Another week in paradise…Continuing my tendency to lurch from one short/medium term goal to the next, I’m toying with the idea of doing the DCM Race Series virtual half at the end of October. With the buggy, and not going hard out but still have a pace in mind. i.e. my long run pace (ish). I think it should be manageable with a reverse taper of sorts, if I increase my long run 10% p/w I’ll be at 20/21km 2 weeks before, then “taper” for 10 days or so.
I’ll keep the rest of the week the same in shape. And probably won’t do too much HM specific stuff tbh.

    Monday:

    7km @ 4:46/km

A becoming-the-standard early morning Monday run. Felt a bit sluggish actually.

    Tuesday:

    8km @ 4:36/km

Morning run before work, painting a few estates in Stepaside, it’s pretty hilly up there. Also listening to Sonia O’Sullivan on Irishman Abroad podcast. She really is a lovely person who shares a lot of insights.

    Wednesday:

    Workout

    14.41km @4:28/km average

10km Progression Run (inc. warmup) then CD. Pretty similar session to one I did in June.

Goal was to start easy and accelerate, locking into 4:30 for 4th km then reducing in ~10 second intervals per km from there. This would put the 9th km as 3:40 and the preliminary goal. However, I did fancy making it an even 10k with the 10th km at 5k race pace, depending how it went. The last k was something I chickened out of last time around, so was curious if I would have the legs and head to do it this time.

Splits were (with column for last time too):
Split Target Pace (min/km) June Effort This Effort
    1 W/u 05:30 05:08
    2 quicker 05:04 04:46
    3 quicker 04:49 04:37
    4 04:30 04:33 04:28
    5 04:20 04:18 04:19
    6 04:10 04:09 04:07
    7 04:00 04:01 04:01
    8 03:50 03:51 03:50
    9 03:40 03:44 03:44
    10 Faster 03:28 (only 500m) 03:35

So basically, an identical session, except for a stronger finish really. I.e. I held the pace for an extra 500m which was pretty challenging at that stage in the session. I would have much preferred to do 500m at 03:28 I can tell you.

I really loved the progression run, the session flips on its head about 2/3 of the way through and you go from trying to keep the pace down to hit the target pace to suddenly working to hit the paces. It’s basically a bleep test (without the 180 turns).

    Thursday

    7km with buggy @4.36/km

Needed to babysit E in the middle of the morning, so I did what every good parent does. Threw her in the buggy and off we went!

    Friday

Rest day/couldn’t fit a run in.

    Saturday

    17km with buggy @ 4:35/km

A lovely fresh morning, although was a little paranoid so E ended up with all the winter clothes on! Thought she would freeze with wind chill – well at least she was cosy. Lol

A little longer than last weeks “long” run as per the building to a virtual half at the end of the month. This felt good tbh, I was a little tired at end, but nothing hectic. If someone had said you've to keep running for 4.1km more, I'd have been able I think.
My warm down these days generally consists of some light stretching while E toddles home the last 500m or so.

    Sunday

    6.3km with buggy @4:35/km

A very mixed use run, swung by the bottle bank, stopped at the playground, finished the run at the shop. The goal of this excursion was to loosen anything that might be stiff from Saturday so achieved that even with the break at the playground.

Week: 60km (30km with the buggy)
    YTD: 1715km

I can’t believe September has passed. These weeks are flying by. Interesting that September was my 2nd most mileage month ever, and I ran on 26 out of 30 days. But I’ve not really felt like I’ve been working “hard”. Perception is a strange thing!

    Monday:

    8km with buggy @ 4:37/km

Lovely sunny afternoon, took a spin around Stepaside before dinner.

    Tuesday:

    9.5km @ 4:45/km

Morning run before work, painting an estate in Stepaside. This run was a bit longer than expected due to this estate being larger than expected and on the side of a hill!

    Wednesday:

    Workout

    13km @4:21/km average

WU, then 10/7/5/3min @ MP/LT/10k/5k pace with 3 min rests.

I’d done a similar session early August and really enjoyed so did it again. Similar to the progression run last week, the effort builds fairly gradually on this one. BUT the recoveries obviously are getting proportionately longer. You’d think that helped. Lol

Was enjoying the session, but the last minute of the 10k pace interval was tough. And starting the 5k pace interval I thought I’d never be able to accelerate again. After seeing multiple warnings that I was off pace, I even broke my stride about a minute into the 3 mins and was on the verge of stopping. However, thank god I copped myself on immediately and just said “run hard for 2 mins” – whatever pace it is. And actually ended up hitting a reasonable pace for the 3 min interval (3:38/km).

While I appreciated the pace prompts earlier in the session, at that point I was supposed to be just working hard and didn’t need a watch to tell me that.
Got drenched, but was chuffed with myself for powering through the moment of doubt, a good mental strength day.

    Thursday

    7km with buggy @4.39/km

Pre-dinner run to the shops with E. So had a cheeky break in the middle also.

    Friday

    Rest day

    Saturday

    19km with buggy @ 4:29/km

Nice (in a weird way) to do a noticeably longer run. Almost 90 mins on my feet, which felt mostly fine. The last couple of km was a bit of a struggle to be honest though. Probably over cooked the pace on this one.

I’d usually finish at a strong pace and managed the same here.

    Sunday

    5.2km with buggy @4:43/km

P!ssing rain when I woke up, and reckoned we might actually be stuck inside all day so jut got us out.

It wasn’t the most pleasant run, but happy to get it in the bank.

Week: 62km (39km with the buggy)
    YTD: 1777km

It’s getting harder and harder to keep running “interesting” ! Maintaining a gradual build for a buggy HM at the end of the month and lots of easy running….

A fun week over all though, a 5k TT on Wednesday, and a Half marathon effort on Sunday. Gonna have a mini taper of sorts for next 12 or 13 days before the virtual Half on the bank holiday weekend. Must say I'm looking forward to that.

    Monday:

    7km with buggy @ 4:45/km

Actually felt fairly stiff on this run, so was taking it easy. Even stopped at one point to pick some wild blackberries to go into the porridge in the morning. E loves gathering berries. lol

    Tuesday:

Unexpected rest day – bed was too comfortable in the morning, and then went for family walk in the afternoon slot instead.

    Wednesday:

    Workout – 5k TT – 18:16

After the rest day on Tuesday, I was full of energy so decided to do a 5k TT. I was curious to know roughly what shape I’m in and put down a time on my last day as a 34 y/o.

