Dean Rock is from Meath for example

What? Where in Meath is he from? I know hes not from Ballymun even though he plays for them but didnt think he was a Meath man.

Edit, his Wikipedia says Garristown. That's in Dublin, though close to the border near Ashbourne.

The referees’ interpretation of the mark seems to be that if it’s kicked from outside the 45 and caught, it’s a mark. No matter what distance it covers.

It's a terrible rule. The vast majority of marks taken are from gammy little kick passes caught just inside the 45. And then the players are given as much time as they please to line up a free kick, even to the extent where referees allow them to go through a full routine of bounces and solos. It adds nothing to the sport.

Agreed. I think most people were completely against it. Strange thing to bring in.

Laois have played Dublin 35 times in championship. NEVER in Portlaoise. A few times in Athy and Tullamore. Nowlan park 2016.

Now that's a terrible indictment on the GAA. There's a historic bias at play. .

As posted previously, since 1974 up to time Leinster council moved all Dublin football games to Croke Park, Of 73 Dublin games in Leinster, 35 were outside of Croke Park and they lost one. To Laois as a matter of interest. In Tullamore.

19 of the games before the decision were finals in Croke Park. Those and earlier round games were mostly against Meath who decided in early 1980s to play their homme games in Croke Park. Most of Dublin's defeats in championship were in Croke Park, a good few times against Meath, twice against Offaly and once against Kildare.

It was the other 11 counties who approved the moving of Dublin games. nothing to do with Dublin.

Also I was disappointed with Meath. From the off they were fearful and never took the game on.

Meath have a 200,000 pop, Kildare 220,000 population. They are predominantly football counties. If Mayo, 130,000 population and Donegal 160,000 pop can be competitive surely the two Leinster counties can.

I was down over Laois last weekend but we have a population of 86,000 and the county is split down the middle between hurling and football. Offaly, Carlow, Westmeath are similar. But you would expect more from Kildare and Meath.

Meath and Kildare really have no excuse, they are footballing counties with decent size populations and very little hurling. Neither of them have won a Leinster title in almost 20 years (not counting Meath's 2010 Leinster as Louth were absolutely robbed of that title). It's really only in the last 10 years that Dublin have become a force and counties outside of Leinster have at least been more competitive in that time than Meath and Kildare. Neither of them have even closed the gap, if anything the gap is getting bigger, in the last decade both counties have struggled to stay in division 1 for any length of time and have even struggled to stay in division 2 at times. They both really should be playing at a higher level.

Very frustrating to watch. Even last night, promising Dublin attacks were stalled by a player claiming the mark rather than throwing out a pass. It adds nothing to the game, and allows dominant teams to slow the play up.

There's a €14 million over 5 years sized excuse. Kildare and Meath got about €2 million between them. Not about the money though, or that's what the Dubs will tell you anyway.

Sorry we don't get to play all our games at home. Suppose thats our fault too? Remember Kildare had to fight tooth and nail just to get a qualifier against Mayo played in Newbridge a few years ago. Sorry about wanting to play a home draw.. you know.. at home.

Also sorry our county doesn't have over 1,000,000 people to pick from, 220,000 isn't much in comparison and I'd guess 20% of that are Dubs. Sorry again.

    It's all Kildare's and Meath's fault. Sorry.

It smacks of a few auld lads who thought that bringing in the mark would lead back to the days of catch and kick football. Most of them seem to have forgotten that such football was dreadful to watch.

That was never going to happen in the modern game where possession is key. What happens instead is uncontested passes into the chest which brings nothing to the game and only serves to slow it down.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,939 ✭✭✭threeball

The GAA need to sit up and take notice at this stage. Football is dying at IC level. Crowds are falling, die hard GAA people aren't even bothered to watch most games any more. Between blanket defences, teams soloing across the 45 for 3 or 4 minutes and the amount of one sided games its time they had a proper root and branch review of the game and decide if they want to save it and what the plan to do so is.

Meath and Kildare both have sizable hurling pockets. And, as mentioned, the rise in populations are mostly due to Dublin families moving in.
And, like it or not, Meath won the Leinster title in 2010 :)
As I mentioned previously, if Dublin were in any other province, the same situation would occur. Nigh on impossible to keep younger players interested after minor when you have the behemoth that is Dublin awaiting you in the province every year meaning there is zero chance of silverware.

Yeah it's massive. It doesn't help that Dublin are a completely professional outfit in comparison to the rest of the country. Here in the Midlands a lot of kids are turning to hurling. Football will be effectively dead within a generation if the GAA don't stop the rot in Leinster.

It's like Bayern Munich versus Bluebell United.

Well those counties let hurling rot so football could thrive so it's only fair game they also do nothing if it swings the other way

Not expecting them to beat Dublin, but, they should be more competitive.other counties with similar resources perform better in the all Ireland series than Meath and Kildare have in the last decade. Regarding home matches of course Meath and Kildare should play their home matches at home and Dublin should play outside of Croke Park, but, it seems the other Leinster counties agreed to this, so that's ye're own fault.

    Nice conditions down the Páirc.

Tip playing O'Riordain, a but of a gamble but if he has an impact it could well make a difference.

For all the past pitch and location problems, it’s a great arena for a game.

    That pitch looks immaculate.

    Fair play.

It would have taken some amount of rain the last few weeks.

    Tipp kits are lovely.

Problem with looking at population is that for a satellite county like Meath lot of the 200k would consider themselves Dubs and end up playing for Dublin.

Knock 25% off the populations of Kildare and Meath and they are still big counties. There are plenty of commuting Dubs in both counties since 2000 who have adult children now playing in Meath and Kildare.

For a lot of the match Meath didn't lay a glove on Dublin. That's unacceptable. 15-20 fit young men should do better than that.

No reason that we shouldn't have more pitches to that standard. Theres more meas in putting in extra terrace or seats than putting in a decent pitch. Theres no pitch in Connaught or Ulster to that standard.

Massive day for Cork football, we really really need this. Buzzing, up the rebels

    Best of luck both teams.

It's great to see a Munster Football Final without Kerry involved.

Nothing against Kerry, just a nice change.

Will Powter missing have as much of an impact as is being made out? I dont know enough about him but is he that important to cork? Bit of a gamble with Connolly starting imo, has a tendency to take some wild swings but is also capable of some magic so will have to see how it goes.

    Expecting a good game anyway.

I'd like to see Tipp win. Yet I'd like to see Cork emerge as a real force!

Must be some motivation for Tipp putting that jersey on..

The Jersey is actually quite nice in fairness.

Tomás even said it was second only to Croker.

I hope the game is actually a good one. Conditions are good as you could hope for really and both teams will feel a win is capable. Obviously Cork are favourites but Tip didn't just come to make up the numbers. I'm expecting a close enough game but Cork and in particular the full forward line shoukd hopefully prevail.

Is it just me or is Cork -6 with the bookies a bit too big? I'd have been expecting -3 at most, should be a close game?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,144 ✭✭✭fyfe79

Tipp jersey is fantastic - hopefully spur the lads on that little bit more.

As mentioned, 5 of the Cork defenders are 22 and under. Powter has lot of experience and a real engine too. A big loss, no doubt.

O'Rourke has said that both O'Riordan and Quinlivan wouldn't be that too well known.

I'm fairly sure any football follower would know of the two, particularly considering the hype around O'Riordan allowed to play.

Talk about being dismissive of the smaller counties.
