“A police state is a government that exercises power through the power of the police force”

Bingo! A totalitarian state controlled by a political police force. We don't live in one.

They tried to rule with the carrot if we had we could well still be in level 2. It did not work so here comes the stick

But the stick doesn’t seem to work either. Some EU countries have a police force with greater powers for enforcement, much lower tolerance for transgression along with fines, but I hasn’t seemed to make much difference to the Covid case curve.

Remember the sole reason we are in level 5 is the complete ineptitude of government to shore up health system.

Trying to settle argument here. Currently all the kids allowed out playing on the road. After tonight some are being kept in and not allowed go out due to the restrictions. What's the official rules now and after midnight regarding kids playing on the road/field outside?

Let your kids play freely and enjoy the few years of carefree youth that no child should be denied.

Let your children run wild and free! 'Cos as the old saying goes, "Let your children run wild and free".

They probably shouldn't be playing on the road after midnight

    Found this:

Outdoor playgrounds, play areas and parks will remain open with protective measures, so I suppose use your own judgment ...

They're together all day at school I'm assuming? What's the difference with that and playing outside in the evenings? They're probably more socially distanced playing outside than stuck side by side in a classroom...

I would also say it is also the complete ignorance of some to follow the advice. If it doesn't work well we will see

Imagine being the child of some of the hysteria-merchants in the main thread.

Poor kids are probably terrified they're going to inadvertently murder their grannies.

    Wow, quite the stick
Earlier, Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors General Secretary Antoinette Cunningham warned that the legislation could "cause difficulties".

In a statement she said: "We remain concerned about the practicalities of issuing on-the-spot fines in relation to house parties and other matters."

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne, Ms Cunningham said spot fines should not be a panacea to all Covid-related policing issues.

There will always be some of that I agree, not convinced that’s the main reason cases are rising.

I’m hoping as much as anyone else that these measures bring cases down. But if this is the only way to bring cases down there needs to be another solution offered.

From what I can gather, it's €50 for facemask breaches, €200 for breaching the 5km limits and €1000 for house parties (for the first offence).

But, isn't the 5km for exercise? Such a stupid rule.

Pressure on the health service leads to deaths

Complete lack of pressure on the health service leads to even more deaths.

They have said today they have serious concerns about these new penalties and how they can be enforced especially around house parties.

If the home owner doesn't open the door to them there is no more they can do

They are not allowed to be within 2 metres of anyone outside their house hold and since they are kids that will either ignore or not understand this they should not be let out.

Another big advantage of living in the country, no just “going out to play”. Much easier to keep kids and teens under control.

They can never reproduce, they won’t be able to stand within 2m of a stranger

Nope. You should only be outside the 5km radius for essential reasons (according to the rules).

People are overthinking all this... as per...

I too live in the "countryside" - where kids most definitely do "go out and play" - so I'm apparently not in the same countryside as Nox. Chances of a Garda checkpoint in my neck of the woods?...less than zero. Do as you please in your own house / garden / social bubble, whatever the hell you want to call it. That's what I am doing and from what I can tell, its exactly what my neighbours are doing too. Kids are mingling in schools / after-school facilities all day.

Kids can walk indoors anywhere mask free. As this is such an "extremely contagious" virus, so much so that outdoor gatherings above 12 must wear masks, why are kids mask free but still required indoors after lockdown comes in, explain the logic..you are 20 times less likely to pick this up outside if your an adult next to a covid carrier. These are all facts and figures from nephet that we may have forgotten because the rules have changed with the utmost of frequency.

So if I'm getting this right, the HSE tried to save a few €100,000 by being tight in in hiring contact tracing staff and that ends up costing the country a few €Billion.

I suppose the Billions don't go on their budget so the big wigs of the HSE must think they're great at managing their budgets.

But all you have to say is you are going shopping. Have a few bags in the boot. The Gardaí will not check.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?
