There is 100000000% a person leaking stuff from
NPHET. Look at the size of the committee ffs, of course there is.

Or it could be the obvious

There has to be, it makes no logical sense for the government to leak these recommendations.

Look at the size of government..

Good point, I'd like to see him taking the PUP in solidarity those he so steadfastly represents. People forget Leo the leak is above all else a man of the people.

You can be guaranteed that if you put the top levels of the HSE, Civil service and members of the Government on the PUP for the duration of a Level 5 lockdown then we'd be back to Level 2 in no time..

Is that person also leaking the Cabinet decisions, before Cabinet sits?

The point is that only overall data will tell you whether schools are a big issue or not.

Our overall data tells us pubs are the safest indoor space in the country.

    But they are closed.

There’s literally ~40 people on NPHET, if you think that none of them are leaking stuff then you’re delusional

just disgraceful. How many weeks do the rest of us have to stay inside until the madness of schools open unravels

Melbourne's Lockdown seems to have worked as Victoria only recorded 1 case yesterday.

How did they deal with all the Businesses closed etc ?

Level 7 or whatever. Their is a great amount of denial of the difficulty of containing this virus. There simply is no solution at the moment, other than various levels of restrictions.

People saying the followed the guidelines in the spring, so why are we back here, or, we would following guidelines if we were shown where it will lead, etc, etc, etc are being utterly unrealistic, and betray either a lack of understanding of the problem, or are politicians simply irresponsibly playing a game of opposition. People need to face up to the reality that increaseing restriction are the only weapon in hand at the moment. The disruption will be great. The economic hit will be great. But stamping the collective foot and saying we wont stand for that is just childishness - the virus is not going to listen.

Not the government collectively of course, but what if someone on that 'side' wants to bounce the government into rejecting a move to level 5 by releasing that info into the public domain before they have had time to 'soften up' the public for it.

    It's Leo.

He leaked part of the fúcking budget before it was announced on Tuesday, that used to be a sacking offence.

    The man can't help himself.

In the level 4 counties are the hotel resident bars closed now or is it a matter of they're not taking anymore bookings bar essential/work related but still honouring existing ones? Or is it business as usual?

Or possibly NPHET trying to freak the **** out of people to make them follow the rules?

Yet nothing came out about the latest letter until it had been sent to the government, amazing coincidence really.

You're aware of delayed exponential growth aren't you? Like, we've already seen it with this virus.

You can look at the NPHET report and models and you'll see we have gotten to where they expected we would.

It may come as a surprise to you but Nphet's role is to advise government , that's it . They are not in a position to rule by decree. The government has to balance the advice against multiple factors. As for leaks , Nphet were engaging with the media before the restrictions for Dublin were advised to government. That is not the way to behave. It does division.

I have been arguing in favour of a new structure to replace NPHET with full time experts within D/Taoiseach but it seems that NPHET and Dr. Tony have cult status. They are believing their own press. In WW1 they would have been tried for treason.

Yesterday when RTE reported that the NPHET letter contained a recommendation of Level 5 for 6 weeks, it referenced "Government sources".

Ok so show me a country (don't say New Zealand) where compliance is working..

All European countries (barring Sweden) are following the same path no matter what they have done, did do or are doing right now.

I agree. I am not saying Ireland is unique. The world has covid fatigue.

NPHET is doing a terrific job. Shooting the messenger will not solve the problem of the virus. The process works. Because the country is now waking up to the reality that it is facing a very unpleasant vista of the next 6-8 months at least, is not a reason to jettison its best informed people on the matter. It is reminiscent of a Brexit comment about having had enough of 'experts' because their analysis didnt reach the conclusions the Brexit faithful wish to hear.

We can only go on the data available, and we do know that 2-3 weeks after schools closed is when infections and deaths really started to escalate badly.

5-6 weeks after opening them our public health team are recommending Level 5 restrictions.

    Am I doing it right?

It's not in NPHET's interest to be leaking stuff to the press.

I lost friends to suicide during the last crash. Strange thing is none of those I knew were raised form the grave when the economy bounced back.

Sorry to hear. A lot of us did

That doesn’t change that if our hospitals gets overran in the winter, with our usual issues and this virus, then a lot of people who would otherwise receive care would die

If ‘closing the economy’ for a few weeks means that we can keep hospitals and ICUs functioning then ya it’s a necessary measure for the greater good of all of us

    Lockdowns are the only weapon?

Guess the HSE shouldn't keep trying to increase ICU capacity, or use hotels etc. to isolate those with less severe symptoms which don't require full time hospitalisations?
People followed the guidelines yes, and now the "second wave" of positive cases are here, which goes to prove you can't eradicate a highly contagious virus, only have the free fast testing, tracing, protection of vulnerable and enough capacity to deal with the serious cases...

Wife’s asthma playing up the last few days. Got cough yesterday lunch time, and rang the doc who gave her steroid and antibiotic straight away, but also scheduled test, which will be at 2:30. Heading off to the test centre in 20minutes.

Usually the doc waits till she is much worse before prescribing the steroids, but it has cleared it up straight away with the early intervention this time, so getting test with no symptoms remaining
