And isn't that a sad state of affairs. Let's be honest here, this is primarily a disease of the old and unhealthy. Why are the vast majority suffering for a small, albeit vocal, minority. Society has "held firm", "has been in this together", etc. for long enough now, it's time to move on. But the issue at this stage isn't that people are frightened of contracting Covid, but frightened of being called-out, named-and-shamed, scapegoated, and vilified by online finger waggers. Irish society has always been a refuge for begrudgery and curtin twitchers, but I feel their voices have been amplified throughout all of this. A bigger soapbox to shout from.

And it's unfortunate that the whole saga has been politicised. We now have a sector of society scared to move forward for fear of being politically incorrect, so they want to be seen to be doing the "right thing". Hence, we get these cancellations when there is no need whatsoever for them. I said it months ago, and I still believe that this pandemic will only end in Ireland when people accept that cases, hospitalisations, deaths from Covid are here to stay and will be part of life moving forward.

Unfortunately some of the old and vulnerable ( my mother prime example) thinks that everyone of us should hide away and keep things shut down because we could all end up “dying”. Gets exhausting listening to these people.

My office Christmas party was cancelled, there's one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,243 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Yeah a hotel locally cancelled the sharing dinner dance parties they normally host, citing 'The hotel has decided (4/11/21) not to proceed with shared party nights in 2021 in the interest of public health and safety'

You'd have to be nieve not to think NPHET/Dr Tony's influence in these decisions. Same with Pantos getting cancelled

They have really fecked up this country

I do think people were afraid of Covid in March 2020 however now most people aren't really now.

They don't want Covid but if they get it they know it's not the end of the world providing there not very old or have some type of underlying condition and even most of those people seem to be getting on with things now.

In my experience I think those who are terrified of Covid now general are people who do have an underlying condition and alot of those are with it now or thesis with some anxiety disorder and to be honest I don't think a lot of these people wont get back to normal for a long time. The sight of people standing near one another nearly gives them convulsions nearly.

They can say their fine with the pubs/clubs being open but in reality they'll find fault with something and they simply don't like people mixing until this is gone away and I can't see it happening soon.

If your somebody who goes to the supermarket once a week and your back to normal then that fine however don't tell people who go out a lot out having to book tickets, and then them being accused as being granny killers that things are back to normal.

Ya, it's probably fine if you're a small team/company and its 10 or so going out. I can't imagine many places are having Christmas parties that would have had several hundred attendees.

A 40th I was to go to in December has been cancelled too, people had contacted them saying they were nervous of a big crowd. It’s a pity. But the person organizing it didn’t want to be blamed for ruining peoples Christmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,243 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

No doubt NPHET with the help of the media will be out in force with the 'be sensible this Christmas season and don't socialise and all that bollocks' etc

If they could close hospitality they would. This meeting between MM and hospitality representatives is adding fuel to the fire and they will all be on a warning no doubt

Keep a social bubble is what I'd imagine they might come out with. So going out to a restaurant with family, grand. Doing that and having 5 different pub crawls on different nights is a no.

And those people that are inclined to be listeners of Joe Duffy will pat themselves on the back, feeling all self righteous because they did what the cmo said, tut tutting at the pariah of the week. Meanwhile the rest of the country gets on with living with covid.

So you think that because NPHET etc recommended the loosening of restrictions back on the 22nd of October the hotel decided not to host the parties? That's strange logic

Stuff getting cancelled just shows how conservative Ireland is. Is liberal/fun Ireland now dead?

Saw a local pub going on the mortal Highground when the talk of restrictions not been lifted last month. They stated 'no matter what happens on the 22nd Oct we will be staying the same as of now with booking and limited numbers etc'

Sad state of affairs from my perspective, things been cancelled just incase etc

Part of me hopes my Christmas Parties will be cancelled. Although I'd be happy to go to them, I have to live with, and care for, two 74 and 75 year old parents. Thanks to RTE they are still absolutely hysterical about COVID and people "not doing the right thing" and "people not following the rules", as if everyone followed the rules there would be 0 cases.

If the Christmas Party was cancelled it would at least mean I don't have to make a decision about whether to go or not to keep them protected.

I have to say. It’s sad that it’s come to the above scenario. Are they fully vaccinated along with their booster coming soon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,367 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

So will you avoid pubs altogether or just the Xmas Party ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,728 ✭✭✭✭freshpopcorn

People do really pander to a few loud mouths just to keep them quiet!

so you hope the parties are cancelled instead of making a grown up decision based on your own risk? Country is nuts

It's like the madness this week that teenagers can't play an indoor sport match yet can go to a disco. I can totally see why companies etc don't want bad PR from people blaming their party for causing a case, such is the blame game now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,243 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Imagine our leaders are one of those finger pointing and treating the people of this country like bold children

Dr Nolan with his 'snake oil comment' which was a little OTT but nothing ever came of it and we just have to sweep it under the carpet

Xmas Parties are the flavour of the month now. Even though pubs are packed but Xmas parties are the devil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,636 ✭✭✭JeffKenna

Few things I know have been cancelled but while Covid was a factor its also a handy excuse as well...aka work Christmas party.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,494 ✭✭✭✭wrangler

Most people know that venues aren't checking the Covid passes properly so they don't want to go to crowded venues.

While the anti vaxxers claim that vaccination doesn't make any difference to transmission, people aren't taking the chance.

We'll be going to the usual house parties anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,205 ✭✭✭Marty Bird

So they don’t trust the vaccine to give them the protection then ?

Seems like they are the actual anti vaxxers who don't believe they work lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,681 ✭✭✭Penfailed

The vaccine has limits. People can still get (and transmit) Covid when vaccinated. It reduces symptoms and lowers the chances of hospitalisation. It's not 100% effective. Do people still not understand that?

Nah, but because of the hysteria I will have to make a decision like that. That is the nuts thing. I don't want to have to make that decision, I just want to go to the night out. But I may have to make a call not to, not so much to keep them safe, but to make two vulnerable old people believe they are being kept safe when they are at the age where reasoning logically begins to fade.

They're getting boosters in 10 days, and I'll hopefully have mine in a few weeks. Not quite sure that will change any opinions though. I'm due to go to a gig in the UK after Christmas, and I doubt I'll be able to TBH. I have had the "well if you bring it home you might kill us" talk many times. Its ridiculous, but thats what the likes of RTE and the like have done in this pandemic. The country is nuts, but maybe not for the reasons you've mentioned!
