Yes. Cases were also declining back in November.

We don't know what is driving the rise? Of course we do. Indoor locations, poor ventilation, extended contact between people. This isn't difficult to understand, despite some people pretending that it is so they can act "confused".

Mixing caused it. The Christmas shopping, retail put ahead of lives.

Disaster. And not much from Gov either apart from kicking cans down the road.

They know it is going to get worse, but they ditched Hoolahoop and thought they knew better. Despite all his failings with Cervical Check etc. Hoolahoop has been spot on so far, along with his NPHET colleagues.

But the politicians don't like power to go to anyone else. So sad for all those who will get sick and possibly die.

But Jayzis get the racing industry off the grid right now, and close the betting shops. There must be a lot of influence there.

Way too many connections to government, way too much power, it will never be off the grid

Yes it is difficult to understand how this has escalated so much.

But then again if you include idiots mingling over Christmas and NY it might not be so mysterious. Sick of it now. Sorry about that.

The flu virus also tends to peak around Christmas and early January. The last 2 digits below are Week number.

Only in Ireland do they take a weekend off in a Pandemic . UK vaccinated 500,000 over the weekend, Ireland had a few pints at home.

    Last weekend ?
Brits are going to use a vaccine that is meant to be given in 2 doses 3 weeks apart, forgive one dose to double the amount of citizens and then wait 10 to12 weeks to give them the 2nd dose, against the manufacturers advice .
    Chancing their arm again..
Not a country to be following or looking up to .

Thinking of the vaccination of those in Nursing Homes....

This probably only relates to residents with dementia / alzheimers / cognisance issues, but when my mother was resident in her nursing home, they had to contact me to give my consent for the flu vaccine and I had to go up and sign the consent form for them before they could administer the vaccine to her - and I had to sign a new form every year.

This could be a factor in slowing down vaccinating this group.

And what's more is - did you have the legal power to sign it, as it power of attorney, or did you have it an a nominated family?

If it wasn't for Holohan where would we be.
I know people throw the Cervical debacle at him but since his return he has been a rock. He never wilted under the pressure from Politicans and called it as he saw it. This decent into began when Varader went on Clare Byrne and undermined him. The Government chipped away and Nphet advice and point blank ignored their request to not open Hospitality and Homes . The farce continues now with Schools ...the Government will fly kites all week and most likely next Sunday will delay for another week .

It is. As I said earlier our consent forms have gone to families with the information and we are waiting for them to be returned but with the NY there isn't any post.

The descent came when the FF and FG politicians went to the Clifden elite dinner just 1 day after new restrictions were imposed and Minister Dara Calleary said 'Covid loves to party'. They lost hearts and minds that day. We weren't 'all in it together' from that day on.

The same FF and FG that ignored our dysfunctional health service for decades.

But what families do you send them to - are you going looking through records to see who has powers of attorney or just going to the nominated member on record?

I know siblings with a parent in a nursing home and they are already arguing over it - there is a nominated person - but legally can they make a decision on this and it force to stand regardless of what the majority want?

Don't agree. There's a large group of weak people in society who were looking for an excuse to stop doing the hard thing and go back to doing the easy thing, and they jumped on the first opportunity they saw.

That same group now couldn't give two hoots about any new restrictions. This is where we need enforcement, but for that you need a police force to step up.

Their nominated NOK. Oh we have plenty of families in dispute. We have ward of courts etc. Its an absolute minefield but hey there are experts on here who can tell you more about how this whole process is so slow and why haven't all the nursing homes been vaccinated yet!

What's worse again, is that certain RTE presenters hounded them about the golfgate for days/weeks - and then the same presenters went to a party and sure it's ok to say "sorry" and carry on.

I had Enduring POA - but one year they did ask my brother to sign the form when he happened to be up visiting her.

(eta) I didn't have a problem with him signing it.

    Yes.
All these people wondering why, who never wanted the pubs to close, or were worried for their mental health because the gyms or shops or restaurants were not open.
Blaming NPHET eternally for being "concerned" about rising numbers or infectivity .
And now so concerned about the HSE not "rolling out the vaccine" quickly enough, that they never believed was necessary ,really because " its just flu ", but everyone has to have it yesterday!
Yet little thought for the people who are so sick they can't catch their breath in hospital, or the families that can't have a funeral now for their loved ones.
Or for those who are left trying to make these people better or their last days less painful , and are facing into grim few months in a job that most would be happy to leave tomorrow at this stage after a horrible year .

There is **** all to do now as well though, no Christmas shopping or family meet ups to be done, no hospitality open. Things can only get better, people are spooked.

I in no way agree with what they did but do you really think but for that event, we'd have much higher compliance and common sense? That people would say ah sure look our leaders are doing the right thing, maybe I don't need to go to woodies for decking or to collect my new handbag notwithstanding that I've been diagnosed with covid? I really doubt that.

I notice the roads are definitely quieter around my locality, the local town was like a ghost town on Saturday.

As a family we went to the beach for a walk today, and there was a lot of folk there and in the surrounding areas, lot of walkers. Probably an element of new years resolutions and wanting to get out of the house on a dry day.

But I can see this being outlawed soon too. Simply too many people around. They want us all in the house.

I have not been out of the house since Thursday. Are there crowds of people around? People still having big gatherings? Or is the message hitting home?

Yes I do. The optics were horrendous given what the people had willingly endured for months.

You are missing some lovely weather. It's healthy to leave the house and get exercise and fresh air. You wont be crowd surfed.

Traffic seems quiet our way but I haven't ventured out except to walk the dog.

Plenty the HSA themselves have non essential office workers who could work from home coming in to work every day. Haven't seen this addressed in any media but I have friends who are in this exact position and even though they have vulnerable relatives are being made to attend the office every day needlessly.

Someone said to me that the HSE (when they were doing contact tracing) insist on only doing it in the office with senior staff present - that contact tracers couldn't work from home. Is this true? Seems mad?
