Sweden are reporting 1/4 of our cases per 100k, with no mask mandates?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,717 ✭✭✭timmyntc

Thats funny, because the experts you so often defer to seem to think the opposite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,924 ✭✭✭✭bear1

How about Denmark? Although I believe they have a higher case count.

Which, to me, shows that it's perfectly manageable to give everyone their lives back and not be held back with restrictions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,573 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Sweden had 2174 cases yesterday, roughly double our cases on double our population so try that one again

Denmark removed their limited facemask requirement 5 days ago and also still have tough controls on their border so also not a great example

Sweden cases per 100k in the last 14day period:133.67

Ireland cases per 100k in last 14day period: 433.68

Knowledge has increased. Maybe one day it will be eradicated (but it could be a long way off), however in the mean time It would be the wrong move for governments to base their covid policies on Covid being eliminated. People need to live their lives.

I fairness to the poster I have seen nothing to even vaguely suggest he/she is anti-vax. Like quite a few, not being in any vulnerable category the poster came across as being a bit laissez-fare on the vaccines and ended up as sick as a small hospital because of it.

It`s debatable if getting a vaccination soon after recovering from infection gives much more protection. Authorities everywhere appear to have the same outlook as proof of having been recently infected carries the same weight as vaccination for Covid passports.

Neither do I see where the gaslighting claim has any substance. I have not seen the poster claim there are no restrictions. If anything in the not distant pass he/she has posted the belief that some restrictions were unnecessary or past their sell by date.

    Re: Capacity

Like a lot of things, it is not as straightforward as that. One of the bars that I work for has a reduction in seating capacity to 70% of normal (based on true seats). However, there is a lot more at play for them:

    • One guy sits at a table for 2 or 4 - that table is gone for capacity straightaway.
    • No single bar stools tightly packed along the bar. They do have some along a ledge but have to keep the 1m gap between them.
    • Pubs make a lot of their money at peak times. They used to be able to pack them in when matches were on, or Friday / Saturday's. Squeeze anyone in who was willing to come in. That's all gone. When the tables are gone, they are gone. No more in, no more full to the top making good money couple of hours.
    • Table service means that they actually have to have more staff on, as they are doing the walking up and down, get drinks, ring in the till, get change / card machine etc Plus cert checking and contact tracing.
    • The pubs are taking strict last orders just before 23:00 with everyone out on their heel and place shut down by 23:30. That's a good 90 minutes of the busiest trade on a Friday and Saturday night lost and then 30 / 45 minutes mid week. Everyday since they reopened.

It is not as straight forward as oh the place looks busy, nothing to worry about here. It's far more complex than that.

Not once...not one single time, have I told anyone that things aren't restricted (unless of course, they weren't actually restricted from doing something). I challenge you to prove otherwise.

I'm not anti-vax, I'm 'Can't be arsed/might get round to it sometime'. Call it what you want.

The English CMO, Chris Whitty, says unvaccinated people in their 30s face roughly the same Covid death risk as fully vaccinated people in their 70s...there ye are now.

So, are you living under a regime or not?

It sounds like you've been out protesting with the other dozen gemmaroids which would indicate you're not living under a regime (unless of course you're talking bluster about protesting, which is highly likely).

This is now becoming a measure of nothing terribly useful. For at least the last two months hospitalizations have been a much better barometer of where we are. Denmark are also higher than Sweden yet COVID is over there.

He's better informed and more qualified than you or I to make such a statement. Granted, it could be bullshít.

So you said lack of mask wearing in Arkansas was causing their higher cases than here in Ireland.. I point out that Sweden has had no mask mandates and yet have much lower cases per 100k than Ireland - all of a sudden cases are no longer a good metric? LOL

    Untitled Image

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,132 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

I'm pretty sure I never mentioned Arkansas at any stage. Our cases have peaked and we are now testing anyone who has heard a rumour they might have COVID along with almost every child in the country. These cases are really not converting to hospitals numbers so the vast majority are of no interest to the health system bar the restricted movements.

Does this image have some personal significance to you?

Tbh I would not see that much of a comparable metric.

Based on population Sweden presently has 43% more Covid deaths than Ireland, and that is with a much tougher criteria than Ireland uses. 2020 they had 9,175 excess deaths, an increase of 10.3% compared to the previous year, and have 55% more of their population infected. I know long Covid is dismissed by some here but Sweden`s department of labour are not dismissing it.They had some interesting data a while back on those that were still unable to return to work for as much as 6 month`s after being infected.

Different poster, see below reference to Alabama* blaming their case number totally on the lack of mandated mask wearing. Its not a valid statistical comparison at all, as I've shown with other examples.

For sure it's way too early to make any policy on eradication now. but I fully believe it will go the way of Spanish Flu, Russian Flu, SARS and MERS and will eventually be eradicated. Might take 10+ years but the expertise is out there... That's not a fact, that's simply an opinion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,717 ✭✭✭timmyntc

As I thought - totally unfounded.

Whats the source on those figures btw?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,924 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Not sure what Sweden has to do with anything but what strict border controls does Denmark have?

It will absolutely, I'd agree. But we have to get on with living life now, not in 10 years time.We have to sort the Health capacity issue now (yeah, I don't believe that will happen either), not in 10 years time.

1119 deaths in 2 weeks? Not Irish figures anyway
