That's why I noted on the top of the post that they did not employ more staff but reallocated them. There is an interview with the guy in charge talking to the royal college of surgeons covid response team I can post later if you like. We need to stop finding excuses just do things. Not including you in that beacase asking questions always the right thing.

And if we need more ICU beds they'll be reallocating staff. They are already asking nurses to volunteer for ICU. What this would mean, of course, is other procedures and treatments being cancelled.

Interesting podcast last night Soeckle , thanks .
Reinforces what I have been saying all along .
Staff will be taken from areas like theatre and recovery to staff ICU beds if necessary , but the down shot of this is a reduction in general medical and elective surgery .
There are, simply put , as I and other in the area have said , not enough specially trained and experienced nurses to run extra ICU beds .
Nurses from other areas will have to work supervised for quite a while to be able to perform with any level of autonomy, and in situations like this there is little time to train or supervise .
Last year when I said this on the Nurses strike thread that specialist nurses were leaving Ireland to work in Australia , UAE and Canada because they were not adequately paid for their qualifications and experience , I was told by some who are shouting on this thread for " more beds , more ICU beds , now ! " that there were enough nurses in Ireland , and that they were better paid than anywhere else .
These nurses some of whom tried to come back initially when the crisis began should be offered flights home , and re registration in Ireland asap along with a compensatory bonus for coming home to help in what is, after all , a national emergency.
Present re registration is taking at least 3 months btw , which is ridiculous as most of the qualifications are standardised internationally and have been for years .

I’m sorry if this is too simple a question, but how many nurses and docs does it take to staff an icu bed? (This isn’t the start of a joke btw)

I don't get who would be doing it so. Donnelly?

Varadkar on Clare Byrne apparently https://twitter.com/PTHosford/status/1313177211558662147

Donnelly, Ryan and Donohue. They must have pulled the short straw. While Varadkar is on tv and Martin is nowhere to be seen. Some leadership

I'm actually quite surprised with how well the Donald has coped with COVID. I was convinced he'd be dead, to be honest. Meets all the criteria.
That's if he actually had it though, of course.

If they are afriad public Hospitals wont cope with a peak in cases, why not make a plan for private Hospitals to help their collegues with capacity, instead of blanket restrictions

Because they went out of the traps too soon last spring and spent all that money and got 0 use or value out of the private hospitals. I don’t think we can afford to do that again

Can anyone recall how many covid patients were in ICU during the spring peak? TIA.
I think 166 was the peak number of patients in ICU with confirmed Covid (mid April).

You can clearly see how it has spread to the older at risk cohort as predicted.
You can start to understand the dramatic recommendation if hospitalisation trend continues.

We pay plenty in tax in comparison to most countries. Throwing more money at the problem isnt the solution. We spend plenty on the HSE as it is

Should be spending more to keep doctors and nurses and less on HSE clipboard people.

I’m not sure if it’s because NPHET want to dictate all policy during this emergency or if the government want to hide behind them

NPHET don't dictate policy, they take their remit from the government.

The remit is, which Tony reminded us of again this evening.
Our core priorities have to be protected. We must work together to keep our non-COVID health services open, keep our children in education and protect the lives of the most vulnerable to this disease

If the core priorities have changed, then NPHET need to be given a new remit and the public need to be told what it is.

Are schools and the health service now less of a priority?

Because we can't have it all.

It’s alright for some comes to mind when Donald Trump tweets ‘Don’t be afraid of Covid’. He got treatments and a level of medical care that very very few will get.

Nonsense, if you are admitted to an Irish hospital you will get an excellent level of care.

He had his results quicker than most would have been able to ring their gp, dosed with steroids etc and he had a great chance. Survival rates are up as the doctors have learned what works to treat it.

He’s clearly asymptomatic or very mild symptoms, so no special treatment required.

HDU is 1 nurse per 2 patients, ICU is 1:1 nursing

According to your heatmap, the numbers over 65 are decreasing the last few weeks.

Ah, don't fall for that old guff. The man is reasonably healthy. He doesn't fall into the category of likely to die.
