Building sites were generally closed and virus spread massively.

Schools were closed and the virus spread massively

Retail outlets were open and we haven't heard of any large outbreaks. Pubs were semi open and there have been no reports of large outbreaks. If there were then the outbreak in Dublin would be massive but its around what it should be in terms of percentages.

Everyone is wearing masks and the virus is still spreading.

Community spread has always thought to be low. Studies are suggesting Asymptomatic spread is very very low.

Nobody has any idea of how it's spreading. Not NPHET, Not the WHO, nobody. Everything is a beer mat theory.

Agreed, as long as horse racing and betting is included also.

Not only horse racing, anything what has to do with horses.

That industry is just something else.

I think he is talking about a club championship win in Cork. Happened in several counties when clubs won for the first time in a while.

He said a couple of weeks ago, there was no club championship a couple of weeks ago

And look where that got them.

We're in a very bad position now and I don't think you understand that.

I don't think you understand that if everyone followed the guidelines in level 2, 3 and over xmas, we wouldn't be in this position now.

If people don't respect the government, the situation we are in, or the Gardai, it doesn't matter if we are in level 36, or if the army was patrolling the street, they will still act up.

    What's your solution to that?

Look, as a nobody, for what my opinion is worth, the risk of catching Covid, with its risks of serious harm and mortality, in addition to long-Covid, are incentive enough to make me gladly take any vaccine offered to me.

The issue with consent is that the safety profile is based on phase 3 clinical trial data. That means that they have tested it on 40,000 people. The safety data is based on the incidence of adverse effects in this number of people. The phase 4 data is still pending. So, there is a potential that we have not picked up adverse effects less than 1/40,000 (however, to put that into context, that is your lifetime risk of dying from a storm in the US, so extremely extremely small). People need to be consented for this. If they are not, and they develop an extremely rare side-effect, they could sue the HSE for negligence. The HSE has to protect itself.

Also, I am sure that there are lots of the healthcare staff willing to volunteer and to help vaccinate. However, people need to a. Be able to administer the vaccine properly (imagine the scandal if they were not!) and b. Be able to treat a serious allergic reaction if it happens (ditto the scandal).

I am sure that the HSE and government are as eager, in fact probably more eager than the posters on boards to vaccinate us al. But things are never as straightforward as they appear

    Fairly localised outbreaks.

    That was months ago.

Correct. Most club finals were completed by early October. They had a relatively negligible effect.
He is clutching at straws. I was just trying to explain the Cork reference.
    Mayo didn't celebrate either.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

There was a group of a dozen teenagers congregating and not wearing masks outside where I live today. They will all go back to their families. And the spread will continue. Non-compliance is driving the spread

Only in Ireland do they take a weekend off in a Pandemic . UK vaccinated 500,000 over the weekend, Ireland had a few pints at home.

Yes. Cases were also declining back in November.

We don't know what is driving the rise? Of course we do. Indoor locations, poor ventilation, extended contact between people. This isn't difficult to understand, despite some people pretending that it is so they can act "confused".

How has it exploded so much in the last two weeks? Forgive me if I sound like an idiot, but seriously, how?

When restaurants and retail cautiously reopened at the end of June, we saw a gradual creep upwards in the numbers if I remember correctly. Most people I know were exercising caution around Christmas- if they were spending it with family, they were extremely careful in the fortnight beforehand.

Is it visits to homes? Too many people in places like Penneys, buying pyjamas etc for Christmas? I thought we'd see an increase in the numbers, sure, but I thought we'd be on 800-1000 a day, and that it would take more time to show up.

It's getting to be genuinely terrifying. I'm going to stop going for walks with a neighbour, which was my only socialising up to this point. My mother's best friend has it, and her husband is in the ICU on a ventilator. I'm not going anywhere until at least the end of January, other than the supermarket and solitary walks to stop myself going insane.

Exactly, and with Ireland being a country that leads medical negligence cases world wide, you can understand why any consent forms might take time to put together.

The local Super Valu put up a statement on Facebook but it’s worded interestingly, just says they have a staff covid policy and will be open tomorrow, doesn’t deny it like the comments on the Judes page.

People were complacent over Christmas. I heard of people mixing and going for Christmas drinks. In some cases 6 households were mixing. People let their guard down because they thought that it wouldn’t affect them and they were weary after a long year

Mass gatherings in shops, thousands returning home from abroad, Christmas family gatherings..

Do people feel confident in the vaccine?

Yeah, but I can see why anti vaccine sentiment can be rampant in societies/countries where they haven't witnessed mass pandemics in a while.

Disaster. And not much from Gov either apart from kicking cans down the road.

They know it is going to get worse, but they ditched Hoolahoop and thought they knew better. Despite all his failings with Cervical Check etc. Hoolahoop has been spot on so far, along with his NPHET colleagues.

But the politicians don't like power to go to anyone else. So sad for all those who will get sick and possibly die.

But Jayzis get the racing industry off the grid right now, and close the betting shops. There must be a lot of influence there.

You can say that to your doctor and maybe you will feel a little less stressed next week .
Take some time to plan how you will "do your day " safely and make sure you have all you need to be safe at work.
You need to keep your job .

He got it very wrong. They were always the weak point and were essentially neglected. Obviously blame goes to some of the nursing home owners/management too. Most of the deaths came from the nursing homes.

I know lots of people in my social circle who felt they had to go to pubs/restaurants over Christmas, and they wouldn't have gone in June. The government, rightly or not, sent out a message that they wanted Christmas to be relatively normal and people responded.

We know where this spreads fast if you're unlucky to be inside with a superspreader. I think we'll find (in retrospect) that we reopened all those indoor hospitality areas, which infected lots of people, and they then carried silent or low-level infections into Christmas dinners where large numbers of families got together. This all happens in a month with everyone indoors, windows closed, low humidity. That doesn't even touch on the places where irresponsible business owners followed few of the rules.

The US & Canada had exactly the same thing with Thanksgiving - a big spike immediately afterwards. The worst thing is this was completely predictable.

Thinking of the vaccination of those in Nursing Homes....

This probably only relates to residents with dementia / alzheimers / cognisance issues, but when my mother was resident in her nursing home, they had to contact me to give my consent for the flu vaccine and I had to go up and sign the consent form for them before they could administer the vaccine to her - and I had to sign a new form every year.

This could be a factor in slowing down vaccinating this group.

I went into Grafton street on 23rd December. Actually got freaked out at the amount of people, milling about on top of each other
not all wearing masks. All the shops packed. Went for a coffee - two girls in front of me - no masks. One tried to make do with a scarf. Seen to and seated without a squeak. Lots of people that had masks on had them on incorrectly - lots under the chin, noses hanging out. chomping on food, drinking a coffee. Groups of people with out masks socialising, no social distancing. I got out of there pretty pronto. Was amazed how casual people were.

Fast forward to Christmas day - houses around me had two or three cars outside. Visitors in and out. No masks. Relations of mine had people around for christmas day - multi generational - worked out one had seven different social circles in contact over christmas day. All of this is anecdotal and my own observations, but to be honest no surprise how we are where we are. Lots of people simply didn't give a ****e over December once restrictions were lifted.