On the morning I was full of normal doubt, “will I call it a tempo run and hide from hard work?” was a thought I had a few times.

Plan was to try and hit 3:40ish/km for first 3km or 4km then see what I can do in final mile/km. If this came off, I would hit a PB. But I wasn’t stressing about the PB, it is what is.

    Splits were: 3:41; 3:46; 3:42; 3:35; 3:32

The course was a little net downhill (in the 4th km), which accounts for some of the acceleration, and there was a stiff headwind in 2nd km, so I would actually say that the Grade/Wind adjusted splits would be fairly even but I accelerated nicely in the last km. PB is 18:12 (again in TT), so despite missing that I think on balance I’m in roughly same shape as I was back in July which is as expected really.

Fun morning, 11km in all after WU/CD

    Thursday

    7km with buggy @4.38/km

Had a four day weekend for my birthday so took a relaxed morning run with buggy. Felt a little stiff from the TT yesterday but nothing bonkers

    Friday

    7km with buggy @ 4:46/km

Nice hilly easy run with E, again in the morning before breakfast

    Saturday

    5km with buggy @ 4:39/km

Was supposed to do 19km with the buggy this morning, but pawned it off to Sunday. Squeezed this one in in the afternoon instead. Was quite low on energy, so this was 5km more than I wanted to do really.

    Sunday

    21.1km at 4:39/km

Due to timing restrictions, left the buggy at home and got out for this weeks long run at 7.30. Was only going to be 19km but when I was on my own I thought may as well make it up to the Half distance. Was up and down a lot of cul de sacs which hurt pace a bit. Didn’t push the pace, but at the same time probably quicker than I should have been going. Oh well.
1:38 for the distance, which if I did in 2 weeks with the buggy I’d be happy with. The issue with the buggy is that apart from the effort of pushing, there is the effort of entertaining and conversing. After 90 minutes of it, it is a bit tiring!

Week: 58.3km (26km with the buggy)

    Belated Happy birthday.

You're damn close to sub 18 there.

Going by the following couple of log entries you weren't feeling any after effects from the TT effort or are you leaving out those details?

Now I'm not telling you what to do and am no expert but if you consider this week's TT as one to acclimatize yourself. Surely if you have another go this coming week you'll find a few more seconds. Maybe not 17 but who knows?

Cheers, I don't feel close to sub-18 tbh.

I was a little stiff the day after, Thursday, (as noted in the log), but nothing major. I do wonder if my general tiredness on Friday/Saturday was also a hangover or just that I was in holiday mode to an extent.

I'd be tempted to give it a go, but certainly feeling a bit tired from yesterday, I'll see how the week goes and maybe on Saturday or so. Play it by ear.

Half you weekly mileage with the buggy! You are gong to kill the Half marathon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,221 ✭✭✭crisco10

So a boring week this week. I felt really tired for the first half, and generally lethargic. Maybe I had something brewing, maybe the 5k TT and half marathon "effort" had caught up with me. Either way, I was far from in the mood to have another bash at a 5k TT. So literally, this was my week.

5 runs (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sun) x 7km @ ~4.45/km. 2 with the buggy.
Only thing of note, was that E's buggy miles past 1000km for 2020 this week.

Then Saturday was 15k with buggy @ 4:30/km.

The idea on this one was to check out a route for the HM next week. Glad I did, I'll be running around Marlay, but was good to realise that I need to be done by 10 as the park gets really busy from then on. Also good to know the market is still on near the house. The pace didn't feel as fast as it was, maybe was distracted by all the exploring.
If weather was same as this weekend next weekend, I'd be happy!

Weeks total: 51km (29 with buggy)

Best of luck with the half, we had a runner do similar last weekend, she started at 8:10 and finished just after 9:30. They were setting up the market from about 8:30 but we'd plenty of room. Park did get very busy from 9:00am, hope for a bit of rain, that'll keep them aeay

This week was all about resting up for the buggy Half at the weekend.
It’s strange, first reasonable “taper” I’ve done since the start of COVID, and in the space of a few days I had all the feelings. (bar the phantom injury feeling). My easy pace was significantly slower, and as I was doing runs of 5km without a buggy I was thinking how can I do a half, with a buggy and faster…anyway interesting feelings

    Monday:
    7km with buggy @ 4:58/km

    Tuesday:
    5km @ 4:56/km

    Wednesday:
    5km @ 4:58/km

    Thursday
    6km with buggy @4.45/km

    Friday
    Rest day

    Saturday

    21.1km with buggy @ 4:12/km

Virtual “Race” Report (warning: it's is a rambler!)

With the weather forecast not being great, I started to doubt my Saturday morning plan. BUT, it was supposed to be clearing and I thought Marlay park might be quieter for the poor weather which had it’s benefits. So decided to stick to original plan and start at about 8:30.

My main goal was complete and enjoy in ~1:35. I’d a sneaky suspicion I might do ~1:31, and my everything-goes-better-than-expected goal was sub 1:30.

Let my passenger give me the countdown and off we went. Using watch and APP, but watch was primary source, I had set a workout for 21.11km just to be sure I did the distance.

    0 to 5km, 21:55

Tough start, straight into the Westerly wind and rain along the M50 sliproad. Average of first 2km was 4.40/km almost. At this point, I threw out sub 1:30. I didn’t want to be chasing the pace so early and kill myself for a suffer fest later on. With the buggy, it’s really hard when your suffering. Partly because you still need to push it, but also E does need attention from time to time! Settled into a consistent effort, and things did get easier when I hit Marlay park at 3km. A bit of attention needed for E to fix her gloves and take her empty milk off her.

    5 to 10km, 20:50

I actually didn’t have a set route planned around Marlay, but on the morning I thought a nice way to break it down was to do 3 x 1 mile loops, then 3 x 1 km loops and so on. Broke it down into more piece meal chunks then. Problem with that was these were loops I usually did speed work on, so I naturally accelerated on them! Basically spent this 5km worried I was going to blow up later because my pace was too fast, but also happy to see my average race pace improving on the other hand. At some point, I made a conscious effort to talk to E a little more to control my effort. I.e. if I could talk, then I was at a controllable effort level. We discussed at length each puddle we came across, dogs were also a good topic of conversation.

    10 to 15km, 20:46

Pace was a bit worrying still. All be it passed the halfway point at this stage. The park was also filling up with other virtual runners which did create a little bit of a buzz. I do like this part of the race, as the distance seems to start to “disappear” a bit. Lost track of my “lap” count, and ended up doing 4 x 1km. Didn’t make a difference, but I did think of Laineyfrecks and her stones. Lol

Started to dawn on me that my Average pace was still dropping gradually, and each km I did quicker than 4:14/km was edging me closer to sub 90.

