My New Year's resolution 10 years ago was to quit smoking. Did that. This year's one was to quit drinking. Scrap that. I'm quitting corona news for the month of January. Happy New Year everyone.

Check HSE website. Sounds like you need to ring GP though.

Have had test done and awaiting results. Just wondering if anyone has had similar symptoms and if positive will it get a lot worse.

Ah right sorry. There's a thread 'Tested Positive' that you might find useful.

Do they still do that Ireland Remembers piece at 6 o clock on Rte ? It used to be before of after the news. Pictures of the CovID victims used to really hit home when you see so many figures but then to see the faces. Might give a few people a good kick up the arse to stay safe.

After reading a tweet from someone working in contact tracing ringing people who have been a close contact and should be isolating and showing symptoms, going out shopping and carrying on as normal.

Seriously, being told to isolate is not the worst thing to happen. I'll be doing good if I get to stay in my room for two weeks and not need to go to hospital for something more serious.

Why are the media avoiding use of the word quarantine this time?

It’s either lockdown or restriction this time.. Am i supposed to feel better?

Never thought I'd be in bed, with a book on NYE.

The city was eerie earlier this evening. It felt like a Monday night in the middle of January. No bars or anything doing take away services. Strange seeing it like that on NYE.

Not that it's a bad thing or anything. Pandemic to one side, NYE is overrated and turns my mood as soon as 12 o clock hits.

Anyway, such is life... Best start planning to lose the weight I've put on over the last 3 weeks

Had to go into Accident and emergency last night in limerick with the young one, just a precaution, she is fine. The place was empty, I was in and out in 40 minutes. Last time I was there I had to wait 10 hours with the father. I'm not trying to point score or prove any points, just for people out there that are worried tonight, hospitals are still well on top of things.

That's a bit like judging hotel occupancy based on the number of people in the lobby...

Just seen reports that there is a massive anti vaxxer movement in France which is putting the vaccine roll out at risk. A far far bigger number of anti vaxxers in France compared to the rest of Europe. What are the reasons for that?

Ok what about if the CEO of the HSE says it. Capicity is down over 70% from this time last year. Hospitals are really quiet compared to last year right now for people that are worried if they need to go in in the NEXT FEW DAY'S or is he in on the conspiracy as well.

I think the French public have a history of mistrust with their government. Possibly is a factor. If it leads to normality in Israel relatively soon. Attitudes are likely to change.

He did not say capacity was down 70% but numbers on trolleys were.
Mr Reid said they had good capacity in hospitals overall heading into Christmas, with the number of people on trolleys down over 70% on this time last year.

However, he warned this capacity gets used very quickly as Covid cases have a "detrimental and disproportionate impact" in terms of bed capacity.

Perhaps people should read the entire piece for themselves.

Reid said case numbers are likely now hitting 3,000 per day, but due to a legacy computer system used to log cases is unable to manage the volume of cases that labs are now processing.

Looks like new variant is especially found in school going children. As well as being more transmissible eg increasing Rt from 0.9 to 1.6 when compared with older variant.

    Sorry for inelegant explanation

    Interesting.

The variant increased among young people because that was the population most open to spread, them being left with the fewest protections. Thankfully it does not bring more severe illness.
But the old variant is the one most common still among older groups.
If the new variant spreads to older groups, which is what has happened thus far with all patterns, it will maintain its higher spreading factor and cause more problems because of higher contagiousness.

Spreads quicker. No sign of more serious illness

Yes but the overall hospital number has gone up despite that?
