Does anyone one of they have defined your designated region any better then by “ county” - bit painful for those of us living in the edge of two counties?

Wouldn't worry too much. AGS are not getting the same powers as they had earlier in the year so the main result of the checkpoints will be to cause traffic tailbacks and annoyed Gardai standing in the cold. They can't stop you travelling.

Worth noting too that AGS didn't want those powers again anyway.

What a waste of Garda resources to have checkpoints set up to "advise" people. You'd swear we have nothing better for them to do in this country.

It'll be great craic when I'm next stopped and the Guard can advise me not to leave the county and I can advise him I'll be going about my business.

Yep to be fair, I do feel for the AGS members who'll be expected to stand out in the worsening weather manning pointless checkpoints - although, from looking at their Twitter feed they're finding loads of other issues at these checkpoints (chancers with tax out for years, no license/disqualified, drug driving etc) so it's not a complete waste of time.

You would save 1 80 year old life over 100000 jobs? I am speechless! Even more so that 5 people so far have thanked that post.

That really sums up the lack of economic understanding from the pro restrictions.

I suppose you’d gladly put the majority of the country out of work to save 10 lives?

There wouldn’t be any money left to pay welfare, pensions or fund essential services and the country would collapse but at least we saved a few lives. Albeit causing a lot more harm in the process....

Without a strong economy, I can assure you that life expectancy wouldn’t remain at 82 for very long.
At least people dying younger would solve our Covid problem though.

To understand that takes a bit of nuanced thinking that a lot of the pro-lockdown crowd don't have the intellect to manage.

Far easier to sit at home watching Netflix and eating Doritos and tell yourself you're saving a granny.

AGS don't want or believe in this nonsense anymore either. There isn't going to be a repeat of last Spring/summers shennanigans. I think they are worried about the kickback and damage to the public relationship that was done previously- we've always had a community/collaborative police force here that has broadly worked, unlike say in France.

McEntee was there for a wet day in Citibank

    Martin was a teacher
Simon Harris no experience in working
    Leo Public Service as Doc

    Coveney Farm Manager !!

    Norma Foley Teacher

Yeah, you're not convincing me that they're all ex public servants and I really do believe Varadkar has medical experience.
Now if i go through the back bench how many will we find? Our last 3 leaders were Public Servants!!!!

Go for it, I'm pretty busy here. Get back to me with percentages and back it all up with details of where they worked!!!! Edit.. forgot the smiley face, I'm kidding.

The majority will follow advice and I think we should comply as what could happen down the road is far more restrictive. Balancing the economy and public health will require a good level of compliance.

    Here are two stories

Gardaí to put up 132 checkpoints across the country to ensure compliance with Level 3 lockdown guidelines

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/gardai-to-put-up-132-checkpoints-across-the-country-to-ensure-compliance-with-level-3-lockdown-guidelines-39594074.html

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil offers to pay full wages of man inside Gunnersaurus costume to save his job

1 is as meaningful as the other.

I once got a bollicking off a French cop for slowly freewheeling along a pedestrian street one day on my bike. Was a tone that I thought maybe ought to be reserved for somebody who threatened a Charlie Hebdo cartoonist. He took it as some sort of personal offence that I didn't see the tiny no-bike sign.

A garda would be more "Hey mate no cycling please - pedestrian street". Jobs a good 'un.

Fintan, did you know that under level 5, we would be told to stay at home and only leave your house to exercise within 5km?

NPHET are out of their minds thats for sure.

I’ve seen a guard handing out fines to people for cycling on a pedestrian street so you might want to reevaluate that.

I'm genuinely saddened to read that.

A lovely young man I know was diagnosed with cancer earlier in the lockdown. It's just gotten worse and worse for him since then, and the latest prognosis is terminal.

Nothing left to do really but take his wife and kids to Centre Parcs for some lasting good memories.

That won't be happening now. :(

And this is why we will be at level 5 most likely before the month is out. Instead of making sure you can break the guidelines without getting fined etc why not just try to abide by them and thus help to stop the spread of the virus.

There is a serious mental block when it comes to the anti restrictions crowd, they keep breaking restrictions, restrictions get stricter to combat non compliance and they complain but keep breaking them so restrictions have to get stricter again and so on. I don’t know if it’s stupidity, ignorance or just pure badness.

Nox you dont have to describe your relations with Gardai. ;)

on a more serious note, average number of deaths with covid since July is less than 1 person a day, do we really need March lockdown? To prevent something that hasnt happened and doesnt look to be happening?

I know you are gonna post deaths will catch up. I read that rubbish back 1st week of Sept...

Government raids €1.5bn rainy day fund for Budget 2021
Minister Donohoe says conditions of fund have been met by Covid crisis

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/government-raids-1-5bn-rainy-day-fund-for-budget-2021-1.4373653?mode=sample&auth-failed=1&pw-origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishtimes.com%2Fbusiness%2Feconomy%2Fgovernment-raids-1-5bn-rainy-day-fund-for-budget-2021-1.4373653

This suggests to me that there is little appetite to borrow anymore. Fintan brace yourself, USC 2.0 coming in April. But dont worry it will be temporary

Gotta love all the fake dilemmas people are faced with - lockdown now or lockdown later, level five now or level five later etc. etc.
I know it gave your lives some much needed meaning but the pandemic is over.

No, you mustn't. You are requested but not required to.

Journal idiots commenting "now we had a window to go into full lockdown to bring cases down and then open up a little bit for Xmas"

"but govt blew it, we had our chance now to lower the cases"

5 minutes later in the bulletin the discussion is about the Gardai having no additional enforcement powers.

Does no one edit this programme? No wonder people are confused if this is their primary source for "official" news as it would be for particularly a lot of older people
