Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Fair play Whelan.

I started in Jan to walk/run 2020km by end of December. I used a couch to 10km app. Hit the target about a month ago. Reset my target to run a half marathon.

Started on Sunday- ran 15km- was delighted- wrecked but delighted.

I had stopped running during the lock down as was afraid of twisting ankle (broke it before when I was 17) but said feck it once I saw there was no rush on the hospitals.

I have lost around 12kg-from 114 to 102kg. I would love to get to under 100kg by Christmas but happy with maintaining it also.

    What height are you

Well done to all involved. What sort of steps would people be clocking up daily? 500,000 sounds a lot and it is but broken down over the month it's under 17,000 daily. I'd surpass the daily target of 10,000 steps most days but I know a lot of office worker's who'd struggle to hit 5,000 without making an effort.

Normally pass 10000 here. Days we are at concrete it would normally be closer to 20000.

My daily average is a bit over 16,000 so far this year but I walk a lot on busy sale days. When the big sheep sales were on in August/September I crossed 40,000 steps a few times.

The main aim is to increase the amount you have been doing. November would be a crappy month with dark mornings and evenings. Walk rather than bring the jeep etc. Theres a track around the Gaelic pitch which is 1km. Rather than sit in the car when training is on I will do a lap or 2. Broke my ankle years ago and it's not great atm but will try and get my step goal each day and more

I had two different cheapish sort of fitness watches that took the stride length into account, when setting up you had to walk ten paces & it calculated the distance/stride.
Broke both within a year, just can't keep a watch for the life of me.
Pigsback is great for 'deals' on those kind of watches as I wouldn't always have my phone with me.

    Forgot to post this.
Picked up our Heifer from the butcher.

She weighed 550kg going, 220kg coming back. He said she had a hurt on back end that needed cutting out. Was surprised by that. At grass all her life bar last three weeks ground went to hell and she was in slatted shed in a pen of 8

Very happy, they packaged labelled steaks etc depending on how many in each house as it’s split in two. Frozen and all coming.

    Let the feasting begin !!

I think the first one got a wetting during calving one year, second one got a wallop & didn't work right after, had a pedometer which got an accidental washing in my pocket too.

Some of those fitness trackers are terrible. I used to get digger steps with a fitbit. Have a garmin now that eldest lad used to use. A lot more accurate

Any walk and exercise is good.
But best benefit it needs to get the heart rate up.

As they say, if you can talk and walk you need to walk faster.

I had to go and look, and one of the first mentions of cattle and famine in a search is from an unelected person I have muted. Twitter is a nicer place with good use of the mute button.

Just watching The Hunger now, I can see where she got the thinking from. That some British saw the famine in Ireland as an opportunity to clear out (by natural starvation) the poorest people and free up that land, or at least some amount of land so they could model this country after Scotland & Wales.

Shocked to see my own village featured.

She then goes on to drag the hole out of the point by saying that farmers now are essentially no better because it’s cattle and not people on the land.

As if it would be somehow more acceptable to have 6 million people living in huts eeeking out an existence.

Ah when I saw who was making the comments I never delved deeper than the headline act.

God it was a desperately sad thing, makes me wonder all the more about old maps and old buildings around the place. Who went before us.

That we were once one full third of the population of the then UK.

I've a Garmin Forerunner 45. I don't really believe all the stats it throws out but it's a good device to compare things day to day or week to week.
I've the Connect App on the phone that keeps all the info .

It would be interesting to price them out in a supermarket.

I was wondering the same. Mistakenly didn’t do that. Will know better next time.

Butcher had said I had over €1200 worth of meat- that was probably at wholesale- €3.50/€4/kg.

Ah teacher Sir, the maths, it works out there at €5.45/kg!!
No matter the price you are sure of the quality.

I figured my maths would be caught out- I reckon i under estimated the weight when I brought her box’s in the shed. I had estimated each box at 20kg. (Based on the mince boxes) I reckon the bigger boxes were closer to 30kg when I did a bit of a break down of contents with a friend who is used to getting a heifer killed. The return was higher than the 220kg- closer to 270kg-300kg

I have had sleepless nights trying to figure it out.

And in my classroom, I alway say never be afraid to make mistakes as long as we learn from them- I will definitely learn from this experience,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

270/300 kg would make more sense, I think. Just over 50% kill out, plus a bit for the rejected injury.

Have some bullocks myself around 530/550, wondering should I now feed meals along with clover/grass silage and take them to finish? I think that would have a fairly high protein % and the meal should be energy focussed.
    Opinions are welcome.

I have no clue on finishing side-but o don’t think you are a million miles off. That friend of mine, wasn’t happy with mart prices and kept his bullocks for finishing and still reckons he will come out well from it. But he is a pro at the profit side of things but good land- he has called out to me numerous times and scratches his head on how to make money from the place.

He sells a few heifers off farm to locals- they pay the killing and pay per kg after butchered.