    15 to 20km, 20:46

Interesting this 5k split is identical to previous (roughly) – because it felt the same. Perhaps the only thing that was changing was the level of conversation with E was dropping on my end. Had 2 tough moments though. At 1 point had to do a swift 180 turn due to a council truck coming down a narrow path against me (I let out a frustrated shout!).

Then about 17km, E started to get quite antsy. Not to worry, I had snacks stored ready for such an eventuality. Unfortunately, I had to do 2 things with cold hands and tired body. Open a bloody wrapper (so hard, was pulling with teeth and all), and take off E’s gloves. Oh and then hand her the snack. This meant I was sort of running in a stooped over position for about 100m and I think I managed to keep up the pace BUT when it took me a good 300m for my heart to settle from all the effort. Felt like an expensive moment and part of the joys of buggy running.

    20 to 21.1km, 4:18

TBH, and not to sound cocky, this bit was easy and fun. I realised that sub 1:30 was going to happen, and that I had more than enough in my legs to accelerate a bit. My 20th km was quickest of all (3:56 or so), and the last 100m was quicker again.

My watch beeped at 1:28:54 and that was that. I checked the app, and it needed another 50m so I jogged that too. Got a chip time of 1:29:xx which is a bit meaningless given I came to a stop 50m from the end. Lol

Absolutely delighted, and a bit of craic to do it with company. It’s mad, only my 2nd ever sub 1:30, and with a 2 year old in a buggy being pushed. Just goes to show what consistent running can do, even without ANY targeted half marathon pace sessions. All I did was a few LSRs up to ~20km. But I think the consistency of COVID running had given me the legs.

Also happy to have done it with a strong negative split (>2mins quicker in second 10.5km)

Really enjoying seeing all the ACTUAL marathon efforts and stories coming in over the weekend as well. Pretty good buzz, all things considered.

    Sunday

Rest – although I did go for a walk with the buggy, and my shoulders are a bit sore when I started pushing again!

Thanks. Yeah she loves running. If we go for a walk, she won't stay in buggy for 10 minutes before shouting "down down". But if we are running she doesn't complain.

Thanks all - yeah clearly chuffed with it. The standard wasn't crazy high in the virtual rankings but was happy to be Top 50 overall anyway.

It also looks like E was the 3rd woman across the "line" (based on current preliminary results!)

After all the excitement of last week, it was quite a bland, quiet week this week. Between E's birthday, and a generally feeling of tiredness/illness/lethargy, I only got out 3 times in the week.

Motivation has definitely ebbed away a little this week, which is not surprising really. With COVID, the groundhog day feeling comes around every now and then!

ReeRee shared the plan she was using to maintain base, think I might just follow it until I feel motivated to do any more. I'm not going to stress about being a bit bored with it all at the moment! Running is my hobby not a chore, so having 2 lazy mornings over the (occasional) weekend with E is fine by me.

    Anyway, this week:

    Tuesday
7km @ 4:53/km. Felt stiff still, and tired. Pace felt quicker than it was too.

    Wednesday
8km with buggy @ 5:04/km. Again slower than it felt, but a really enjoyable run on a crisp evening.

    Thursday
6km @ 4:52/km. E's birthday today, so out early before all the birthday events kicked off. Just getting a few k's in really.

    Week: 21km (8 with buggy)
    YTD: 1946km

The “goal” this week was to get out and running again, had been getting the feeling of sliding into a rut a little the previous week, which was fine. But didn’t want that to become the new norm.

I always find it strange, it’s like I forget how much I enjoy running, and I only realise it when I get back out again that I need it..?

    Monday:

    5km @ 4:53/km

Early morning spin. Starting easy with this one, lol. Just get out, listen to podcasts and only do 5km. Did enjoy it though.

    Tuesday:

    7km @ 4:54/km

Early start again, my dad was in hospital for a night, so my mum needed help with some stuff early doors. Ran down to her, had a little (socially distanced) chat and back home again. Hardly noticed the run in “commuting” aspect of it!

    Wednesday:

    A life-got-in-the-way rest day.

    Thursday

    8km @4:27/km

Have decided to borrow ReeRee’s base plan and see how it goes. As I said to her, nice to have a plan but nothing mental. And stops me having to Google workouts 5 mins before I go out the door. Also like that it’s effort based, so can do sessions with/without the buggy.

    1st was 3 x 4 mins hard off 3 mins.

This was supposed to be 4 x 4, but I messed my time up and needed to get home. Duh!

Enjoyed it, the pace wasn’t too electric being honest (~10k pace maybe), it was early but maybe I need to explore what “hard” really means to me. I’m more used to going after a Pace.

    Friday

    6.1km with buggy @4:55/km

Another run to help out family. This time my sister needed stuff lashed in a skip. So ran up with buggy, fired it all in in a few mins and ran home. Felt like a strange sort of cross fit session this one. 😊

    Saturday

    14.5km with buggy @ 4:44/km

Back to Saturday morning “long” runs. Painting a few random estates near Ballyboden. Enjoyed it, a lovely morning out. But being honest, I was still feeling Thursday’s session in my glutes/hamstrings a bit. I’d felt them on Friday too. Which is interesting because at the time I didn’t feel I was working hugely hard.

    Sunday

    7.1km with buggy @4:40/km

Another gorgeous (and warm) morning to be out. Just a spin round the block really, legs still a bit stiff/sore too. Nice feeling though.

E is starting to notice Playgrounds from afar now, so have to expectation manage that we aren’t stopping which is working for now. But I think I might have to be more thoughtful with my routes in future to avoid a strop!

Came in around 10k pace for me most weeks, and that was going off heart rate. Not sure if that's helpful :)

Week 2 (well more like 1.5) of the Daniels base plan thingy.

Bit frustrating in the 2nd half of the week. As I was getting my groove on my glutes/hammy on left leg got quite stiff and sore so had to take it easier. Been lucky to stay clear of niggles so far in 2020 which makes it not too bad, and also more irritating. I’ve been drifting the last few weeks, and was starting to get focus back. Ahhhh well.

    Monday:

    7.5km with buggy @ 5:01/km

This was supposed to be a workout, but got stuck in work a full hour later than expected so turned into an easy round the block with E.

    Tuesday:

    11.1km @ 4:19/km

    8 x 400m off 400m.

