a revised vaccine for March/April for Omicron (and it hasn't burned out anyway), I don't see uptake being that high in younger age groups, we've been "off-cycle" with a lot of these, a booster program in September/October along with Flu would probably be most effective, trying to get another jab done in Spring/Summer makes it very messy and antibodies will be waning just as you want them plentiful.

  • The leaking, of course, is to test public reaction. See if and what they can get away with imposing without civil unrest.

3.5k cases roughly with 28 admitted to hospital whats it like at the minute here?

  • Registered Users Posts: 725 ✭✭✭M_Murphy57

Multiple reports that these restrictions are needed so "schools can open". Yet again these pricks are threatening us that, essentially, if we insist on drinking alcohol they will remove our childrens education!

Fuck every single last one of these pricks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,934 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

And the reason they're saying that is because it's the one thing Micheal Martin committed to when he took office (reopen the schools and keep them open).

He's fixated on it as it's about the only thing he's achieved - aside from his primary and overriding goal of becoming Taoiseach that is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,892 ✭✭✭the kelt

You have to ask the question

Whats the only scenario where NPHET will be happy or even content?

Its basically looking now like its zero COVID is their policy but thats not possible for our island so restriction forever really until COVID disappears.

That literally looks like the plan cos theres no semblance of any other plan

It's complete insanity that we've reached an extent of shutting down hospitality, sport and travel in order to maintain children's ability to make a few christmas cards and watch Home Alone in those pointless end of term days where the teacher is just running down the clock most of the time.

The lack of desire among parents for kids to attend those days is so great that most principals reckon less than half will even attend next week. Yet Micheál still insists on opening them, it's crazy.

Classic good cop, bad cop play by the govt...

Bad cop - NPHET (close at 5pm)

Good cop - Govt (close at 9/10pm)

    Its fcuking pathetic....

We will have the state mouthpiece RTE and scare byrne getting onto publicans etc about how relieved they must be now that the govt has saved them...

Resistance is futile. Our Christmas is not happening now, was to be three households (incl us) and two gangs positive today. Isolate for 10 days.

Anyone want to buy a monster turkey lol.

As long as they are alright and don't get too sick, that's all that matters. All double jabbed but not boosted yet in the sick contingent.

Yeah reading anecdotal stories from London and seems hard not to end up with it if you're anywhere near it.

Seems like MM is getting pushback from his own party on it. I do find it amazing how there hasn't been a leadership challenge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,696 ✭✭✭Red Silurian

London cases are kicking off, 23k cases yesterday, over 50% of them are omicron, 9k was the average last week for comparison, hospitalisations increasing slightly also

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,837 ✭✭✭✭freshpopcorn

I don't really know because I don't believe a lot of the FF TD's would be one's for buying into these restrictions.

However they might be hoping to keep their seat next time around by telling the pensioner's they kept them safe because its the only way I can see people voting for them.

Just in case anybody is wondering about timelines today, the party leaders are meeting NPHET at midday (ongoing as I speak) and the covid sub-comittee is meeting at 1:30. Presumably there will be an address to the nation at about 6pm by our fearless leader

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,467 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

But seriously, what else would you expect from career medics like these?

If the government were to go on the advice of medics for everything, then you could imagine the type of policy government would have suggested for them... No cars, no alcohol, no cigarettes, no activity with a degree of risk.. mountain biking, paragliding, sky jumping etc etc any physical contact in sport would be heavily questioned etc etc

The issue here is that government has got itself into a knot whereby these medics are the sole source of advice. There's no balance whatsoever.

That's before you get into the personality stuff. Tony Holohan has his own axes to grind and he's grinding them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,467 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Too late. They are all squirming now worried about their seats. They should have been pushing back last Spring when summer was being taken away again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Martins slow opening policy from the summer is coming back to bite him now. He should have opened up during the summer once all the over 60's and other vulnerable people were vaccinated. The failure to do that has led to this position. Time now for Martin to stand up and say no more restrictions.

I don't Iike your phraseology😁 but why are they messing with hospitality so much ?

