    Mod warnings:
    1. Please interact in a civil manner
    2. Do not tell others what to do, or what to post
    3. It is against site rules to seek or offer any medical advice. Please do not post here about your symptoms asking what to do. Contact your doctor by telephone and they can advise you as appropriate
    4. If you have a problem with a post report it and leave the modding to the mods

    In terms of thread content:
    • Treat everything you read here with caution. Anything posted is from an anonymous internet poster. You cannot assume anyone has any "specialist" knowledge whatever they claim
    • Statistics are important to some (and I personally pay a lot of attention to them), but they are of very little use to anyone who is already caught up in this, or indeed knows of people who are caught up
    • Whatever your own views are please recognise others are entitled to different views., Even if at different extremes please do not try and repeatedly ram your views down the throats of those who have differing views
    • Cut out any cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight. If you wish to discuss conspiracy theories we have a dedicated forum for that and it’s not this one
    • If the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources
    • If people wish to flout the restriction rules that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed
    • If you don't want to see discussion about Trump perhaps stay clear of this thread between the hours of 22:00 and 01:00. This is a thread for "breaking news" so please do not expect posters to discuss things happening "now" in other threads. It's not discouraged but equally posters expect to discuss such issues in this thread (added 14/04/20)
    • There is absolutely no good reason top try and forecast or predict daily numbers, so do not do so

All threadbans carry over, but we will reconsider if anyone wishes to discuss it further via PM

From what I’ve heard from my Aussie connections, Australia is pretty much back to normal. Why is it that we can’t be the same, despite Australia having a larger population than us?

Flicking around there on the channels and saw a cricket match on BT Sport in New Zealand. Crowds on the grass terraces having picnics and not a mask in sight.

Well I would imagine it’s the law forces are clamping down on members of public who don’t comply with restrictions and aren’t as lax as the ones here... or the Aussies are just generally more compliant than some of the Irish and taking it more seriously?

The numbers are going to be crazy by January, we are up to 1296 today. That isn't even considering the effect of Christmas eve, Christmas day and boxing day will have with all the family get togethers.

Will it make that much difference, our family for example had been meeting anyway so I don't see what Christmas Dinner would make. Most families had been meeting anyway.

Lots of people will have made the journey home to various parts of the country, extended families and their children calling to houses for a quick visit or for the dinner.

    Doesn't work like that.

From my understanding and from reading posters here, it's based on the following.

Hiding away from everyone, only to look out the window to see what others are up to = Good

Spending time with family = Worse than Hitler!

I mean, I'm still waiting for someone, Tony Holohan included, to show me data, evidence, analysis or whatever, of outbreaks that originated in the hospitality sector. We know there's evidence of it in schools yet, they want them open...
Someone in a previous thread basically said if you don't stay within 5km of your house, people will die...Still waiting for evidence on that one too.

Whilst I don't personally know them, I know of 4 people who came in from the UK and two that came from a hotspot in the USA and they flaunted themselves all over Dublin...Where were the recommendations and restrictions on that?

    Anywho, is what it is

Germany and Hungary started this afternoon after getting their shipments this morning like we did. Nearly everywhere else starts tomorrow morning. Meanwhile we can't get organised enough to start until next Wednesday.

I don't know about that, who visits extended family for dinner in normal circumstances never mind a pandemic.

You really didn't think we'd be up to speed, did you?

That involves using some of the last 10 months to make a plan. We've spent the last 10 months, throwing **** at a wall to see what sticks, in association with Palpatine

    Already happening.

    .

Imagine the positive boost we could have had from seeing an Irish person being vaccinated today and all over the news. It would have shown our intent to get this virus out of our lives. Instead we're a total outlier and we have people questioning why the hell we can't even get a small number of vaccine rolled out for 4 days - reinforcing the perception of a lazy and inefficient public service.

You have multiple families meeting indoors over the Xmas period. This thing is going to explode over the next week.

We can't say we haven't been warned but no people needed to have their normal Xmas period.

No they wouldn't have. Plenty of eejits wouldn't have seen each other for months but pile into a house around Xmas.

Anyway sure let's see what happens. I hope I'm wrong but I'll be shocked if we don't see 2000 cases a day by next weekend.

Dude, why are you setting up your dining table, at the front of your house, to spy on your neighbours?

    That's very strange

So no, you're definitely not doing that right anyways...

Why is it taking til Wednesday for the vaccine to be given? Ridiculous.

It's the HSE. That's pretty much the only explanation anyone needs.

    France is beginning vaccinations tomorrow.
    Germany's already started.

We have to drag it out until Wednesday for some reason. I can only assume the training involves familiarising themselves with reading the labels vials or something, as there's absolutely nothing that shouldn't be prepared by now. They had months!

This should have been ready to hit the road today.

Training for giving a needle? Jaysus.

I suppose it is more training for the storage to be fair.

Ah this will be either be a total success, or... and I do hope it will be a success obv. The two week think is something though. But anyway, on we go. And threads like this will be no more.

I suppose it is more training for the storage to be fair.
    .

To be fair, that was a known quantity and could be mocked up very easily. There's nothing that couldn't have been fully trained up by now.

Also you're not talking about large numbers of doses in the first run, so a small team could have delivered all of them in care home contexts or whatever their first target group is.

Ireland's a small, well-resourced, easy to access country with no logistical difficulties whatsoever. This delay is just mind boggling.

It's an unnecessary delay and it just makes the programme launch look sloppy.

Urulsa von der Layen had even tried to coordinate so that everyone would kick off at the same time, even if it was just for a feel good factor, it's just disappointing to see this being so lack lustre as a launch.

I just cannot get my head around how this isn't an instant launch and one with a big public announcement and first shot. That's what's happening everywhere else and it at least gives people some kind of glimmer of hope.

Right now it feels like there's this huge sigh of relief across Europe, except here where it won't be until Wednesday.

The Irish health services seem to love things like having office hours only 10:45 to 4:15 Tuesday to Thursday - and you'll be sent an arbitrary appointment in the post, which we won't check to see if you've received or discuss with you.

I hope they don't continue to operate at this glacial speed.

The population of this country will not forgive the HSE if they screw this up.

Like you say they've had months to prepare