The target pace was what you can hold for 5 mins, so I used my Mile pace as a guide. Probably a smidge slower than the session intends but not far off (within 10% anyway). So target was low 80s for the 400. Came in at

    85; 81; 83; 84; 82; 82; 83; 80

Session felt ok tbh, the recoveries are quite long, so I was honest and keep them to about 100 to 110 seconds.

I was pooped at end of last rep, but only cos I hammered it for last 100m. But overall session was nice and manageable. (there was even a 19:30 5k in there, despite the long recoveries!)

    Wednesday:
It was raining, and I was busy at work so took a rest day.

    Thursday

    10.5km @4:22/km

    4 x 4 min hard off 3 min recoveries.

Distance covered in each 4 min rep was:

    1.07km; 1.07; 1.11; 1.12

Out before work for this one. Like last week this was something about 10k pace which felt nice and hard without killing myself. Glutes and hammies are still a bit tight, so need to up my stretching/rolling game I think.

Also, does anyone else not do the final recovery and build it into the cool down basically?

    Friday

Left glute was pretty sore so left running out today.

    Saturday

    Same as yesterday

    Sunday

    6km @5:00/km

Really easy and slow to see what leg was like and not amazing. I’ll keep tipping over at this pace/distance and reckon it will resolve in a few days.

Week: 35.1km (7.5km with the buggy)
YTD: 2029km (passed my 2020 target of 2020 in 2020. Yay!)

A seriously low mileage (by 2020 standards) week for me. The hamstring glute wasn’t coming right so popped into physio on Tuesday to make sure I wasn’t running anything in by not fully resting.
Luckily the physio agreed that it was probably just a bit of overloading, so I could keep running just seriously parred back to baseline. And then look at doing more strength training when it’s fully healed again.

    Monday:

    6 km with buggy @ 5:08/km

This was the run that triggered me going to physio as my hamstring was super tight (wouldn’t say sore – more “there”).

    Tuesday/Wednesday:

Nothing – resting, and felt a bit head coldy

    Thursday

    5.1km with buggy @ 5:28/km
Super duper easy. Leg felt 3/10 sore. (0 being the goal)

    Friday

    5.5km @ 4:59/km
Same again. Leg about 3/10 again

    Saturday

    6.3km with buggy @4:55/km

Aiming to do this easy, but finished with a decent km to drag overall average pace below 5/km. Felt ok. Leg about 2/10

    Sunday

    6km with buggy @4:48/km

Same plan as yesterday, same result. Leg at 2/10

Week: 29.1km (24km with the buggy)
    YTD: 2059km

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,221 ✭✭✭crisco10

More low mileage as a I nurse my leg back a bit. The physio gave me 3 exercises (Leg bridge, single leg squats, calf raises) to do 2 to 3 times a week. So I just do one exercise per day, then everything gets done twice a week with a natural rotation. As I get stronger I’ll probably increase the frequency a tad.

    Monday:

    Rest

    Tuesday:

    6 km with buggy @ 5:04/km

Maintaining the easy pace. Leg feeling better, probably down to 1.5/10 on soreness scale! Did some strength work in evening watching GBBO.

    Wednesday:

    6km with buggy @5:05/km

More of the same. 2/10 on soreness.
Short strength session in the evening.

    Thursday

    6km with buggy @5:05/km

Getting Déjà vu yet! More of the same. 2/10 on soreness.
Strength session done in the morning, and moving along nicely there. My tolerable reps number is edging up. Although I amn’t chasing that in any way.

    Friday

    6km @ 4:52/km

Out on my own for this one before first light. What a gorgeous morning, crisp as you like and still as ever. Lovely crunch off the grass too.
Hardly felt my leg – down to 1/10 which contributed to my good mood!

    Saturday

    9.2km with buggy @4:49/km

Decided to “go long” as things seem to be settling down with the glute/hamstrings. Felt good, and nice to paint some random estates. Leg still about 1/10

    Sunday

    6.2km with buggy @4:50/km

Usually get out 1st thing at the weekends, but E didn’t move til 9 so I decided to enjoy a lie-in instead. But luckily kind of had 30 mins to spare later in day so had a nice spin around the block with E. At the moment, all the chat is about the moon, the stars, sun and rainbows. And how the clouds keep moving in front…lol

    Leg at 1/10

Continuing “the keep it ticking plan” and return from injury protocol. It’s definitely still improving but it is not gone, so won’t be doing any sessions really. Still lots of easy running. Still tho, got out everyday this week, and nice mix of with/without buggy.

    Monday:

    5.4km with buggy @ 4:52/km

    Post work spin, nice evening!

    Tuesday:

    7.0km with buggy @ 5:07/km

Similar to yesterday, pace was a bit slower because of road crossing, and bumping into my sister outside the shops!

    Wednesday:

    6km @4:52/km

Out early on my own this morning, nice to listen to Sonia on Irishman Abroad. Interesting chat, if nothing ground breaking.

    Still about 1/10 on soreness.

    Thursday

    7km with buggy @5:10/km

Was pretty cold, so wrapped E up like Joey from Friends and off we went. My dad needed a jump start on the car so brought jump leads down and ran back. A fairly crisp evening! Little to no soreness in my leg.

    Friday

    7.1km @ 4:42/km

Weather was a bit miserable so finished work a bit early and did these miles while E finished her nap then we all made Christmas pudding together when I got home. Felt grand.

    Saturday

    10km with buggy @ 4:49/km

Starting to increase “long” from last week. Leg didn’t feel bad, apart from hamstring tightness toward the end

    Sunday

    7.5km @4:53/km

Completed my 7 day running week on my own for this one. Out at 8am and what a gorgeous morning. Was a tad slippy so took it easy but so crisp and so clear. Was a very nice run this one.

    Leg still “there” at 1/10

Week: 50.3km (29km with the buggy)

Had a cheeky run streak going, but otherwise another week of keeping it handy. I’m not doing my strength stuff daily anymore, as the acuteness of the injury fades, but need to not let them go completely.

    Monday:

    7km with buggy @ 5:05/km

Cold one, E had her hot pack unicorn to entertain her on this one! From a running perspective, incorporate a nice steep hill over the first 2 or 3k and had no ill effects which was great.

    Tuesday:

    6.3km with buggy @ 4:58/km

Nothing interesting here except for throwing in a “1 x 400” at the end (again to feel legs) and got no feedback so I’m starting to think it’s coming right.

