Ah you can't be taken seriously, go away out of it!!!

If you think we've been in strict lockdown for a year, you can't be taken seriously.

Interesting approach being taken by Denmark. Looks like our European neighbours are preparing for a way to reopen for Summer 2021.

Comparisons with New Zealand and/ Australia are futile. Its comparing apples and oranges.

NZ and aus are one nation islands thousands of miles from nearest land mass.

They dont rely on ro ro freight. All freight comes in containers and local haulage take over.

We are a two nation island and rely heavily on ro ro freight for food and other essentials.

Arden has done a good job and geography helped.

That's incredibly grim, needing an internal passport to access a restaurant?

Luckily there is a galaxy of liars on hand to say that its no big deal.

'Freedumb' may be permanently extinguished soon, if its not gone already.

Yeah...I'm not a fan of the health passport idea at all.

A wrong example for what you tried to prove to me I was wrong about. Once again she did not come up with an alternative approach to dealing with the pandemic. Just like other governments she subscribed to the lockdown-until-vaccine franchise as have so many others and it worked for NZ. That is all.

    Population density
    NZ 18 per sq km
    Ireland 72 per sq km
    UK. 275 per sq km
Lombardy Italy. 420 per sq km

I’m guessing this is why it was so much easier to control in NZ. To say nothing of the fact that the country is thousands of miles from anywhere. As far as I know there haven’t been any cases on the Aran Isles either.

I did not want to dwell on the reasons, but what you saying there played definitely a massive part. In fairness most intelligent pm would have done just as well there as she did. The NZ case only proves that certain conditions need to be met fir this lockdown-until-vaccine plan to work. Only then the theory that these academic wizards are telling us approximates the reality with marginal error. And that means it is useless practically anywhere else, unless you know which components to adjust so that the they closely resemble those of NZ. All in all completely impractical for a worldwide rollout. Period.

There isn't a country within tens of thousands of miles anywhere near New Zealand that has been badly impacted by Covid...it hasn't impacted that part of the world the same way it has here.

The media simply love Ardern so will go to whatever lengths to force there more weak minded of us that she is some kind of inspiration, it's being going on a few years to be fair!

    https://www.ntd.com/daniel-lacalle-europe-will-see-a-wave-of-bankruptcies_565822.html

Govt. spending combined with growing solvencies will combine to create a double imbalance that works like a pressure cooker. Once the dust settles on Covid...the **** is going to hit the fan. All choices come with a trade-off. We will always say we did what we could to help the most vulnerable, a very human reaction, but the lack of long-term vision will cast the public leaders of the early decades of the 21st century ina very poor light. History books will speak about their dilemma and some will sympathise with them. Others will say that their misguided policies resulting in growing inequality was the spark that the residue anger leftover from the 2008 Euro crisis needed to ignite. My personal opinion is, and I hope I am wrong but I think time will prove the Covid response to be misguided and with the benefit of hindsight, the precursor to something much worse.

    We reap what we sow.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

There will be far reaching political consequences when the dust settles on the hysteria...and we are in a very precarious situation in the Global economy.

Why one of the youngest populations in the EU took on the strictest, most expensive restrictions will be an own goal of our won making...god only knows what the mid to long term political implications for this will be!!!! FF and Fg may very well be reduced to irrelevance.

What in the name of God are you talking about?

9/10 months into it we had 3 approved vaccines, with plenty more to come in the first half of this year. It will go down as the fastest and greatest scientific response to a health and economic crisis in the history of human kind.

Time to tone down the Armageddon predictions and doom mongering for a bit.

Also Ireland's insolvency rate was up 1% in 2020 compared to 2019.

We don’t need to debate though.

    It’s simple and straight forward

    Vaccinate the elderly and vulnerable

    REOPEN fully ..... END

We are at the point of ridiculous if anything other than the above happens.
    Why ?

Risk of covid deaths will be almost zero (the remaining unvaccinated will be at a quarter of the risk we have ALWAYS accepted during normal influenza seasons and beyond)

Hospitalisation will be back to “normal” (abysmal like prior covid times)

There’s no “curve” to flatten anymore as the infection outcomes of unvaccinated will lead to a few sniffles at worse case (85-90% won’t even know they have it)

    Hi folks,

I have the below email typed out and ready to send to all TDs. Thought I’d paste the body here so others can copy it if you want and add or remove bits if you want. Wasn’t sure whether to do a new thread to keep it separate.