Hi all, didn't quite know where to post this so here is as good as anywhere else.

Just a quick post here, my last in fact, to let you know I'll be closing my account tomorrow.

I suppose I must acknowledge that you lot are the nicest bunch of strangers I've never met:D. It's been my absolute pleasure to be moderating you here with the three lads these last few years. We've had our ups and downs but you've made what could have been a difficult job a most rewarding experience for me. We've worked through our best and worst moments and helped and supported each other and it's stuff like that that I'll remember about you:) We were never afraid of feedback from you and you were never shy about giving it to us if you felt we were handling a situation incorrectly so we had to be on our toes to make the correct decisions every time.

I know I'll be leaving you in great hands here, the three lads I was helping here are absolutely top notch, the soundest lads you could hope to meet so I have no fear of walking away.

All I can say is we tried our hardest to represent you as best we could but anything that's been achieved here this last fortnight is all down to you and you alone. There are so many aspects to this dispute that I didn't agree with and still don't agree with that it would take me hours to put it down again. Suffice to say that I think you have been treated badly here and I refuse to support a site that not only refuses to recognise that but doesn't even acknowledge that, never mind apologise to you for doing so.

Many of you have been carded and banned over this while worse breaches were ignored, it's there in black and white for all to see. Any sanction you have received from me here has been orders of magnitude less that what's being ignored so all I can say is I'm deeply sorry to any of you that I've sanctioned here.

I cannot stand over any of those sanctions so feel free to contact your Cmods to get those reversed, they are unjust and you deserve to have them removed from your records.

So that's about it, folks, it's been an honour and a privilege to have posted here with you and I take nothing but fond memories of you with me.

Really sorry to lose you, Judge, always very fair, and really appreciate the amount of time it took you.

BTW the bullocks are organic so ration would be fairly dear and need to justify itself. Was thinking of something like 2kg rolled barley and 1kg to the rest of the animals.
Bass Reeves had also a good point, stopping the meal to stores 4/6 weeks before turnout and availing of compensatory growth. That would be a great saving.
Probably should move this question across to a beef thread but was prompted by Knight and his freezer full of lovely meat last night.

Thanks for all the hard work, it's no easy job.

I can totally understand your POV on this. The f&f forum is somewhat of a bubble on this site as a whole. The expectation of fair play will always lead to disappointment as it doesn't cater to the business of the site as a whole. Nor will it ever as this will never be a farming site.

The way I use this place now is kinda like the way I used to view politicians (changed view on them again since), that it's here to "be used". Then be utterly hard nosed about everything else to do with it, meaning stuff that's outside of the thinking of the myriad of views on the f&f forum itself.

While ya could say we all support it, my thinking now is I do it in a parasitic way :D

Gutted. Know you from here for years. Liverpool supporter and all. Stay safe. Thanks for all the time you've given to the forum over the years

Are they Angus Hereford types? If the silage is reasonable at all I would bother with meal at all. Minerals yes. Use the grass and your barley next summer and you will see gains of close to 2kg a day in June.

Ch and Lm. They're the first half of weanlings bought last autumn. That could be a good shout. Organic meal is dear but I think 1kg to all until Mid Feb might be worth it. That would be 2.5T. See if I can get 500kg bags.
Yes went with the Himalayan rock salt for minerals.

Organic stock sale in Kilmallock on Sat, will look in. Some non organic farmers pick up stock there too, good quality for anyone interested.

    Big loss to the forum.
    One of the best.
Intelligent, informed and broad minded with a great sense of justice and balance.

Well that's the end of farming & forestry on Boards!!

I know the job was taking a lot of your time especially with the perks of Coke and hookers. But still there'll be a void there.

Feck it anyway now I'll have to put up a profile picture on facebook and try and get into it now for the long posts. However I'll deal with the crowds there now?

Have you a bomb or anything for your way out? I might know a few Chinese lads that love a bit of spam.

    Sale on tumbleweeds..

*You know where to find me if you want a question answered or there's a little nugget of information you've found that you think I might be interested in.

Christ Buford but your going will leave a big gap that no amount of bailer twine, pallets nor cable ties are going to fill :/

That said I understand your position Buford. But Its not going to be the same here without your input and keeping us in line. In all fairness we should have a full 21 gun salute with the cannons and  artillery positioned for full effect. Keep up the good fight.

All the best to you Buford. I have nothing but praise and admiration for you. I only ever come to the F&F forum so definitely in a bubble.

I wouldn’t do your job for all the tea in China.

I took a while to respond to this. I'm still don't know what to say. I assume this all has to do with the vegan forum ???
Jeez. It must have been fairly bad to upset someone as reasonable and decent as yourself. I can only echo all that has been said before .... you will be a huge loss to everyone on here and thanks for all the help over the years.

Best of luck anyway . Shur there's nothing stopping you coming back as your sidekick Junior. :D
