Don't know if any Jets fans left after recent revamp. Anyway my early season optimism is back and I am just back from my yearly holiday to Brazil where I got game pass again. First preseason game tonight. Looking forward to seeing Wilson.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

Good to see Wilson didnt look out of place, but it is only the first pre season game and I dont think the Giants had many of their starters playing, so I wont get carried away yet.

Does Mims start to move back up the WR depth chart after his performance? Reports from training camp have been saying hes doing most of his work with the backups

  • Registered Users Posts: 528 ✭✭✭corner back 2

Good start for Wilson and probably a good way to ease him in with most of the Giants starters on the bench. Also it was good to see lots of reps for the rookies as it looks like we will have a fair few starting or making major contributions early in the season. I am not worried about the Mims thing as I feel he is the player who is being used to signal the culture change by the new coaching staff. Maybe his work ethic wasn't up to scratch and wise receiver is currently a position of strength for the Jets. He will probably end up as WR 4 but the Jets will have a few tough cuts to make at this position.

Lawson out for the season, thats a devastating blow to the team

  • Registered Users Posts: 528 ✭✭✭corner back 2

Terrible news about Lawson. Jets have no luck with big free agent signings. Lots of teams having joint practices this year and lots of injuries. Makes you wonder about the wisdom of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭SHOVELLER

Anyone else having problems buying tickets for Falcons game?

  • Registered Users Posts: 528 ✭✭✭corner back 2

Terrible first half for Jets. Could be a lot of teething problems this season. Hopefully we will see some improvement especially with the offensive line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Second half was more watchable, but there's still no O-line and Becton gone '4-6 weeks'. Punter gone too. And it's only the first game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

Joyner out for the year as well, more problems for an already depleted secondary. Linebacker position took another hit as well with Sherwoord being hurt

Ooh and here come the Pats this week. Not going to be pretty. Well, I'd hoped for 6-10 this year, feels like that'd be a stretch if they can't field their proposed starters.

Poor Zach Wilson. Baptism by fire and I think Belicheck will have them champing at the bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Quiet thread. The misery to end in a week. Wilson's seemed o.k. for the last month or so. Michael Carter out with a concussion, of course, because he'd shown some signs of competence. Overall #4 pick so far for next year. Meh.

And of course, the most ridiculous player behavior happens in a Jets game. At least it was by the opposing side for a change.

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭Deise boii

Very quite here although there hasn't been much to talk about. Free agency looks like a massive step forward shoring up the o line and finally getting two competent TE's. Can see a WR as pick 10.

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭Deise boii

Good start to the got possibly the best player in the draft in sauce, a weapon for Wilson and in Johnson we can compliment a fully fit Lawson and get some pressure on the Qb.

There has been some upgrade in the corner back room this off season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

Yeah, for a coaching staff that apparently "doesnt put much stock" in DBs, they sure seemed to focus on making that group a lot better this off season.

Really hoping the 3 guys pick can make an immediate impact for the team

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭Deise boii

How are we all feeling with just over a week to go

Like every year. Hoping for the best but getting ready to suffer. Just Endure The Suffering.

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭Deise boii

I'm hoping an 8 or 9 win year all depends on Wilson though. If he makes a leap this year could be a sneaky wildcard team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 123 ✭✭FantasyFool

Lads I might fall in with ye here this year if its ok. Been a Jets fans for about a decade. Things seem on the up. First 5 draft picks looks like hits and Max Mitchell (before the injury) looks like a serious bonus. Still nagging doubts before we beat a really good QB but hope for the future!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

I'm definitely not going to call them world beaters yet, but it seems they have many of the building blocks in place to become a good team. At the end of the day it starts and ends with #2 and what he can do, his first 2 games of his season have been promising

Going into Green Bay after their loss to the Giants will be a really big test and it will be hard not to get excited if they come out of Lambeau with the win

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Hate to say it but Packers are going to be loaded for bear. At home, bad loss on the road. Huge home field advantage at Lambeau. Just hope the Jets keep it close and maybe get a lucky bounce.

As good a win as I can recall, and I've seen a lot of losses. J E T S JETS JETS JETS JETS!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

    What a photo😂

Offense definitely spluttered for a good chunk of the game, but what a performance from the defence. Quinnen Williams was unstoppable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Apparently Breece Hall ad-libbed that TD run, it was supposed to be a flea-flicker to Wilson but he saw daylight and went for it. Defense was impressive, special teams well... can't have been too many games with a blocked punt and a blocked FG.

