They need to follow Bjorns videos, separate vids for charging, range, interior/exterior done over different days as he gets cars for a week at a time in most cases

I don't even bother with the 'professional' reviewers anymore, a lot of the EV channels are dedicated to showing what the car is like to live with rather than how the car would do on a race track.

Bjorn Nyland is probably the most scientific about it with his range & charging tests. I think the 1000km challenge is a bit ridiculous but it's a decent way to show that driving long distance with an EV is doable without much of a time penalty. The road trips are probably the more accurate picture of a long EV journey

Andy from EVM is pretty good too, he seems to have a more practical viewpoint, and is generally good for a laugh in his videos

That would probably seem too much like real work to them

I like his personality. His documentaries from a while ago were very enjoyable. However, I've zero tolerance for anyone who constantly begs for subscribers. More than twice in a video and they can take a hike, imo.

I do this with Mr. EV for the odd interesting video he might have He's awfully slow paced.

The poor dude had a mini stroke. Good thing he's taking a slower pace...even in his videos :D

Oh right, didn't know, that's no fun.
Doesn't change how I feel about his videos though. They tend to feel unscripted, and while "off the cuff" is good, he does waffle a bit about nothing to do with the video title.

EDIT: His stroke was recent, his earlier videos are the ones ive watched.

Have to say that I like Bob's reviews, he goes into just enough detail about each aspect (interior, exterior, driving, etc. ) without turning it into a feature length movie like Autogefühl, or trying too hard to be crazy zany hyper Mat Watson. It's always going to be a struggle to get enough views given our population and general apathy towards motoring so best of luck to him.

your opinion is bad then imo. He didn't beg, he told people to subscribe if they want to support the channel or go through his sponsor to help the channel

More independent reviewers making a profit at the cost of being asked to subscribe is better than fewer channels with the likes of carwow paying their wages.

Nah. :p:) I'd watch maybe 90 seconds of carwow a year. A bit more of James May. Toping and tailing a video and asking people to subscribe is fine, anything more and on a near constant basis is overkill and desperation. There are more subtle ways too, putting it on the screen. I subscribe to about 11 channels (travel, medical, running, EVs, aviation) and it's possible to build a good following with some personality, originality and good work ('content', as they say) without harping on endlessly about subscribing. Geoff Marshall's train videos are hugely successful, but quite niche, I'll grant you. I used to support EVOpinion on Patreon. Anyway, it doesn't matter really, this is just a difference of a opinion here on boards.

Ah you should have mentioned you have the countrys most exclusive curated subscription box. Bob should have known not to ask someone as influential and powerful as yourself to subscribe!

I watched one of his videos where he did a road trip across France, Italy and Germany (with some Austria and Belgium thrown in I think :))

I though how he approached it was great, he did it the way an ICE driver would plan things, he didn't plan specific charging stops along the way.

I know that many of us would react with horror to that idea, but realistically most people don't want to plan the journey down to the nth degree.

I do think the fact that he didn't plan any hotel stops en route was a bit bizarre, but he did explain that he didn't want to be tied to a particular mileage per day if the public charging situation wasn't great. Personally, I'd plan my hotel stops and just get an idea of chargers on route, so I know where the gaps are

He is a bit of a rambler all right, but he does have a nice relaxed approach to things as a contrast to Bjorn's ultra technical approach

Looking forward to how this series plays out.
I think it's a good idea for journo's to get more used to actually living with an EV, instead of the focus on immediate range that tends to happen.

Tell you what, I was all for saying he was going to be biased but if his last point rings through that MG have no hand in this and he'll be honest I'm going to follow it.

Does that imply he hasnt been completely honest when manufacturers have handed him cars? Ive always found him very VW-centric

AFAIK, he's been given the use of this, for free, for a year, by a small local EV car sales business. That's sponsored in my book. Try telling revenue the use of a free company car isn't a benefit in kind, see how that goes :pac:.

He said he only does 5k km a year in his 15 year old Seat, mostly to the shops & back in Portlaoise, which this is replacing, so a heavily degraded Leaf 24 would be just as good for him.

Basically, I don't expect too much criticism about that car from Bob. His sponsor will still want to sell used EVs from this. Remembering he's bitter Hyundai won't give him any more cars to destroy review, or even answer his emails, he'll have to be careful in future, criticising anything.

That's how the game works - Bob won't be the maverick he claims he is for too much longer, unless he prefers unpaid TikTok fame over actual income :D.

Oh, forgot to mention Stavros did an entertaining review of the MG recently :D. Posted in the original MG thread.

But he already has a comfortable living from what he does and from his youtube channel. Don't think this is going to change him

I have too but that just seems to be every reviewer now. I imagine they understand the cars get them hits and saying anything overly critical means they wont get cars again.

I was more suggesting I'm hoping it'll be an honest review of the experience and not a long term ad for MG

Have you any idea of how much YouTube pays? He's just over 60k subscribers, his more popular videos have a few 100k views. All that pays not much more than dole money

I understand a family man needs to put bread on the table, but I would prefer if he was honest about it.

I'd say Patreon is where the money is for the youtubers. As you said, not much to be made from youtube directly unless you have a massive following.

On this MG thing he is doing... sounds like its ecocars.ie are giving him the car so its they are sponsoring it, not MG, so I'd say that allows him to say what he likes about the MG. It wont be any skin off ecocars nose as they are not MG dealers.... in the meantime ecocars will get loads of youtube hits and shout outs from Bob so win-win for them and Bob has a free car for the year so win-win for him.

The BIK question from Kramer is a good one... Bob should check that out! ;)

No BIK on an EV under 50k

Thats correct but there is some discussion/confusion around that right now if you get the car in 2021 for the first time

I'd be asking revenue and getting it in writing to be sure, rather than getting hit next year when you are doing your tax return.