    Wednesday:

    7km @4:47/km

Took inspiration of ReeRee and went on a nice route I hadn’t done in a while. Again a few hills so no ill effects.

    Thursday

    7km with buggy @5:08/km

First wet one in a while! Acting as delivery team to my parents, dropped down some stuff. Perfect distance to my parents, there and back is 7km. And allows a cheeky hello too!

    Friday

    6.5km with buggy @ 4:54/km

Nothing strange here. Apart from huge lighting rigs and closed roads in a random estate I was running through!

    Saturday

    15km with buggy @ 5:11/km

Actually was looking forward to this one. Was supposed to be a not parkrun with ReeRee, but it got expanded the day before to a long run together. Fresh morning, but really enjoyed. I fear it was slightly more my pace than ReeRee’s. (at least she is fitter than me!) The hour flew by (for me) though.

    Sunday

A rest day. Streak broken on 19 days, which isn’t huge by other peoples standards, but is a record for me!

After Sunday’s rest day, I was feeling pretty fresh this week. Amazing the difference a rest day can make.

    Monday:

    8.6km with buggy @ 4:56/km

Had heard from a few places about the fairy lights in Marlay, so took E for a spin to look at them before dinner. Pretty nice, it’s about a km through the woods and was busy with families out for a walk. E was convinced that Marlay house was a “castle” – I wasn’t going to shatter her dreams. haha

    Tuesday:

    8km @ 4:31/km

Last week I’d been testing my legs here and there, and Saturday was my longest run in a while. Combined with the rest day on Sunday, I was feeling like I could try a “fast” session. So did a made-up-by-me session of:

    5 x 400m off 60seconds. Splits were: 85, 81, 84, 84, 84.

I wasn’t targeting anything other than working hard to see how my legs reacted, and the path was pretty dark at points so feel somewhat satisfied at those. It’s in line with what I was doing pre-“injury”. All be it only 5 reps instead of 8 or more.

Going to be honest, it felt good to really sweat again.

    Wednesday:

    7km with buggy @5:08 /km

Quick spin down to parents house and back. Had added some Christmas lights to the buggy which E loved turning on and off and on and off and on…..etc
My glute was a little sore after Tuesday though, so going to have to mind that.

    Thursday

    6km @4:59/km

Looking at Strava, no memory of this one. Just a morning jaunt with a podcast I think!

    Friday

    5.3km @ 4:56/km

I actually hadn’t planned a run; but came down from work and wife suggested I go for a quick 5km to wash work off me..haha. Really glad she did, my headspace was night and day when I got home again.

    Saturday

    14km with buggy @ 4:51/km

Lovely weather early doors for this one, it was getting cold as we got to the end though. Went colouring in some random estate in Cabinteely, turns out each cul de sac was a steep hill, so going in and out of each was a very solid hill rep. No harm done!

Oh and E passed the 1000 miles of buggy running mark. Momentous occasion. hahaha

    Sunday

    6.15km with buggy @ 4:47/km

A run of 2 halves really, one to the playground, one home from the playground. Lovely crisp morning for it. (if a bit muddy in places!)
Glute pain is subsiding, so probably ok to do another session this week. Fingers crossed.

Christmas week, was always going to be a do as I feel week
    Monday:

    Rest Day

    Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday:

3 morning runs that were basically identical. About 6km at about 4:45/km. And on each I threw in somewhere between 400 and a km of effort at the end to get the heart rate up.

It was a busy week, so best I could do! Really enjoyed it as a baseload leg stretcher though!

    Friday

Christmas Day – Santa brought me a Garmin HRM – Run, so was dying to try it out. I’m a narcissistic runner who loves data, so lots more potential data on me is pretty exciting. haha

    13km with buggy @ 4:36/km

Had floated this to my wife as the only way to get E to have a nap on the big day, so ran from our house to my mother in laws (where we were having dinner). E fell asleep as planned (only about the 3rd run ever!) and I enjoyed the delights of cheery Christmas day running. Nice to earn my turkey.

The pace looks fast-ish but the reality is that the route is net downhill so was quite relaxed really.

The other data gathered (Vertical oscillation, ground contact balance etc.) looks fascinating, but probably useless :rolleyes:. I can’t wait to dig into it after gathering a few weeks data to play with...

    Saturday

    7km @ 4:58/km

Stayed in Grandmas, so got to try out the hills of Killiney this morning. They were hard work, but in a nice way. Also bumped into (and ran with briefly) an old school friend. So a real Christmas spirit kind of run

    Sunday

    7km @ 4:40/km

Ran back to Grandma’s from a playground visit for this one, painting some random estates in the shankill/Killiney area.

Was listening to a podcast on the Christmas truce in 1914 – fascinating stuff and just mad to think about.

Santa also brought a tshirt that said ‘ (square root)-4. = 2 ; it’s all fun and games until someone loses an i’

    I love it.

Later than usual getting to my log. Holiday season in full flow here! Enjoying a (well earned) break from work until the 11th.

    Monday:

    9km @ 4:50/km

I had a game of pitch and putt arranged in stepaside with a few friends. So jogged up and home after with clubs in hand and about 3 layers stuffed in my back pack. Was an artic cold day and wet, so was frozen frigid on the way home.

My golf was pretty average too (14 over for 18), but my playing partner did have a hole in one. Being honest, enjoyed the chat and catch up more than the golf!

    Tuesday:

    Holidays, more rest days!

    Wednesday:

    Another rest. Love holidays. lol

Although I was working a bit, had a deal to close in 2020 which we managed to get across the line. phew, pressure was on there. (nothing compared to a 5k boards TT though!)

    Thursday

    6km with buggy @4:59/km

Last run of 2020. Woke up to snow lightly falling from sky. So had a dilemma, leave the buggy at home cos it was snowing or bring E out in the snow for her first experience! Went for the latter. It was a very light dusting, but E thought it was “very pretty”. I had never considered the little but consistent rolling resistance provided by snow dust on the ground! Definitely added to the required effort.

    Friday

Had planned to get up and run through the sunrise at 8.40am….see the sun rise on a new year etc.

BUT E was a nightmare and up loads during the night, so meant the day was more about surviving than enjoying a run.

    Saturday

    6.5km @ 4:57/km

A very gentle solo run around the icey paths of dundrum/Ballinteer. Spent most of run on verges or the road, until the end when I relaxed on the last corner before home and then just snotted myself on some black ice. A nasty little gash on my knee as a reward and a pretty bruised wrist (that doesn’t even hurt strangely enough). Got lots of sympathy from the ladies when I got home, especially when I realised I also stepped in dog sh!te.

