I thought Saturday/Sunday was always the lowest?

    Hence the (justified) freakout yesterday

Monday and Tuesday tend to be the lowest swab days. We don’t have today’s swabs, but last Monday was 343 swabs. Cases of 575 were inflated as Sunday’s figures were 261 lower than swabs, so Monday was a catch up day.

Are we expecting a nphet press briefing today?

Hopefully over zoom, they need to stop making fools of themselves by lecturing everybody else to work from home thinking it doesn't apply to them.

The people have seen through their sham.

The item on the news about family visiting their loved one in care homes again just made me cry . Just absolutely fantastic that the vaccination allowed that happen

So what was yesterday all about?

    Isn't Richard normally reliable?

We don’t have yesterday’s swabs so we don’t know!

Journalists have consistently shown no understanding of the backlog/reporting delays, so I wouldn't count on that tweet being true at all.

They even got it wrong when we were building up a backlog of thousands

The figures are high because of the increased transmissibility of the new variants. Restriction levels that were appropriate and effective in the past need to be higher now unfortunately, not lower, to control transmission rates.

Restriction levels do not control this disease. People's compliance with said restrictions is what has an effect.

In a country that polices by consent compliance is all. Are we now in a situation where our only lever has been damaged?

Yep, a few journalists back in January told us that the backlog was cleared but we could see from the swab data that it wasn't. The only thing I trust on this stuff is the actual swab data, not what NPHET say and definitely not what journalists report. Pity we don't have the data today, hope they fix it tomorrow

There's a difference of meaning between a backlog.
When we reference a backlog here, we mean the difference between swabs and cases. If there was 200 swabs today and 100 cases and the next day, 200 swabs and 300 cases, we'd say there was a backlog of 100 cases.

When NPHET reference a backlog, they mean swabs taken and not reported within 72hrs. Then cleared the meaning up with the Christmas backlog explaination. Normally they would report 80% of swabs within 24hrs as cases and 20% within 72hrs.

When the swab data is updated, no doubt it will be what we call a backlog, but not what NPHET call a backlog.

Yet large swathes of the country have >5 cases excluding Dublin and other countries on the East coast. Our second most populous city only has 16 cases a day. I cannot see at all how the levels of restrictions are fair, and to say they are drifting upwards when its been the same 5/6 counties for the last two weeks + pretty much is annoying.

    https://twitter.com/newschambers/status/1374060281509376000/photo/1

Sure this can all change very quickly and cases can explode anywhere quickly, but mentioning a drift upwards and not mentioning the particular counties of concern isn't great. Now I am not anti-restriction/lockdown at all, and follow all of them but there needs to be more focus on the counties of concern then pinning everybody under one bus.

You can see the seven day in most age groups ticking up. Hopefully it reverses again and cases come down.

He's hit or miss on his hear say info. Before yesterdays reported case number we had a potentially 333 from positive swabs not reported into cases.

Can someone clarify hospital cases? Is it 359 altogether in hospital? Or is it 359 in hospital and an extra 81 in ICU? Stupid question I know!

This bit really stands out in today's stats

79% of today's cases were under the age of 45

I know we're seeing some in this age group end up in hospital, but I think if this trend continues then the hospital case numbers by June 1st will be circa 50 or less

June 1st sounds like miles away, but it's only really about 9 weeks

The problem is if the under 45's spread it to the over 45s, especially the 55+ age groups

I think the NPHET press conference should focus solely on data, trends, variants, vaccines, etc. Let the Government, cabinet sub committee and cabinet decide re restrictions or else join this conference also once a week.

Is that 359 covid cases in hospital or 359 including x amount of covid cases?
