    Hi Guys,

The results are out... Uff.. I'm batch 1.2 in the 40s.. Does anybody know how many people were hired last year from the general stream? How many people are in batch 1?

    Thank you!

Congratulations to all that have passed.
My wish came true, they are actually highly efficient.

You'll definitely be called at some stage. Last year and the year before they went to another batch, batch 1 with an OOM all have a good chance of being called.

Got my results and I didn’t pass this time! I kind of knew I wouldn’t as my interview really didn’t go well, especially compared to another PAS interview I had this year where I passed and did quite well! Anyways, onto the next one! Well done to everyone passing, best of luck with everything! :)

Just a quick question, is batch 1.1 the first batch based on December interviews and batch 1.2 based on interviews in Feb?

I was called for interview in Batch 1 in December and received my OOM for the Business and Finance stream on 17th December. Later on the 17th I received a confusing message about my OOM on the General stream and basically my position hadn’t been reached yet.

Then today I got a message telling me my OOM on the General stream following interview for the General stream, even though I only sat the one interview back in December. So what Batch am I in?! Batch 1 or have I somehow managed to end up in both Batch 1 and Batch 2?!

The whole process and communication is clear as mud!

It sounds like you ended up in batch one of business and finance, and batch two of the general stream. Your interview results from B&F goes towards your assessment for general stream as well. The message about your position not being reached relates to the first batch of the general stream, it was an update advising you that you didn't make the first cut but it didn't preclude you making a subsequent cut (which you then did).

I was just wondering if anyone has heard that they have passed clearance or that they have been assigned to a department? I have been in clearance for a few weeks now and haven't heard anything myself. Fingers crossed it won't be long.

I wish I was as optimistic as you - I was kind of crushed when I got an email saying I hadn't passed. Especially as they marginally failed me on Knowledge of the role of an AO/Self Development which I was a bit stunned by. I wish there was more feedback about whether this was the interview or the presentation, or where the marks for the presentation went.

I've applied for HEO as well, but this has definitely knocked my confidence a little that I could do well in that at all now...

    That's really unfortunate, hard luck!
If you only failed on that competency then you shouldn't worry about the HEO, it means you satisfy all the rest of the competencies, as the hardest part is leadership potential for most people. You could probably email them to ask for feedback, they will have to supply upon request.
It's best to concentrate on the HEO competition now and prove them wrong by getting it. Best of luck!

Oddly my marks for leadership potential were one of my highest ones, which is the one boost I can get from this I suppose! Cheers. :)

If your knowledge of the role was good then self-development could have been where you left yourself room for improvement. In the interview did you express an interest in pursuing further education, training or development if you were to be successful? Or did you point to past instances where you did pursue something like that to support your career? If not, then it's worth considering how you might weave that into your next interview for HEO and you'll probably smash that :)

I didn't get it this time. The interview was the best one I've ever done, which just goes to show how bad I am at interviews. I could have done better on the presentation and I think I was just too shaky to express myself properly, but I got very high marks for "Leadership Potential" as well.

I would suggest to call them! I was placed on 2 streams but both in batch 1.

Are there generally many positions filled from each panel? OOM 9th in my stream just wondering what are my chances

  • Registered Users Posts: 312 ✭✭MrsBean

Your chances are good. You will just need to be patient. If I were you I would wait a month and then contact PAS to ask if there is any movement on your panel and how far away from your number they are. Congrats!

I think you are pretty much guaranteed to be called with OOM 9. Just a matter of how many months. Congrats. I got OOM 13.

Has anyone that has completed the clearance for the 2020 competition, so people from Batch 1 panels issued in December, been contacted asking them for a start date or advising them of a start date yet?

I know we’re in covid times and I also know Christmas was in there too, but it feels like this process is taking forever for people to start in any of these AO posts. 8 weeks and still no one on here has mentioned they have a start date, just seems an unusually long period from a panel been formed to someone starting in a job as a result of this comp.

I should be used to the pace of civil and public service, but it’s hard to be patient after you see PAS contact 20+ people in about 3 weeks from late November/early December from the 2019 panel and in 7 weeks they had only contacted 19 people off the general stream panel.

Since you can only do one interview regardless of the number of streams you apply for, PAS seem to be running parallel but separate processes based on the same interview. It does seem like you are in separate batches for general and specialist as a result. It's totally artificial but if they didn't do it that way then general-only candidates would be at a significant disadvantage in securing what is a limited number of jobs.

I haven't been contacted by a department yet, but I'm glad to see that they fully exhaust panels, just in case my OOM isn't so high when applying for AP in future :)

Is there anyone in the PAS offices to call? Are they not working remotely?

They respond to mails quite promptly ime

Almost all correspondence with PAS is done over email since they're working remotely. I think if you phone you end up being directed to email your query anyway. Check the booklet or your public jobs board for an email address.

It is a frustratingly slow process, slower than I remember. Maybe it’s because of covid that Departments are taking their time with contacting PAS for replacements or contact people that have gone through Clearance about start dates.

I had given them the benefit of the doubt about the slow pace of things because of Christmas, New Year & year end and annual tasks that need to be completed in January but the panel is over 8 weeks old, how has no one started or been contacted about a start date yet? Or have people started or been contact for start dates and just they’re either not on this thread or are too busy now they’re alright Jack to come back to update people still waiting to hear?

Anyone know what number they are up to in 1.1? My guess is 1.2 will be cleared by July/August if going by previous competition.

Well last year the pandemic was an unknown quantity so I'm not sure if it's indicative of how things will pan out this year. I wonder if the rush to fill places before the year ended in the previous panel had anything to do with departments not wanting to start a new year with unfilled positions in case that fed into planning, budgeting and resource forecasting.

Yeah completely agree its so slow, I cant even get a reply from PAS after going through clearance.. its like they send an email and then are MIA for the next week. Very frustrating stuff.

I am top 5 on first panel and still havent heard anything so if they have made any progress with those ahead of me its not much considering how long ago the panel was formed

Last I heard, which was last Monday or Tuesday; they had reached OOM 19 on the General stream.

When they had the panel results out within a week of the interviews in December I was stunned. I fully expected not to hear about the interview results until the New Year, so when they came out so early I thought they must have a bunch of vacancies they need to fill so this will move quick sharp once it starts moving. I fully expected to be in my notice period with my current job around about now. At this rate it’ll be after Easter before I hear anything.

It’s so strange how the competition goes in fits and starts. Nothing for 3, 4 or maybe 5 weeks about the next stage and no indication of how long before you will hear, then they issue a message and you have to dance to their tune and get everything done within a 5 day window. Then complete radio silence for another few weeks, again with no indication of how long before you might hear back, rinse and repeat. And then the interviews happened and the results were out in less than a week, then hardly any movement for 2 months.

The whole process is just so bizarre, frustrating and badly organised. I know they’re hosting and arranging anything from 150 posts upwards at a time on their website but if they’re not able to cope, then they shouldn’t be hosting and running so many competitions or they need more staff.

Again, from my perspective it's really well organised. I get that it's frustrating having to wait, but each stage seems to take place rapidly, and we're not waiting long between stages. The interview process for a single role in places like Google can take 6-9 months. My public sector organisation is similar. I entered many CS competitions at the same time so I see them all ticking along nicely together, so I'm quite impressed with the speed and scale of hiring here.

The only limiting factor seems to be the rate at which departments require new AOs, and PAS can't control that. Spend your intervening time finding HEO roles to apply for :)