    Sunday

    7km with buggy @ 4:55/km

An afternoon, pre dinner wander. Nice to be out and I had no lingering pain from fall yesterday thank god. Threw in a 600m effort on my new favourite path in St Olaf’s GAA club to polish it off.

Week: 28.6km (13km with the buggy)

    2020 Totals:

271 Active Days (max streak 19)

No. I just have it in my head as about that. It's lovely path alright. It has a slight for issue for me in that the playground is full view for half a lap

Still enjoying my holidays this week, so the focus was more about relaxing and spending time with family. Still managed a reasonable amount of running, but much like a few others here, I’m somewhat lacking in goals for 2021 that require specific training.

    Monday:

    9km with buggy @ 4:53/km

Ran to Marlay and then decided that I would do a comfortable hard 1km around the concert field for the craic. The buggy had the cover half on, which is a bit of a sail so certainly felt the drag and completed in 3:45. I wasn’t nasty tired when the watch beeped. I.e. I kept running as opposed to needing to stop etc. Nice to stretch legs.

    Tuesday:

    7km with @4:33/km

Had E in the buggy, wrapped up and good to go (a process which takes 10 minutes) and realised the buggy had a puncture! Raging.

My good wife still allowed me to go out the door while I was dressed for it. So took the opportunity to wander up to Fernhill to see the new track there. At moment it’s a tar surface (not sure if that’s permanent?). It’s also just a circle as opposed to an oval.

It’s only 2 lanes wide and has limited verges so sessions would be a struggle if it were busy with other pedestrian traffic. Which I suspect it will be, especially at the kids monkey bars which are right beside the path. A lovely facility to have, and I can imagine me heading up there for early sessions when the mornings get brighter/warmer. I did of course do a cheeky ‘hard’ lap to check the distance, 400m in about 75 seconds.

    Wednesday:

    7km @ 4:49/km

An early morning jaunt on my own. Nothing strange other than the amazing Christmas lights on the house near Deer Park in Mount Merrion.

    Thursday

    7km @ 4:36/km

More aimless running but enjoyable on another lovely bright day. The snow was passing since I went out at 11am.

    Friday

    6km @ 5:06/km

Pretty icey out there, so I was ultra conservative and stayed local. Down to the pitches at Naomh Olafs for however many laps were required to get me a light run out. Absolutely freezing so glad to just get this one in.

    Saturday

    15km @ 4:48/km

Asked for a special pass to go for a long run in middle of day (when it was least cold!). Gorgeous day for it. My target was to experiment with Heart Rate now that I have a shiney new chest strap (I’ve been long suspicious of the wrist based HR). Just keep it in the mid-140s was the goal.

Surprised at the pace to be honest, thought it would be closer to 5min/km. Really enjoyed it and actually felt a little tired later in the day which was a nice feeling.

Week: 51.5km (9km with the buggy)

Regarding Fernhill, they are planning to put the rubber crumb on top of the tarmac. Next time ur up, you may notice the couple of inches space left for it to level it off with the grass.
I believe with covid etc, time constraints cost them to finish it all off in time. They are due to do this in early spring but id imagine as its not essential that time line will slip too.

Back to work this week, ugh. So just keeping it going. It’s really hard to be motivated to keep a shape in January. I like getting out but specific sessions are a sea of good intentions abandoned.

    Monday:

    7km with buggy @ 5:09/km

Evening run with E, a damp enough evening but went up toward ballyogan to paint some estates, pretty slow pace. Assuming it’s because of the wind and hills.

    Tuesday:

    7km with @4:47/km

Out early on my own, based on the January challenge, I was just going to aim to run at 4:50 without looking at watch at all. Was pretty happy how close I got. The challenge is that I generally start slowly and accelerate through most of my runs.

Fun challenge though, will try to do the 60 minute edition before the end of the month.

    Wednesday:

    6km @ 4:57/km

An early morning wander on my own. Encountered a dog walker who was obliviously walking straight down the middle of the path with an extendable dog lead swinging around like a radar ping.

    Thursday

    7km with buggy @ 4:57/km

Nice evening run. The first in a while where the sky was a hint of blue/navy instead of jet black. Spring is coming! Left hamstring a little tight on this one.

    Friday

Rest day. Had planned to go out in the morning, but tbh I just didn’t.
    Saturday

    19km with buggy @ 5:06/km

Had arranged to run with a friend who is a pandemic runner and happy with a pace of ~5/km for a longer run. Ran to Marlay and met him for 3 laps. Really enjoyed the catch up and real life interaction. Was just about to start running home from Marlay and noticed E missing one of her gloves, so had to retrace our steps to find (adding an extra ~3km). Found the offending article and ran home at a bit of a clip for our brunch date with Mum!

The wind was strong enough so pace accelerated quite naturally on last 3km but legs were tired. Longest I’ve run since October I think.

    Sunday

    5km @ 4:50/km

Out on my own early and easy. Really just an excuse to try out the Asics Novablast that arrived on Saturday. Interesting shoe, almost like riding a bike. At slow speeds they feel precipitous but get a lot steadier when you are up to speed. Lots of cushioning with a bit of spring, think they will be a fine shoe.

Also didn't feel any afters from the effort on Saturday.

Last week I said “Back to work this week, ugh. So just keeping it going. It’s really hard to be motivated to keep a shape in January. I like getting out but specific sessions are a sea of good intentions abandoned.”
In the same way January seems like the month that goes on forever, so does this feeling!

    Monday:

    9km with buggy @ 4:42/km

Evening run with E, I fancied a more challenging leg stretcher. So started with a fairly hilly climb to get to the back of Marlay. Then a somewhat impromptu mile TT/Hard Effort on the DBR loop. Just aimed for 6min/mile pace, and came in at 6:05 or so.
Given I’ve never run a hard mile with the buggy, I think this was a buggy miler PB. 😊

    Tuesday:

    7km with buggy @4:43/km

Wet evening so got out and did a few loops in the area before dinner. Enjoyably wet in a way!

    Wednesday:

    7km @ 4:58/km

Out early before work, had thought I was going to do 5km when I left, but ended up adding a few twists and turns to drag it up to 7km. Was just really enjoying the run and listening to Strong Songs podcast (David Bowie on this week’s episode).

    Thursday

    7.26km @ 4:49/km

Another early morning run, more podcasts and very pleasurable altogether. Sort of felt a slight niggle in Right knee (maybe ITB). Will just up the stretching etc and see if it resolves.

