I do not know if people were watching the GAA. there was fans at the game. I am guessing they follow the NI laws. Loads of spaces but all the people were in 2 or 3 places with no space between them

I fear for Ryan and his colleagues mental health when they fade into obscurity again. The attention they are currently recieving surely must validate the years they spent in acedemic pursuits but when the attention slips away how will they cope.

Yes, because people spend their lives studying viruses on the off chance that there's a pandemic and they get some air time. Honestly you're absolutely fcuked in the head if you think that's actually reality. I hope you're having a few cans.

It's not what they set out to do in their careers but the attention must be flattering for some no?

He also seems to only be giving advice from a bookish theoretical point of view (in my opinion) there is no empathy, no common sense, no concessions. Its 100 percent zero covid end goal tunnel vision.

Its like a fireman putting out the fire in your house and then going around ireland collecting up all the matches and lighters so no fire can ever be started again. An admirable pursuit but completely unrealistic and at odds with how most of us live our lives.

I think he forgets some of us are out of work and we kinda need to get back to that because ill blow my brains out sooner than ill catch this virus if this keeps up.

that's why i'm suggesting that if someone is suffering from anxiety or feel they will do so because of the reporting of the daily figures, they should perhapse avoid listening to the reports on them.
the reports don't need to be headline news no but i assume that channels have something to show that there is enough interest for them to be so hence they are the main headline.
things are going well indeed and we are more or less open now which is what we all want.

I do not know. You talk about protecting vulnerable yet suggesting that if they feel vulnerable they should protect themselves and avoid watching news. Covid is pretty much main point of every news so there really is no other way than to tell them to stop watching news completely.
Would not be easier to let people obsessed with numbers to go and check them on some designated website instead of broadcasting them everywhere with no chance to hide from this doom and fear fest?

People who understand numbers already know that this is just hyping up fear aimed particularly at vulnerable people.

31,134 people died in Ireland last year - that make it 85 people a day. Out of which one third - about 28 people a day die from cancer.
By 2020 which is right now - it was predicted that 1 in 2 people will develop cancer during their lifetime. Every year we have an average of 43k of new cancer cases diagnosed. That is 117 cases a day of what is for the most part a death sentence yet 100 covid cases a day are presented as a end of the world? Seriously? Even if there would be 10x more it is pretty much negligible as absolute majority of them are non symptomatic and will not result in any health damage despite what some people here are trying to suggest.

    Numbers game to sustain narrative.

    Exactly.

And I've repeated before, the vast majority of the population haven't a clue it seems, of the normal death rate in Ireland.

If they did, they would demand a lockdown every influenza season.

his job is to advise based on the information, nothing more and nothing less.
it's on the government to decide whatever concessions should be in place if any after that.
he can't give any concessions on advise or information, he can only pass on the information.

some people don't have time to be checking websites so therefore reporting the figures for their own interest is important and that is what news is there to do, inform.
there is no fear fest or hyping up fear
who are these people who understand the numbers that know that the reporting of the figures is hyping up fear? the only ones i know about are those who believe the figures should be changed from daily to weekly, which is fine but daily ones are more informative.
covid is a very contagious virus that if left unchecked can spread like wild fire, comparing it to cancer does nothing for your argument.
nobody is suggesting anything about how many will end up with health damage due to covid, we do know that some people who were healthy before covid and who caught it have had after effects dispite recovery. that cannot simply be dismissed, i'm afraid.
numbers game to inform and educate.

His job is as a neuroscientist in TCD. Im open to correction but he not under the employ of NPHET or the government in any covid related capacity.

It hasn't stopped him mouthing out of him on Eamon Dunphys show 3 times a week and then grandstanding on the telly too. He's also soap boxing on twitter solely on this topic.

Keep your assumptions to yourself. So what does it explain? The main reason i use facebook is to interact with family abroad. What’s up, did you get dumped on Facebook at some stage?

Oh and I thought that you were talking about how we should do everything to protect vulnerable. So not exposing them to numbers which may cause unnecessary anxiety is due to convenience for someone who does not have time to find some information himself...
This wildfire argument is complete nonsense. Sweden or Japan and many other countries are example. Even India which is crammed with people majority of which do not have access to any PPE whatsoever is faring only about 3x worse than us. There goes your wildfire.

Social media is a new phenomenon but all the emerging evidence from studies done by psychologists in recent years suggests that it has an overall negative affect on mental wellbeing. Totally off topic for this thread though.

For some people this covid situation works as some religion with their saints, books and all. Everybody who somehow differ from their view is heretic who endanger their life.

The cold and flu are also very contagious but I don't think you are going to suggest comparing this disease to that now?

You are missing the point the poster is trying to make completely, he is trying to add context to what the risks are.

In regards to the media, I will give one example - Prime time a few nights ago we had a day when there was over 200 cases, it also happened to be the 10th day in a row of no reported deaths.
The host on prime time started banging on about the cases and kept asking if we need to tighten restrictions because of it, yet he barely mentioned the good news about 10 days with no deaths and the fact hospitalizations and ICU figures were staying low.
Now yes they were reporting on the figures but the tone was again very negative as has been from the media for months now.

not at all as those countries are not proof against our approach.

cold and flue unchecked is nothing near as contagious as unchecked covid, from anything i understand.
the prime time program you talk about is not an example of any sort of mongering, simply investigating and asking questions as is generally it's aim.
the media tone is neither negative or positive and that's how it should be, report the facts and information and annalize is all that is required, and that is being done.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.
