    Charming.

To add to your original post, the musings of a few nutters on twitter is not representative of the entire population. We could be in level 5 or entirely open and the same people would find something to complain about on twitter - its what they do.

As many twitter idiots as there are out there, I very much doubt the public will back martial law or anything close to it.

Bricks to the head on the otherhand...

We wont need martial law it will be Joe Duffy law. Outrage and hatred against young people and unvaxed will be turned up to ten in a couple of weeks unfortunately and the mob will win out.

    Good points.

We could be hit by an asteroid and an asteroid could pass us by. We should all live a subterranean life in case an asteroid hits earth.

She endorsed the Barrington Agreement. Here's a snippet on herd immunity. Even we armchair internet experts can see the problems with all of this.

Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold. Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity.

Well clearly the government were among the chief deniers, as they have been all the way through.

Any competent leaders would have contingency plans in place for a range of scenarios. In fact, was that not supposed to be the point of having 5 levels in the first place? What level are we at now - magurndy?

Yet instead they act as if totally taken by surprise by NPHETs diktat to not remove all restrictions.

It's like January when overnight they suddenly realised travel was an issue and started vilifying people who had booked holidays in good faith. Didn't bother to do anything proactive like compensate people. Instead they announced mandatory hotel quarantine, and then spent two months investigating the legalities of it as if the concept had only been invented on the spot.

So it was April or so before they actually had something concrete in place. In the meantime they just relied on the blame game and manipulating media opinion to shame people into not travelling.

It's quite clear why these people are career politicians - they'd bankrupt a real business in a year.

Ok, we'll change the quote so you can internalize the message:

"You comply because you want it to end, but it doesn't end because you comply".

Remember that next year when passes, boosters and other restrictions are still in place. You consented.

She was one of the three most associated with the Great Barrington declaration. Not only was it advocating chasing natural herd immunity, you might want to check out who was financing it, and whose HQ it was signed in. Quite a few dodgy outfits involved.

Nightclubs soon to open and they are still awaiting for government guidelines.

Honest to Christ, they've had two months sitting on their holes waiting for Oct 22nd.

    Stealing salaries at this stage.

Amateur armchair covid experts bought into the simple cause-and-effect logic of lockdown as soon as they first heard of it, which is why they don't look for scientific proof - they assume it works and exclude anything goes against their assumptions.

Having the confidence to accuse Oxford university disease specialists of being con artists ('grifters') is not impressive to me.

charlie14 or Jimbob577 are the first to appeal to the cult of micro-specialisms ('expertise') when it suits them but then casually claim to know more than lifelong specialists when a statement doesn't line up with assumptions they've assimilated from the media.

I wouldn't put it past this government to delay publishing nightclub guidelines and then claim this evening that they are nearly ready so nightclubs can't open this weekend but can from next week.

I am not accusing her of anything, merely pointing out a public stance she endorsed that was very clearly wrong. IIRC she was also pretty uncompromising in her opinions. There has been much outrage on all sides during this.

Nightclubs to be all ticket from next week

Yes it seems now that herd immunity is a myth many were chasing. But it was plausible in very early days. And the GBD sought to minimise the collateral damage we are seeing from increased mental health issues and huge waiting lists. The science has emerged to show herd immunity is likely not possible and scientists have moved on.

    This bit in the GBD softens the extract you chose;

‘Adopting measures to protect the vulnerable should be the central aim of public health responses to COVID-19. By way of example, nursing homes should use staff with acquired immunity and perform frequent testing of other staff and all visitors. Staff rotation should be minimized. Retired people living at home should have groceries and other essentials delivered to their home. When possible, they should meet family members outside rather than inside. A comprehensive and detailed list of measures, including approaches to multi-generational households, can be implemented, and is well within the scope and capability of public health professionals.’

I was referring to another poster calling her a 'grifter'. My reply to a series posts seemed to be directed at only you. My bad, apologies.

Well, the UK had a very quick stab at herd immunity and the Swedes were also at it despite evidence quite quickly that it really wasn't going to work. Whatever about the mental health aspect of it the rest of it was a non-runner and there was not one approach worldwide that addressed the effects as effectively as this claimed it could. TBH it was largely a group of people who took the hump over public health policies they disagreed with and given how little we yet know about the disease quite hubristic. It's just as well that the virus called its bluff!

How the hell are nightclubs supposed to develop these requirements overnight? I'm actually flabbergasted that this is the plan. Is anyone still defending this utter nonsense?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,283 ✭✭✭Allinall

Those regulations will be put in place next week, not overnight.

If you look back at some of the early outbreaks on cruise ships there was some very real world data that showed who was the most at risk of this virus.

We know for a fact its those above a certain age. Those below 50 were just not likely to be at much risk.

Given that our excess mortality is nearly identical to a bad flu year its showing up time and again that covid is deadly to the elderly and those who would sadly pass in any other flu season.

The absolute destruction of our lives for 2 years was far top cautious and have unintended consequences. We now have huge back logs and will ultimately put our health service under more risk.

Sweden did it right. They took the minimal steps needed.

Their deaths from covid vs ours, adjusted for population AND typical yearly deaths per 1000 (9.1 vs our 6.2) is exactly the same.

Lockdowns by all accounts didn't save lives.

The GBD still have it correct. Lockdowns are totally new to pandemic responses and came out of China.

Ah that's grand so. They'll develop a digital ticketing solution in a week no bother.