I did feel crazy tired on Thursday night though, not sure why. Have been sleeping well etc.

    Friday

    Rest day.

    Saturday

    13km with buggy @ 4:30/km [RESULT: 58:37]

Doing the January challenge with the buggy. I’m not sure if this was the spirit of the challenge, but I had mapped out 3 different routes based on 3 pace options (5/km, 4:45/km and 4:30/km). The plan being that I would run at the pace that came and try to judge what that pace was and match the route accordingly.

Fairly early on, I knew I was certainly going at a bit more a clip than 5/km. I remember a kicking coach telling me years ago that you will always kick it further at the start of a game as the adrenaline rush is there. The “rush” of a challenge was definitely at play. So I decided I was running the 4:30/km paced route (13km)..Toward the end I reckoned I had lost some time on a few uphills so threw in a final 500m acceleration to make up some lost time. I shouldn’t have, I came in at 58:37 (moving time). Obviously delighted with the closeness, but it was a real headf$ck of a challenge, I really enjoy looking at my watch and playing games with the various maths as I run. So to not be allowed do so was strange.

    Sunday

Had planned to go for a run as usual, but my wife made a special request that I didn’t. She’s pretty accommodating generally so I defo owed her one to not go for a change. Had a lovely morning up Kilmashogue in the snow instead.

This week was supposed to be the end of January blues, but the upside of payday was mitigated by extended lockdown.

    Monday:

    6.6km with buggy @ 4:51/km

Super icey out on the paths, so I headed down to Olafs and did laps of the tar path there. It was only icey for one patch which I just navigated carefully on each lap. Was actually a lovely evening out though.

    Tuesday:

    7.4km with buggy @4:56/km

Down the hill to Clonskeagh to paint a random estate, then back the hill home. E was loving going up and down grass verges so lots of bumps!

    Wednesday:

    13.3km @ 4:30/km RESULT: 59:52

    January Challenge: Take 2.

Up early on my own for this, had done some homework looking at the route from last day. My goal was to run at same effort as I had with the buggy on Saturday, which would probably add a take a few seconds per km. Then at each km marker (which I had memorised), I made an estimate if I was +- 4:35/km pace and if so by how much. Then just kept a running total. The intention being I would tweak my finish point at ~13km. By the end, I reckoned I was about 90 seconds ahead of target, so added about a 3rd of a km.

My method worked it appears and very happy with the result. Had also worked up a nice sweat over the hour. From a pace perspective, I’d say I was in z3 most of the time which is a bit junk miley pace wise, but no harm!

Really enjoyed this challenge, literally got me out of bed this morning.

    Thursday

    7.00km with buggy @ 4:53/km

Standard evening run, did a bit of painting of areas.

I did introduce the E to the treasure hunt game though. Rules are simple, I give her a list of things to keep looking for when we are out, and when she has seen them all, she gets some music put on. So today she had to “find” a dog, a crane and a bus. And when she saw the last one (a bus), she shouted at me for Tangled.

Hoping this game will keep her entertained for a while!

    Friday

    Rest day.

    Saturday

    6.38km with buggy @4:52/km

Had planned about a 15km for this one, but after 4 or 5km I pulled the pin and turned home. The combination of wind, rain and cold was just miserable. I’d also stupidly worn the wrong coat and no gloves. By the time I got home, my hands were like spatulas. I couldn’t even get the keys out the buggy, and then had to put up with horrendous pain as my hands thawed out for the next half hour.

    Sunday

Still traumatised by yesterday. No running. My ITB is a little niggly still, so no harm for another rest day either.

Week: 41km (28km with the buggy)
    YTD: 201km

ITB didn’t feel great at the start of the week, so the plan was to have a few days easy running, with more focus on S&C and see if my ITB improved.

    Monday:

No running, but did a good 40 mins or so S&C session. It was fun since E decided to join in, her form was questionable but generally her counting was on point! haha

    Tuesday:

    5.5km @4:55/km

Easy morning running for me. Legs a bit sore from the S&C last night!
Did a similar session of S&C in the evening again.

    Wednesday:

    6.2km @ 4:49/km

    Another easy morning run

    Thursday

    February Challenge time!

All else being equal, I would have not taken this on and taken it handy still but looking at the forecast for next week, I didn’t know when I’d get a chance to run up the hill in a modicum of comfort weatherwise.

The window was quite tight between first light and being back in time for work. My effort route started 2km from my house, so jogged there in dark and started in dark. According to Garmin, I had about 5.5km to run to top of Fairycastle, in 37 mins. I reckoned I’d do it in about 30 or so then I’d figure it out for the last 5mins!

I did Run the Line in 2015 so knew the area well, but being honest, I’d completely forgotten the knack/suffering of relentless climbing! Anyway, managed to keep running for the first 2km or so, then started walking the steepest/roughest bits and got to top in 31mins I think. Then made a mess of the next 3 mins or so, ended up running around on the flat. Finally found a hill to do some steep (ish) reps.

Took a breather and looked around, by now it was bright and Dublin was awake in front of me. The tension as my watch wouldn’t tell me total elevation! But when I got home and checked was 439m in 36:50 or so. Pretty much as expected. IF I do it again before the months out, I think my improvements are more likely to come from better planning of the “spare” time and maybe some measurement error in my favour.

Jogged home again. Total distance for the day: 14km @ a variety of paces!

    Friday

    6.1 @ 4:51/km

Easy around the industrial estate on my own. My glutes were pretty sore after yesterday. I was also quite tired!

    Saturday

    13km with buggy @4:42/km

Lovely longer run with E, the morning was brisk but pleasant. Helped by just running to Marlay which meant quite a sheltered route. Did a perimeter, the DBR mile and the concert field km and ran back home again. Randomly accelerated in the middle for about a mile which dragged the average pace down.

    Sunday

    5.3km with buggy @ 4:42/km

Was quite time constrained, so this was a quick one to the shop for berries.

Week: 50.4km (18km with the buggy)
    YTD: 251km

A fun week this week on boards doing the Spotlight challenge. I’ve a few ideas for the next subject, but am letting a few weeks pass as too much of a good thing and all that!

Running wise, was a bit of a down week. Hence the terribly delayed log (compared to my usual Monday morning!). Just lots of easy running in horrible weather, I did a lot of 1st thing runs so not much buggy running either.

The 1st week in 2021 where I missed my mileage target but such is life. As long as it doesn’t become a thing.

    Monday:

No running, but did a 30 mins or so S&C session.

