You're right, but these videos really set a new bar, though. All the boardsie roadies will be insistent on him being part of every contract from now on!

I love the bit done in reverse, where you can see the cars going backwards - made me feel like I was watching Tenet again!

New road layout on millstreet Road opened today by Teerbeg.

It would be great if someone could record a video of the current road for those of us who are not so familiar with the area. It'll make for a great comparison when the new road opens.

And for the authentic experience, just imagine yourself being stuck behind this tractor at Lissacressig ...

If you go a little bit further down that road theres a queue of traffic and a crash!!!

Wow didn’t even see this being built from the main road.

    Big realignment.

Workers out today at the Mill Road overpass. From what I can tell that’s the entire scheme back now since the Level 5 lockdown

It's so crazy that this is the main road linking our second city with one of the biggest tourist areas of Ireland, and for so long.

I often think of just how quiet the current road will be when the bypass fully opens. Suppose you'd still have a little bit of localised traffic, perhaps it might still actually be quicker to use the old road to go between Ballyvourney-Macroom instead of getting on and off the bypass? I wonder might the old road even be quiet enough to safely go for a cycle/run?

It’ll def be busy from Macroom to the Mons Bar junction. West of there will be very quiet.

The Ballyvourney junction is about 100m from the existing road, and the Millstreet Road junction in Macroom is quite close to the town. It’ll def be quicker using the bypass.

Can’t see any way that the old road will be faster.

The only thing is that the old road would be more enjoyable as long as the road ahead is free.

So to go from Ballyvourney-Macroom you'd get on at Ballyvourney and come out the Millstreet road is it? Still don't know all the junctions precisely.

Just to confirm, the entire scheme is 2+2 and full grade separated.

How will the scheme tie in at either end. Hoping they aren’t planning on roundabouts at both ends.

Roundabout at the east end and free flow either the old road starting at a partial GSJ at the west end.

East end is where the planned Macroom-Ovens drops from motorway grade to 2+2. West end would be the terminus of a planned Youghal-Ballyvourney DC

    Yes indeed

There’s a junction at the Clondrohid Road in Ballyvourney (it’s about 100m away from the existing N22 - very close) and on the Millstreet Road in Macroom, just where the town ends.

I can see that being a complete disaster in the morning. Everyone trying to push in from the overtaking lane last minute, it has the potential to be worse than ovens.

Apparently Amber petrol station is being built on millstreet road between what will be the new roundabout and junction to go to macroom. I initially thought it was a car garage with the canopy thats gone up but from asking around its a petrol station.

You know the bit of land to the left of the road between the Riverside park hotel and the Recycling Centre? That was bought originally and flattened in preparation for a new petrol station as a joint venture by (I believe) Paddy Murphy Macroom Haulage and McCarthy's Glenview Motors. As soon as the bypass was announced that was put on ice. Maybe its them who are at that?

Oh didn't know that. Possibly so why did they give up Glenview tho to Applegreen would they not have just moved sites.

They sold the site up New St to applegreen, probably got a decent offer. Noticed since then, their fuel is no cheaper. About 10c a litre in it between Macroom and Killarney. They also have the DOE centre out beyond Teerbeg so I'd say they knew that if they held on they'd get a decent prime spot. Hopefully there's more than just a deli in the new place.

There is a planning application for the existing fuel station at gurteenroe to be demolished and rebuilt with 8 pumps, car wash, shop, deli, etc. That will be two new petrol stations within a few hundred metres of each other.

Hmmm, wonder where on Gurteenroe that is. That parish stretches from where Pat Mac's pub used to be to about the Auld Triangle I think. Certainly, be no harm, they could really do with an HGV pump too. We only have Circle K cards with work and trying to get 46 foot of bus into the one by Kelleher's wasn't happening for me

I was assuming that the planning related to the glenview/applegreen Station currently there, because it includes demolishing no.1 gurteenroe terrace to make site bigger.

Ah yes, the house on the corner. There are a few houses behind the car park, a lad I went to school with lives there. Can't imagine it will be a huge pile of fun with a huge service station directly in front of your kitchen window.

Yep, passed it from the road between the main road and the bell inn (sean tor?)

You can look down the valley. Some engineering going in there. Wonder how long it's going to be before they will close the road to put the bridge in by the castle. They might complete the raising of the other side and install the bridge the same way they did the Bohill bridge.

I'm not too sure, as mercedeslimos says above, there is work going on above the road, very near to the main road, and more work going on below the road

There is no plan to close the ballinagree road I don't think, they are closing kilnagurteen from June until December.

Presumably Kilnagurteen and Cloonfadda will start then. They are the last 2 major structures on the Macroom element.

That’ll mean all structures in place this December, with a lot of work to go in between in the meantime.

Would be wonderful if that section opened mid next year

The roundabout at Coolcower is also needed to complete that element.

I live about 700m from the new bridge on ballinagree Road. So delighted there's no slip road there.
Will be interesting to watch the new bridge at kilnagurteen go up.

The road at clonfadda is closing from May until September so you can't use it from the Bell Inn down onto main road.

Is this the road linking the Bell Inn/Church Cross with Codrum and the N22? I travel this road to work every day. Thanks for all these updates Aisling :)

So obviously there's another bridge going up here I take it. I go for runs on that road as well, will be weird having a little secluded country road having a new primary road built over it.

The new N22 will go under this road here, so they will be starting on an overbridge next month (just like Coolynane Road Upper)

Its mad how they can do this isn't it! Cooleyhane upper is quite impressive. I can't wait to be able to walk it again. We had a few walks last summer but its all locked down now & they have a public notice saying its illegal etc

Has anyone worked out how much time this bypass is going to save time wise ?

I presume it'll take 10-12 minutes to travel it?

My guess is 10-15 minutes off peak, likely more on-peak. It'll also be a far, far, far (insert many "far" here) nicer drive than the disaster of the current route.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,459 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

The contractors were off today so I took the opportunity to have a look around.

I’m guessing that many of the routes were they will have minor diversions will be complete shortly. The Ballyvourney interchange will require closing the current Clondrohid road so they will need to open the road through the junction to allow that road to close. Earthworks are very advanced here.

The alignment of the existing N22 at Carrigaphooca is now visible coming from Killarney. The existing N22 will run through the cutting on the left and the new route will pass to the right elevated above the existing road. The existing N22 will be diverted onto the new alignment for the local road here to allow for closure of the current alignment of the N22.

The Coolyhane Road Upper bridge is almost complete. There is significant earthworks to be done west of here once it does to bring down the level of the land for the N22 alignment. Presumably the crew from this bridge will move to Kilnagurteen.

Work has recommenced on the retaining walls at the Mill Road overbridge. They started here but stopped when the construction lockdown came in but they’re almost complete now. There’s a lot of embankment to complete between the many bridges along here in the Sullane Valley.

Would recommend a drive down the link road between the Bell Inn and the N22 for a look west. It’s super impressive what’s going on between there and Carrigaphooca. A massive project well done.

Work on the last 2 structures on the Macroom bypass to commence shortly with associated road closures:

    L7456 Clonfadda Road: May 4th - September 10th
    L7459 Kilnagurteen: June 8th - December 3rd

Should see all structures on the Macroom section complete in 2021. Be nice to see this section open next year.