Contact details for TDs and Senators:
    https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/contact-us/

    To the TD’s of Ireland

I am writing to you all today in the hope that at least somebody will finally start to listen to one of the many concerned citizens of this country. Come April, this country will have been in lockdown for 6 of the previous 7 months. And it is extremely unlikely that much will change then based on the words coming from our Taoiseach, Tanaiste and NPHET. We have already endured the longest and harshest restrictions in all of Europe but the goalposts appear to be shifting further and further apart everyday. Several experts are now saying that restrictions will still be required even after the country is vaccinated.

It goes without saying that these lockdowns are causing an avalanche of issues in society. And while I’d love to elaborate in detail on each point, I’d prefer to keep this mail concise so I’ll bullet point them below:

Half a million people currently unemployed
Almost 250 Billion Euro national debt
Cancer screenings and other treatments cancelled (Breast Check was down two thirds in 2020)
Children not receiving a proper education
All citizens prisoned within 5km of their homes
    Mental Health deteriorating
Pregnant women not allowed to have birthing partners at appointments
People terrified by dishonest media reporting
    Domestic abuse increasing
Construction closed for periods during the largest housing crisis the country has ever faced
    Social Issues

Why is there so little vocal opposition or even questioning to all of this in the media and from our TDs? Surely there are more practical solutions that can be explored that don’t involve locking down an entire nation? Antigen testing, airport controls, increased ICU capacity, improved tracing to name just a few.

These lockdowns are inhumane and unsustainable on so many levels. Nobody is asking for the government to let the virus rip through the population and kill off the vulnerable. Nobody wants lockdown to end just so they can go and fill up on pints. But the 5km rule should be scrapped with immediate effect. People should be encouraged to go out and get fresh air. Meeting family and friends needs to be allowed in some form with immediate effect also. These are basic human rights. And schools should also reopen immediately so our children can get a normal education again. If we have more Covid related deaths as a result then so be it. There needs to be balance. The needs of the many must outweigh the needs of the few.

Nobody is asking for normality to return tomorrow. And people can appreciate that these are challenging times. But what we really need is some hope. Hope that one day life will be worth living again. Because at the moment, we are simply surviving with the country on life support.
And we already know what lies ahead… austerity.

Please do whatever you can to push for an end to this unsustainable, never ending lockdown.

I was playing the ps4 online with a mate of mine in Sweden this morning and we were talking about this ****show. I asked him what was open over there and he said basically the only things closed are cinemas and theaters and the like. He can go to a shopping centre he can go to a restaurant he can go to a coffee shop he can go to a bar he can get a haircut. He actually told me he has met a couple of women on tinder lately and had “relations”. Can you imagine some people over here hearing the likes of that?! They would collapse in a heap clutching their pearls!

He was saying he cannot believe how much we’ve given up for this thing. It seems to be a parallel universe over there. Of course someone will be along presently to tell me no Sweden is in the midst of some sort of zombie apocalypse but it isn’t. I’d give anything to be over there now for a night out with him.

i mean in the way the government talk about their plans for opening up or the lack of them. a vaccine should bring an end to this but they're already talking about restrictions into summer and Autumn, only being able to visit a beach in your locality for the summer and more lockdown in winter 21 and continuing restrictions going into 2022

define the general selfishness of the ordinary citizens? being a bit ticked off at having to be living under restrictions for another year with several vaccines being rolled out and more to come? i don't understand your mindset anymore we're not talking about a few weeks or months of lockdown anymore

Friend of mine has been saying the government never intend on letting us out of this lockdown, and there will be restrictions in place for years. I've been saying they are being crazy, and of course that's not going to happen.

Now, i really just don't know. Saying we will still have these restrictions, even after the small percentage of people who are at risk get vaccinated, is just utter nonsense. Feels pretty hopeless at the moment, with absolutely no end in sight. Really don't know what they are aiming to achieve by removing any hope of a normal life within the next 12 months.

I think this messaging is getting misunderstood or misinterpreted. Covid will more than likely be with us for a long time and won’t be eradicated, however vaccines and treatments will help us fight it. Public health doctors will always say social distancing, hand washing, face coverings etc will be the future but after awhile these behaviours will wane. The official guidelines will be there as restrictions but they won’t be followed by anyone...
