This is something I've been meaning to a so in here for the last week. What are our testing levels at now?

Were they ramped up over the last 2 weeks?
There are serial cycles of testing now in care homes, food and meat plants and other areas. Think Reid said they want to do 50,000 tests in the food industries and 15000 or so in care homes.

    Right so.

But what have the testing levels actually been at?

That sort of "intention to test" is the exact thing we were castigating the UK for back in June and July.

There were days of 10K and one of 12K I believe but mostly they've been in the 4-7K a day for a while. It's not an intention, they've been doing it weekly in care homes since June and they started in meat plants a few weeks ago.

It's good to have cases below 50. Feels like the first time it's been that way in a while tbh.

Exactly. It is the young people that will pay the ultimate price for this disease. Make no mistake about that. They will be left to pick up the pieces financially and societally ...
    .
I don't see how you figure this. I may be 50 but I will be working until I'm 68 at least, and possibly longer. I am still part of society, too, (unless you only consider those who like to dance in the streets or go to bars and nightclubs weekly as part of society).

If anything, those in their youth now will probably only be starting to grow up and settle down in 10-15 years time (if this thread is anything to go by), by which time it will be the people already in their 30s, 40s and 50s, even 60s now who will have spent the intervening years picking up the pieces for this.
.. and have already made unbelievable sacrifices to their education, careers and freedoms.
    .

Six months missed out of education, three of which the schools / colleges were closed for. 1 year of travel opportunities missed. Careers barely started? If even. Hardly and unbelievable sacrifice. Total exaggeration.

The behaviour last night in Killarney was very disheartening to see. I am high risk and live with someone who is very high risk. I already lost my mother to covid in April.

I have spent the last almost six months working from home, shopping online exclusively (which is not cheap) and trying to minimise any trips I make out to essential trips only. Basically I've been putting in every effort I can to stay healthy in that time. Its not easy. It does take self-discipline. I am craving a day out to just browse around my favourite shops so badly, but I remind myself I am doing this because I don't want to risk becoming infected, or transmitting the virus to anyone else if i did become infected.

But when you are putting in so much effort and then see so many carelessly ignoring the basic things asked of them, and the likes of the behaviour in Killarney last night or in Berlin last weekend, you can't help but get angry and upset.

There is no way we are "all in this together". There can be no easing of restrictions for me, I can't risk dropping my guard while other people are being idiots and not playing their part. And the sad thing is, it is possible to socialise without being an asshole.

This is not about being a "killjoy" though no doubt that is what I will be accused of being. If everyone played their part, it would be safer for ALL, including those of us who are high risk, to return to something closer to the normality we had before. Because that is ultimately what we want too. I increasingly feel invisible and that the risk to my life is unimportant to those outside my four walls.

It was working. We had cases down to less then 10 per day at one point, then it all went to hell. And now winter is coming and cases are over a hundred a day again even before the schools go back. I'm starting to despair that this will never be over.

Very sorry for your loss and your ongoing health issues through no fault of yourself. But it has to be also recognised that many at risk people who are lecturing the youth on their behaviour might also look to themselves for their own predicament. How many find themselves with serious health issues through years of smoking, heavy drinking, bad diet etc, leading to obesity ,asthma diabetes, heart disease.

They are not asked to not socialise. They are asked not to meet or gather in large crowds. There's nothing wrong with a small group of them like 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 of them meeting up together. The problem occurs where a large group of them gathers together. Do they realistically know everybody in the gathering and their whereabouts and movements over the past 14 days? They don't and that's a risk for an exposure and putting others at risk.

A little bit of perspective about those scenes in Kerry- that video doing the rounds was not one group of people flouting the rules- chances are it was lots of small groups being emptied onto the streets, a few people start mucking about dancing on a ‘phone box’, a few more join in, high spirits, people having a laugh.....phones come out...... Deployed to social media..... queue the now weekly outrage of pearl clutchers.
To expect everyone to leave pubs like they are leaving mass is too much to expect.

There are millions of young people in this country. You need to take sometime and think about all the millions that aren't doing what you are describing.

Do you judge all groups in society based on isolated incidents??

As are the vast majority of young people today, but I can understand the few who are feeling increasingly frustrated and blow off a bit of steam by engaging in the behavior we have seen.

It is very reminiscent of drunken Brits abroad

“Wishful thinking just doesn’t help. And I think that’s been a big part of the issue, a notion in some states in particular, that somehow we can be different from all the other experiences with this virus and other viruses and we can just hope that it won’t spread when we have high levels of contact.”

Very informative, above quote applies to a few in here tbh. Don't want to antagonize anyone but important to remember that scientists like the one mentioned are educating themselves for years for situations like this. Its important we listen to them even if the information they provideisint want we want to hear

Good case number today, compared to the past few weeks. Lowest Sunday figure since July. Hopefully a sign!

There are millions of young people in this country. You need to take sometime and think about all the millions that aren't doing what you are describing.

Do you judge all groups in society based on isolated incidents??

I am not judging anyone by their age. I am judging them by their behaviour.

These are not isolated incidents by any stretch of the imagination. Its going on everywhere, in every county. Non compliance is now so commonplace that they were considering trying to give the Gardai powers to go into private homes to break up house parties.

I judge anyone who is non-compliant in the midst of a global pandemic equally.

    ****wits, all.

I never smoked and have asthma since childhood but never mind as long as the young get their alcohol and drug binges

You very well know i was referring to conditions brought on by lifestyle choices.

What are the theories explaining the apparent relative (compared to cases) fewer hospitalizations these past few weeks?

    Is this being mirrored internationally?

Is it just that more younger people are catching this ,so that it is just a matter of time before hospitalizations go up again as the older population gets sick ?

Is there any evidence that the disease is changing?