Wilson did what was needed and didn't turn it over, which is good enough. Off to Denver and catch up with Russell Wilson and friends.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 DwBaileNua87

Hi there, Jets fan since 1997. Should go 5-2 given the Broncos have a MNF, but its hard to be too confident given the last few years.....if we got to the bye week 5-4 I'd be happy enough, an 8-9 or even 7-10 season would be respectable, doing a double on the Dolphins and maybe even the Patriots would be progress in my eyes.

Its almost hard to believe how well the 2 New York franchises are doing this year. JD has done a hell of a job with the last 2 drafts and free agency pick ups. My only concern at the moment is the clear drop off in performance of Garrett Wilson since Zach's return. IN a lot of ways wer back to playing like the early days of the Sanchez era-m good D, Good run game, game manager at qb but limited passing game. Saying that Sanchez got us to the playoffs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Sanchez got us to back-to-back AFC championship games. Arguably the best Jets QB since Namath. Not much of an argument, Vinny T. had an epic year but that was it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Wilson out for Denver today. New RB for Denver and backup QB (who beat the Jets in one of his 4 career starts.) Denver snarling at each other in the locker room. So, perfect opportunity for the Jets.

Now, if there wasn't so much history of what happens in these games....

Still, logic says Jets win today. For what that's worth.

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭Deise boii

5 and 2 who would of thought that at the start of the year but the injuries have sucked all the momentum out of everything well that and Zach looking a lost at any sign of pressure. In a clean pocket he is going well but under pressure leaves the pocket way too quick and isn't setting his feet. I'd be expecting a lot of blitzs Sunday against the patriots.

Do ye think they will trade for anyone there is talk of the browns being open to a trade for hunt it wouldn't be the worst move for possibly a 5th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

They traded for a replacement running back, which was necessary. Let's not give up on Zach yet, he's yet to play a full season and does have a great arm. Saleh's a defense-first guy and has it playing well. Hall is a huge loss, Tucker is a big loss, but all teams lose players. Jets have had 2 high-level QB picks in the last what, 4 drafts? Darnold, Becton, Zack, Sauce... Definitely letting Zach deal for the rest of the season and then decide.

Robinson is a hell of a pick up! But even before that trade I think the AVT injury could be a bigger deal to this offense than Breece, Carters not a bad guy to have coming in, obviously not going to give Hall like numbers, but solid none the less. They're now down 3 of the linemen they started the year with, thats a tough situation and made all the tougher when we see how much Wilson struggles under pressure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

A good reminder of how rare guys like Kevin Mawae /Nick Mangold/D'Brick were and tbf Jumbo Elliott (as a Giant.) Just played and played and.... And, heck, Jumbo had one great catch as a Jet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

yeah, wasnt it Ferguson that missed one career snap!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 123 ✭✭FantasyFool

Ya Id agree. Let Zach at it and see does he sink or swim. He gets flushed very quickly from the box and seems to hold onto the ball far too long. Even the play he got injured on in preseason was needlessly holding onto the ball. Robinson looks to be a good pick up. Personally devastated over AVT- got a #75 jersey during the Summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

D'Brick is getting inducted into the Jets 'ring of honor' this weekend or this happened last weekend.

He's 38. 38! The guy the Jets signed to replace Becton, Duane Brown, is 37!

I say let D'Brick suit up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

A win today, which seems very doable, and one next week which would be enormous and very difficult, means Jets in 1st place.

Buffalo is elite on offense and defense. Jets defense is getting better and special teams have seemingly straightened out the early season mess they were in. But the offense right now is a 'don't screw it up' offense and that won't work against Buffalo. It might against NE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

That was miserable. IMO dreadful roughing call changed the game. Zach was really exposed, too, way too much happy feet. Punter shanks yet another, and killed me to see Folk having a 'field day' kicking.

Next week's bigger now than ever.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 DwBaileNua87

Sickened the Patriots beat us again, that's the worst Patriots team for a good 20 years and we still couldnt beat them.

My 8-9 / 7-10 prediction looking good at the minute, but I'd love to be wrong and have the Jets beat the Bills Sunday. Unlikely, but one can hope.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

I'll take that against the Bills, What a fcuking win!!

Pretty much a perfect game except for the interception after the 'sky cam delay.' Regarding that, here's a quote from Saleh:

Asked what he was thinking during the delay, Jets coach Robert Saleh said, "It only happens to the Jets."

