You clearly didn't read the context. Excess deaths happen from October-February every single year. The flu isn't an issue this year, it's replaced by COVID.
I said, and you can go back and check, there will likely be a similar number of deaths this year, with or without restrictions.

I am aware of the argument, it is still nonsense

That even without restrictions we would see a similar amount of deaths. Do you honestly believe this?

People are going to die with or without COVID. We'll likely have the exact same amount of deaths as any given year, let's be honest.

If we have the same amount of deaths in Ireland as any other year , in the midst of a pandemic , would you not agree that that shows how successful we have been in containing it , given that thousands are dying all over the world ?
Or do you really not believe it is a serious risk ?

Your coming late into the discussion, the original poster wanted level 5 until next June. Do you think this is logical.

    Again read it and think.

They did not say they wanted it. Nobody wants it.

People have certainly lost touch with reality...
3 or 4 billion is a staggering amount. And we’ve already been paying it for months with possibly months more ahead

Tiny amount in the grand scheme of things and well worth the benefits it provided. I thought it was actually large debt we were getting into by the way some posters were going on about it, before I looked into it

Not sure you have thought that one through. Excess deaths is the measure above the average deaths in that week over the last five years therefore if the deaths happen every year, there are no excess deaths

I think that is the second time you made that very funny joke is it not? Thanks for your contribution.

Have to say, I genuinely don’t get the excess deaths point/argument.
It’s like saying we have a quota and as long as we’re under it, it’s ok, regardless of the facts behind the numbers.

    This thread is bizarre...

People seem to want level 5 lockdown indefinitely, but are also shocked that it is not working.

So they blame the “selfish pricks”... Are the people in nursing homes selfish pricks ? Because it’s spreading like wildfire in those homes. And it was our leaders that chose to cut back on testing.

It is also spreading in hospitals. Something you won’t hear Mr Holohan mention on the TV.

Don’t even get me get me started on the economy. Ah it’s only a few billion we are spending on PUP. It’s only costing a few billion to have no tourism for months. It’s only costing a few billion to have no nightlife in our country for a few months.

    I can’t believe what I’m reading.

Are you saying it doesn't matter if we have restrictions or not, because a similar amount of people will die anyway?

absolute nonsense. 200-500 people die of the flu in ireland every year. there's been 2000 covid deaths so far this year under widespread restrictions and lockdowns and we still have 6 weeks left. if there was zero restrictions, it would have been many multiples of that.

Do you think any economy can continue as normal in the middle of a global pandemic ?

The low numbers are proof of concept for the crude measure of lockdown. The fact that it works is all the more reason not to throw caution to the wind.

It is like living in a valley that traditionally flooded before a dam was built and then deciding the dam that keeps you dry is a waste of space because you aren't flooded at the moment.

He is so naive that he genuinely thinks sending people back to work is all that is needed.

Is there any chance they could close schools early in December, give kids a chance to be clear of that mixing environment for 7 to 10 days before Christmas? Might make visits to the grandparents a bit less risky.

Let's keep full restrictions and save 500 lives that would have died of flu after the covid vaccine comes in. Do you think keeping restrictions would be worth saving those 500 lives.

Overall deficit of 21bn estimsted for the year isn't exactly small to be fair now.

While thankfully not at the higher end of the estimate which was 30bn its still large, thats before factoring in the potential for 2021 with brexit but that's off topic for this thread.

Just a point ...you have to make the distinction that this winter because of Covid restrictions and also increase in flu vaccination this year , flu deaths may not register so highly .
Or are you going to post disingenuously on that too ?

It is a no brainer that those who do not observe the restrictions and are asymptomatic are bringing the virus into hospitals and care settings. Community transmission is huge.

Not as normal no, nobody is saying that but do we really need guards going into dunnes saying you can't buy a pair of jeans. A lot of us think they are killing further parts of the economy who could actually function in this pandemic, namely retail.
