    I'm asking for people's opinions.
My opinion is that you'll probably be fine but it's unknowable.

Reason being is that it comes down to political considerations. The EU may object that we're foot dragging with the green cert whilst giving the UK priority access in the meantime. So despite the recent kite flying I can see backpedalling is possible.

Added to that, we have no way of knowing what the relative infection rates will be in late July. It might be that the UK is higher than the EU due to reliance on AZ (I'm not saying that AZ is less effective, only that it's possible that it may be). If the UK had higher cases Ireland might find it difficult to explain why we're foot dragging on the green cert.

And the green cert foot dragging may be down to IT implementation issues, not policy.

Too many unknowns. Still, I'm optimistic about my August 7 trip to France, but only because the optimism is carrying me through the summer.

My Dad and brother are flying with Ryanair to the UK next week for a funeral. Flying out on Tuesday 25th, returning at 6:30am on Wednesday morning. How does that work for getting tested for the return? Thanks for any guidance.

Test in Dublin before you go to use coming back - it’s mad but the only way. The aim of the test is to show you don’t bring Covid into Ireland but you need to take it before you leave!

No test requirement for entering UK, so if you only get results after flight out, that’s grand.

Flight booked to London tomorrow from Belfast for 3 days. Will enjoy a few pints and a bit of shopping without being made feel like a criminal.

    I despair for Ireland.

Do you? Why is that? Were currently trying to get as many people vaccinated as possible and open up gradually. Exactly the same as the UK has done. We're simply not at the same point as them. But then they're now dealing with new outbreaks of the Indian variant...

    Enjoy the 'shopping ...

NI still haven't clarified their position on international travel. As of now it's just the CTA you can travel to non essential as far as I know. All the other countries in UK have announced their plans except NI. I don't know if there was a fine before if you went abroad? It's a bit grey at the moment in that area.

Can fly to England etc and on to Portugal no problem though. I'll be doing similar in a few weeks unless NI clarify their position.

Have they suggested anytime lines as to when NI will clarify?

The test you present for travel home has to be taken within 72 hours of your return flight. So in your case, you should be able to do one before you go. Test result will take about 24hrs.

    Agree with this.

I'm booked to fly from belfast in early july. In theory I could consider flying from dublin instead based on the positive noises about CTA but I just dont trust FFG to do anything sensible or predictable.

Honestly I'd say by the time of the OPs trip etween Dublin uk it will be fine (we desperately need uk tourism , they will surely have to open CTA?) But theres just no certainties and too much stupidity unfortunately

Don't think so. I see a lot of tourism companies and airlines annoyed at the lack of mention of it at the last briefing. I think the 24th May changes get ratified on the 20th so maybe there'll be a mention there. I'd be going on the basis they probably won't address it this month, which is frustrating for a lot (and lot of us) when all the other UK countries have their traffic light system plans announced.

Apart from those constrained by kids school holidays, why would anyone want to go away in high Summer at all, any year not just now.

Crowds, unbearable heat, choc a bloc airports and so on. I get it, some are teachers, some have kids on Summer break, but unless your job precludes you wouldn't it be far better to just hang in there until mid September or so? Cooler weather, not so crowded and so on.

But before you all descend on me, I understand the impatience to get away to the sun.

Not too mention the price difference. I changed a holiday last week. All I did was move 4 days forward so the entire holiday is in September and I saved enough on the price to add 2 more days.

Personally i won’t be flying until at least close to end of the year anyway. The summer doesn’t bother me. However today i have totally lost faith that travel will ever resume at all. It’s the variants, oh the variants! It’s the constant line from the government, the f****g variants! Non stop… so i can not see travel being allowed for at least this year because by August the RTE headlines will be filled with the sound of the “Timbukto variant” ( B 1245432…5666.556.786) i have given up!:o. Today is the worst i have ever felt since the begining of this pandemic. The problems just seem never ending.

Not every summer holiday or trip is for sun. It's a period of time where a lot of people are free and ideal for travelling, hot or not. Lots of reasons to visit different countries for tourism, personal reasons or for relaxation that has nothing to do with sun. I think even more this year actually that even different surroundings alone will be a reason to travel.

I feel your frustration. Hang in there, it will be over before we think, has to really if other EU (for example) countries allow travel despite the Ouagadougou variants they dream up to stop it.

Still have the crowds and the very busy airports though. More chance of delays July and August too.

Many people are free to travel outside the high Summer season, I don't know why they choose not to.

I think like last year there will be only a tiny window where travel is allowed (was it 3 weeks we had the "greenlist" for last year?)

Am I right Mickey in saying you dont have kids and can work remotely?

In your position I'd be waiting for the greenlight whenever it comes (prob late july , early august) then get on the 1st flight to literally anywhere.

Travel will definitely happen this summer, they just deliberately wont tell us until it's too late and too hard for most people to book anything other than a staycation.

You will definitely fly this summer though. Keep the faith :)

Presuming work is flexible you can just book and move the dates. I have been bouncing a trip to Prague since January and will probable move it from June to July. If the hotel price goes up Ill just cancel it and book another

Micky, all you have to do is keep an eye on the travel fine. If that goes, you, and the rest of us are golden.

June 2nd is it’s expiry, let’s see what happens around that time.

I have family in the USA that i usually ( well used to :o) visit twice a year ( spring/autumn) been doing so the last 15 years. I rarely take a flight during the summer. If i do go anywhere during the summer it’s usually the ferry to Wales or France.

Went after him?? What the hell are you talking about?

I put forward reasons why people travel then and also it's not just sun that they travel for. There was zero in my post that was on the same planet as 'went after him'.

I have heard of people avoiding MHQ by flying into Belfast. Is this a real thing? Is there any way that people doing that can be found out?

Family holiday June 28th to Italy looks a very very long shot now :o

I also checked the flight and there are only 28 seats booked, so can see that getting cancelled over the next short while when Leo makes his announcement official

It is probably better for me that the flight does get cancelled and I might get some money back, cause the resort I am supposed to be going to has been advertising all week that they are open for business

so near but yet so far

To be honest its nothing that can't wait another week or two to go infront of cabinet. Could have been discussed tomorrow and wouldn't have made any difference as there's nothing actionable now in it, doesn't impact any timelines

Considering our Govt have been refusing the sharing of passenger details with stormont for well over a year now, you will be fine

Never was a crisis as they say......

Meanwhile our EU neighbours are not only allowing outbound travel but are actively encouraging inbound tourism with start dates etc. allowing tourists to plan for the summer ahead.

Fear not, the public health doctors and other assorted loons will be along shortly to tell us all we should hide under rocks for the foreseeable while their state salary continues to be paid fully irrespective.

I need to travel to the UK to sort out a passport issue for my wife. Her country doesn't have an embassy here. It's a same day trip - over in the morning back in the evening. I'm looking at travelling in the middle of June.

So don't I need to get a covid test before I go over? But what about coming back?

Should I go to my local Garda station to find out if they agree that my reason for travel is "essential", or will that even matter by the middle of June?

Edit: In case it matters - I'll have a letter from the embassy with an appointment time confirmed.

Why on earth would you even consider going on a family holiday to Italy at the moment ?

    Why on earth not?

28th of June, touch and go regarding the €2k fine.

I'm cautiously optimistic that it will have been dropped by then, if only because it will look so ridiculous when compared to every other country in Europe.

Eh because people want there freedom back. If Italy or any European country are allowing people in on holidays, are Ireland really going to be the only place not letting people go.
The fine for going away expires at start of June, wonder will they extend it