@phatkev was spot on about Robinson. Great acquisition, doing what he's been asked to do and not to be Breece Hall. Now for the bye week, good timing with what seemed like an injury parade early in the game but nothing serious. Then, New England in New England (a mod once got on my case calling them the Belic***ts.) Gardiner is such a great draft pick, flashy and backs it up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 DwBaileNua87

Well now.....we may have a playoff appearance yet.....Fingers crossed we can get a 10-7, probably need 11-6 to be sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Long way to go and an extra game. 10-7 feels like a minimum, which is 4-4 over the remaining 8 games. NE, Buffalo, Miami (end of the season, woo!) as well as Chicago, Minnesota, Detroit, Jacksonville and Seattle. Maybe Jacksonville, Chicago and Detroit can be chalked up as likely wins. The rest, well, teams with the same or better records, Minnesota is 7-1 and we're playing in Minneapolis... Of course, one could really dream and call that a Superbowl preview game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 123 ✭✭FantasyFool

Sick of Zach. The fact that he stood up in the press conference after that game yesterday and took no ownership of what went on tells me hes not our guy. Joe Flacco wins that game yesterday. Streveler wins that game!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Well, we're going to see Mike White again. Zach on the bench. Amusing to see Ryan Leaf being interviewed, a famous bust at #2.

Anyway, it's easy to say "Give White a chance, he couldn't do worse." He can. It's the Jets. Wilson's on the bench because of his mouth not his arm (or lack thereof.)

Jets just NEVER hit with these QB picks. Frankly, they've never had a truly great QB. Namath was mediocre but got on a hot streak at the right time. Vinny T gave them 1 great year. The rest? Meh. Brett Favre was done and made his name elsewhere.

So, anyway, Mike White in a game the Jets should absolutely win this weekend. Their defense is more than good enough to contain what little attack da Bears have. Jets just need the offense to play better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

yeah agree, Wilson definitely deserved to be benched after the performance on Sunday and what followed, but Mike White is not a good QB in any way shape or form! I think the only reason he's getting a shot is because Flacco gets absolutely murdered behind that oline if hes on the field

    Hopefully he proves me wrong

As a lifetime fan of NY area sports, though a Mets and Jets fan first and foremost, I remember the heyday of the "Lawrence Taylor/Phil Simms Giants."

Simms did not have an auspicious start at all, played poorly, injured early. In 1985 and especially 1986, with that defense peaking to otherworldly levels, Simms was good enough to not lose games which is all it took. In the first Superbowl that team won (1986), my favorite trivia question is, "Who were the starting wide receivers for the Giants?"

Lionel Manuel and Bobby Johnson, as in, "who?" Because that's how much they mattered. Bavaro was an excellent TE for them but he mattered more in the 1988 Superbowl (no Phil Simms then.)

The Giants also had an O-line that was peaking, so their game was, hand off to Morris (Joe Morris) the RB, occasionally a short pass, and score enough as the defense was going to destroy the other team. I can see, well, hope, that the Jets can mimic that and I still seem them doing that with Wilson as the QB, not Mike White or Flacco or the other guy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

I think for 1 game he proved you wrong 😁

Slow start on defense but it got going. Even a very Jets-like fumble on a field goal try that was ruled as a forward pass(?) didn't hurt.

Bears aren't good. Jets should have one that game and did so handily. Might've found a couple of backup RB's were actually not bad.

And, to top it off, I learned 2 players nicknames. "Bam" Knight the RB, and my latest fave, Legotron the PK, who tied the team record with a booming 57 yard FG in the rain. Very impressive!

Now, Minnesota on the road, and they were humiliated their last game. Not a good place to be plus Minnesota's got a good record.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

Yeah, great game for Mike White. That Bears defense was decimated with injuries and were just flat out bad, but White done exactly want Wilson hasnt been able do of late and thats work with what the defense gives him. I'd be hopefully for White to have a decent game against the Vikings as well, their pass defense has looked well suspect.

That field goal was awesome, he even had plenty of room to spare

Hopefully the Vikings got that Dallas game out of their system by beating the patriots

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Nice stats from White this week, probably better than Wilson has had in a game so far. But, bad results. Way too many drives ending in FG. Fortunately Legotron continues to come through and at least it went down to the final minute. But, all that's nice, the results don't matter.

And I'm in a bad mood sports-wise as the USMNT couldn't get past Belgium and Jacob de Grom's now a Texas Ranger. Then the Jets lose a big game on the road that was there for the taking. Grrrrrr

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 DwBaileNua87

Flacc sake. Mike White was a WARRIOR last night, but still not reaching the end zone at the clutch times. Based on the form of the 4 remaining teams (Lions, Jags Seahawks and Fins), my 7-10/8-9 prediction is still looking good.

But I really hope Im wrong!!!