    Tuesday:

    7.1km @4:53/km

Easy before work. Dark, cold and dropped some stuff down to my parent’s house.

    Wednesday:

    6.5km @ 4:47/km

Another easy morning run in the cold.

    Thursday

    6.1km with buggy @ 4:45/km

    Easy afternoon spin.

    Friday

Was tired, and didn’t feel like battling to get out.

    Saturday

    6km @4:56/km

A snowy and very windy morning, was delighted to just get out and enjoy being inside for the day.

    Sunday

    8km @ 4:50/km

Valentine’s Day so needed to squeeze this in before breakfast! Weather a bit warmer, but still windy, still wet. ugh

Week: 33.8km (6km with the buggy)
    YTD: 301km

More mundane running being honest, my homework for this week is to plot a more constructive course for the next 5 or 6 weeks.

I’d actually fancy trying some more focused HR training, and I think it might actually be a good fit for me because it would allow me do some more workouts with the buggy (as its effort based rather than pace).

    Monday:

    6.7km with buggy @4:56/km

Finally some bright weather, so took a spin to my parents to say hello from the end of the driveway. Strange that this feels like the “normal” way to say hi to granny and grandad.

    Tuesday:

    9km @4:40/km

More bright weather, and actually enjoyed exploring a somewhat new path joining Stepaside to Ballyogan. Opens a few more looped routes for me now.

    Wednesday:

    6km @ 4:47/km

Had planned to go in the evening with E, but had a few late meetings so squeezed this in mid-afternoon on my own. More fresh sunshine.

    Thursday

    7km with buggy @ 4:50/km

    Easy afternoon spin.

    Friday

    7km @ 4:51/km
    Easy run before work

    Saturday

    7.7km with buggy @4:49/km

Had planned the slightly longer run this morning, but looking outside (and at Sunday’s forecast), I made the decision to swap days. Good decision, got drenched so was glad to get home. E had lost a hat and a glove though.

    Sunday

    16.3km with buggy @ 4:48/km

Glorious weather, actually felt “warm” for the first time in 2021. Re-traced some of yesterday’s route looking for the errant headwear and gloves. Success on that front, quite satisfying really!

Was starting to look at heart rate on this run, so aimed to keep it in 140s. Which I succeeded in doing except for the climb up Kill Lane where I fancied the effort required to keep up the pace, peaked at something like 175/180 there and took about 500m to wind down afterward.

Rounded up the distance at the end to hit 60km for the week.

Week: 60.1km (38km with the buggy)
    YTD: 345km

So doing a bit of looking over lunch at Heart Rate training...and it seems the first step is a Max HR test. I've lots of activities from last year or so, but they're all wrist based so dubious quality.

Therefore, I reckon I should do a updated one with chest strap. Was thinking of just doing a 5k TT (after warmup) this week. Be interesting to see where my 5k time is too..

anybody got any thoughts on this? is there a "better" way of testing max HR?

Haven't done it myself but the way I was told was basically get yourself a nice hill and peg it up it. :D

Or more specifically. I've seen this method on multiple sites. There doesn't exist a hill in my vicinity that'd take me 2 minutes to climb unfortunately.
Warm up for 15 minutes on a flat surface. Build up to your usual training pace.

Choose a hill that will take more than two minutes to climb. Run up the hill once, building to as hard a pace as you could theoretically hold for 20 minutes. Return to the base of the hill.
Run up the hill again. Get your heart going at the best effort you could theoretically maintain for 3 kilometers. Observe your highest heart rate on the display. Your HR max is approximately 10 beats higher than the now-noted value.
Run back down the hill. Allow your heart rate to drop 30–40 beats per minute from where it was.
Run up the hill once again at a pace that you can only hold for 1 minute. Try to run halfway up the hill. Observe your highest heart rate. This brings you close to your maximum heart rate. You can use this value as your HRmax to set your training zones.
Make sure you cool-down for a minimum of 10 minutes.

I wouldn't use the watch reading. Fingers and watch would be what I'd use without a chest strap.

No ideas myself but there was a couple of pages of discussion on Laineyfrecks log a few weeks ago that got a few in depth responses!

I hear you on the fingers and watch, but surely if I'm at max HR, it will unlikely that I'll have the mental capacity or agility to count my own HR?

I (un)fortunately have a good selection of 2 minute hills around. Could look at that either.

@edinrunna - thanks, ill wander over to Lainey's log..

Here is what Shotgun and I discussed a week or so ago

    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=116044469&postcount=24

"A 30 minute tests is useful for finding both LT (Lactate Threshold) and Max HR.

Generally you need to pace evenly enough it so you build the pace gradually until you cannot maintain it near the end and literally bury yourself. Good chance if you start to fail at the end you hit max or near max and last 20min avg is probably close to LT.

Overall its better to have a HR strap to target max and zones and in turn training to those zones. If you want to train at HR or use Karvonen. Its worth it IMO. Keeps your easy, easy and can set ranges to control your sessions."

Continued my resolution from last week, I started the journey toward HR based training. The main goal this week was to see what was involved and plot a course...

My early update is because I feel my session this morning helpful, and will be looking for HR based plans based on it.

    Monday:

    7.2km with buggy @4:49/km

Normal Monday evening spin in the buggy.

    Tuesday:

Weather awful and due a rest day – well planned!

    Wednesday:

    12km @ 4:27/km

    Lactate Threshold Test.

So fairly quickly I realised that I needed to get some sense of my heart rate to base any Zones off. I was quite startled to realise that aside from, 1 x 400m effort and the elevation challenge, I hadn’t pushed my HR up at all in 2021. I knew I’d be taking it easy but wow. That’s about 500km since my last consistently high HR effort.

Anyway, plan was to try the approach above of run hard for 30 mins, with the last 20 minutes being the measurement period. Set up the Garmin Workout and off I went.

It was pretty blustery, and hilly but can’t help but feel I didn’t really hit max effort. It was hard, and I was hanging a little at the end, but far from needing a bucket. My pace wasn’t amazing either – but that wouldn’t be unexpected give the volume of easy running I’ve been doing.

Result of the test is that my average HR for the last 20 was 174, (the max was only 183). I’ll use this for now and see what happens. This implies the following zones (I think):

    Z1: <148
    Z2: 149 to 159
    Z3: 160 to 169
    Z4: 170 to 179
    Z5: 180+

I have the Matt Fitzgerald 80/20 book. Can drop it up on a run if you want a goo. I won't be using it in the next while anyway I think!