Lisa Chambers, Barry Cowan, Dilly O Wee and Regina Doherty all publicly opposed to these changes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,003 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

The opposition have not opposed any measures either. SF can be high in the polls, and good luck to them but they are playing along with every restriction too, unless they have a different Covid restriction policy that I am unaware of. Same goes for Labour and Independents, PBP, Soc Dems etc.

So there is no point getting angry, as I have already said resistance is futile.

It's high time in this country that a Taoiseach publicly addressed the nation and put the gauntlet down to the HSE. You've 2 years to get the healthcare system sorted or we're privatising the whole lot. Time the head honchos had the gauntlet thrown down to them. Look at what we spend on health (6th highest in the OECD per capita) and look at the shít we get for our money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,696 ✭✭✭Red Silurian

Hopefully this is the straw that breaks the camels back then

A SF led government would have implemented more widespread antigen testing and probably would have improved the quality of our hospitals so they probably wouldn't have needed these latest restrictions as we would be in a better place COVID-wise now

Be careful of the tricks NPHET are up to. Remember the summer? They said close indoor dining unless the Government introduce the vaccine pass.

Some people and TD’s calling for ‘boosted only’ allowed to socialise…so another little section of society - the doubly vaccinated shut out despite stepping forward for two shots…and possibly their age groups not being called yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kirk.

This booster nonsense is beyond a joke now

Young people getting vaccinated again 3 months after the last for something they probably don't even notice

''In his opening speech the Health Minister, Simon Harris TD, inspired the delegates to do the right thing and join Ireland in their important journey toward stronger alcohol policies. He described the extent of alcohol industry lobbying and media pressure to oppose the Public Health (Alcohol) Act and the important role played by civil society in ensuring its passage: “When the public health lobby get together, we can achieve great things,” Harris said.''

This is why they are messing with hospitality.. I sound like a CT nut now.. but clearly there is an agenda against pubs and licensed premises..

PS they was held in March 2020, 340 attended from 47 countries. What the actual FK.. and 1st of March they shut a school down for 14 days.. so covid was very much here

“When the public health lobby get together, we can achieve great things,” Harris said.'' this line here sounds so ominous! - actually kind of scary considering the amount of power they have now..

Yes, they need another divide and conquer strategy now. The unvaccinated are yesterday's pin a tail on the donkey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 433 ✭✭redlad12

I agree with all your post except I feel like throughout the pandemic Sinn Fein have always leaned on actually tightening restrictions. The politicians will base all these decisions on opinion polls and flip flop as much as they have to in order to stay in or gain power.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭Luxembourgo

Harris is a Soc Dem is FG clothes, zero time for him. No interest in hard decisions or responsibility

October 2020 the 3-day and 7-day averages had all peaked and begun a sharp decline days before level 5 was unneccessarily introduced. At least half of the total decrease in cases between then and December was down to the pre-level 5 measures.

But they needlessly put everyone in lockdown for 6 weeks, then boasted about how we were the best in Europe as they opened everything up at the busiest time of the year, with zero effective restrictions on inbound travel, not even a test requirement. Genius.

I know I'm invoking Godwin's Law, but honestly, I used to think "How the hell did the German's all go along with Hitler back in the day?".

    I'm starting to understand.

I'm not comparing anyone to nazis or anything of the sort. I'm just observing how ridiculous and nonsensical restrictions are embraced and obeyed by a population and how dissenting voices are punished or shunned.

If, in 2019, you suggested to anyone we would be in the situation we are in, you would say that Charlie Brooker had released a new Black Mirror.

Am I the only one that remembers the videos of chinese people dropping dead in the street? That terrified me. I don't think that was true.

Dying WITH Covid is not the same as dying OF covid. I don't trust the figures. Any rational person couldn't.

Vaccines will be our way out. Wear a mask. Dont wear a mask. Schools are safe. Schools are safe if they wear a mask. Kids shouldnt wear a mask. Schools need to have their windows open. But not too open. Kids are safe. Vaccinate the kids. Open the pubs once you have a cert to get in. Certs are only for international travel. Eat a €9 meal and you can have a pint. Close the nightclubs. Open the nighclubs but only until 12. Pubs can open until 9. Wear your mask. Pubs close at 5. Work from home.

I'm disillusioned now. I was obedient. I did what was asked. I trusted that we were being told the truth. We were all in it together.

    Fuck them now.
