"Silent majority" backs lockdown - Business Post

A "silent majority" of the population backs strict level 5 restrictions and the use of fines to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the latest Business Post/Red C poll shows.

Some 66 percent of people support the move to lock down the country, with just 18 percent opposed. An equal number backs the use of fines...

The larger demographic who read the SBP would be the grey vote so 66% in favour is surprisingly low if I’m being honest.

Not only that, but in all polls I’ve seen, the percentage in favour has steadily dropped slightly!

I suppose you will have to just buy them online now. could you buy them from tesco.ie or an Irish top retailer? if you don't want to give your money to amazon.

Yes agree with you. That headline grabbing poll is in no way representative of a fair cross-section of society.

Even compare to IT poll from 7th October, which must have a similar enough demographic to SBP..

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/poll

    21% fewer restrictions
    45% status quo
    32% more restrictions

Big difference between 66% and 32% in favour of further restrictions.

Yet the Irish times were saying on 6 October that 2/3 were in favour?

5 October more people want more not fewer restrictions:

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/most-people-want-more-not-fewer-restrictions-survey-shows-esri-expert-1.4372433

Edit: Ireland moved to Level 3 from 7 October, so this explains the diff v Oct 7 poll...!

Rte 14 october, majority believe more restrictions required

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/1014/1171568-covid-restrictions-opinion-poll/

The Journal Poll - 16 October, should Ireland increase COVID-19 restrictions? 62% voted to go to Level 4 or Level 5

    https://www.thejournal.ie/poll-do-you-feel-prepared-if-ireland-moves-to-level-4-or-level-5-restrictions-5234932-Oct2020/

All that being said, you could pick holes in all of them, and need more info regarding demographics etc.

Polling these days is extremely inaccurate and hard to do. Most people won’t answer the phone, mobile phones are obviously not listed!
People that are more easy to reach are part of the traditional cohort that have landlines- they're far more in favour of lockdown due to the demographic and age profile

This is similar to the stats put forward by the ESRI that consistent polling shows more restrictons at around 60% and less at around 20%.

The question asked, which is buried in the actual article, was if people would support a "circuitbreaker" lockdown of 2 to 3 weeks - not a minimum of 6 weeks level 5 restrictions.

Must admit I didn't read it. Behind a paywall!

Oh dear, bad timing tomorrow for Mr. Chief CervicalCheck, as he will finally begin to be held accountable for his attempted cover up and this dreadful scandal which took place.

Many in the Holohan fanatical fan club seem to forget this scandal as if it never took place, how convenient!

It's about time Mr. CervicalCheck got his ass handed to him, and for the public to stop this absurd fawning over him as if he is the second coming of Jesus.

Yes you could pick holes in them for sure, but applying some critical thinking to establish who has commissioned the poll, demographics of responders, sample size etc.

It’s behind a paywall but iirc, that article was about the RedC poll, and not a poll in itself, I stand to be corrected.

5 October more people want more not fewer restrictions:

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/most-people-want-more-not-fewer-restrictions-survey-shows-esri-expert-1.4372433

’most people’ is used a lot, but there’s a big difference between say 52% and 70%

Edit: Ireland moved to Level 3 from 7 October, so this explains the diff v Oct 7 poll...!

Rte 14 october, majority believe more restrictions required

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/1014/1171568-covid-restrictions-opinion-poll/

This one commissioned by Department of Health, would be interested in the parameters of survey, and more detail if you have a link

The Journal Poll - 16 October, should Ireland increase COVID-19 restrictions? 62% voted to go to Level 4 or Level 5

    https://www.thejournal.ie/poll-do-you-feel-prepared-if-ireland-moves-to-level-4-or-level-5-restrictions-5234932-Oct2020/

Yes fair enough but 35% wanting to wait and see re level 3 is still larger than most reported percentages, and level 4 is somewhat less restrictive than level 5, in particular no 5km limit and outdoor dining permitted. So in fact a minority of people wanted to move to level 5

All that being said, you could pick holes in all of them, and need more info regarding demographics etc.

I am agreeing with you btw. It’s all about the spin put on carefully selected portions of surveys to suit an agenda - it’s in the government’s interest to have us all believe that if you have reservations about level of restrictions you are in the minority.

Just on this, there was a list published yesterday in the Irish Times with loads of Irish shops that sell online. For anyone who wants to buy Irish it’s a great list. Clothes, food, makeup, presents etc...

Il buy online from the cheapest place possible. The Govt have left people with very little money in their pockets now due to job losses but then try get people to shop local (where the prices are dearer)

Probably taken from the same pool that said Hilary had a 98% of victory in 2016. We all know how that turned out.

Irish retailers would really want to get their act together their online presence is appalling and I checked out some of the above list for xmas pressies but Postage was a killer and with Amazon opening an Irish Dist Centre then Irish retailers are doomed or else get on the amazon platform

A lot of the smaller arty/gifty businesses you'd find on the likes of Etsy.

I agree though, small Irish businesses will have to do a lot of work come the new year on their online presence to avoid disasters like this.

GDP is not an accurate reflection of Ireland’s position on the economic performance since the restrictions. GDP is inflated artificially In Ireland.

GNP or job losses is perhaps more accurate.

Ireland has overcooked its restrictions on citizens and burnt its domestic economy to a crisp.

When you compare the first weekend of the first lockdown to this weekend it’s like apples and oranges, it’s so clear how different attitudes are this time around.

I have seen groups of people everywhere, out walking and standing outside coffee shops drinking coffee, and there are still lots of people sitting on the bollards in town eating food and having a drink with friends/family.
I have also seen small groups mixing in each other’s houses on social media for boardgame/movie nights, which didn’t happen last time.
Or at least if it did they were too afraid to post it on social media.

The city was absolutely deserted for all of March and April last time round.
People were crossing the road to avoid each other while out walking and most went out alone. All I’m seeing this weekend is groups and they can’t possibly all live together.

No amount of closing down gyms and shops and pubs is going to help if there is no public buy in. And there really doesn’t appear to be any public buy in this time around.
Only for the sheer amount of businesses being forcibly closed you would never think we were in level 5.

I saw an article on FB about closing the clothing section in Dunnes last night and every single comment was complaining saying how ridiculous it was. There are far more comments criticising the lockdown than those in favour of it, which has made a refreshing change.

I give it 4 weeks before frustration and tension will build to the point where the government can’t ignore it any more. I foresee many businesses reopening of their own accord in a few weeks time, with or without the explicit permission of King Tony.
His lip service about how we’re all in this together just isn’t washing any more, and won’t pay people’s mortgages and to keep businesses afloat when all this is over and he’s off enjoying his secure pension and retirement.

I love seeing life about the place. It's what I want. My fear is that it will keep numbers rising and the Government won't let us out of this damn lockdown.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago a friend of mine who is a business owner who had said that if he was forced to close there would come a point where he would have to open again regardless of any restrictions, because he’s going to be gone bust of he doesn’t do something quick!

Anyway, I was speaking to another person only yesterday (manager of a business, but not the owner) who said there is an undertone growing within his industry at the minute that if things don’t change quick it’s likely them and other similar businesses will just open en masse. I’ll intentionally not mention the industry for now.... but he believes the pressure is growing!

The numbers will keep rising regardless. It is inevitable.
All we are doing is pushing against the tide.

I think if we all shut ourselves away they will drop but unless we pursue a no Covid strategy then that's not the kind of society I'd like to be part of.
