Ha, once you're turfed out they couldn't give a **** if your knocked down/fall into a river/mugged etc

And trying to claim they wouldn't serve you too much drink now too.

Lets face it there'd be no money in pubs if we stuck to the health guidelines on alcohol consumption!

You'd swear they were health clubs the way they talk about them on the radio!

See? This poster has been to the pub twice already this week.

If you want a pint, go have one.

You must surely know how obtuse this is

Read the thread title and come back when you’ve a proper argument beyond “the pubs are open”...

Every pub in the land has the opportunity to open today if they wish to.

If they don't wish to, punters will just go to the ones that are.

Another publican on Pat Kenny, Newstalk now.

Calling for Off-licences to be closed and pubs open as they look after customers.

Trying to make out there's thousands of house parties going on all over the place.

Says people buy slabs of beer with 24 drinks in them but they'd never drink 24 in a pub.

Really a terrible argument and turns me off publicans.

That the VFI rep? He absolutely did not call for off licences to be closed

ffa can we nail this lie once and for all, THE pubs are not open, some are. There are 5 in my town, none are open, one is operating on the sly but its not one i frequent so i can hardly rock up now

But why have they not taken up the option of opening like the rest of them are?

Because they don't have the ability, whether physically or economically, to provide food.

Are you just trying to annoy people?

Oh they certainly do. There are myriad options available to them. Options that many many other establishments have taken up.

Some don't have the space to make it financially viable.

I can think of a dozen pubs off the top of my head that have neither a physical kitchen onsite, nor a takeaway within a 3 mile radius. How exactly do they open up? There's only so many chip vans for hire in the country

But wait, is this down to food or the social distance rules? What does food have to do with space?

You need space to be able to prepare food.

I don't know why pubs aren't using takeaways, pizza places and the likes. Assume they are allowed to do that?

They are indeed allowed to do that. And many many are.

On the pubs can open if they just do X thing it really isn't that simple. I worked in a little local pub for about 5 years and am still close with staff and owners there and they have a kitchen, they often do cocktail sausages and goujons for free on big nights (they don't sell food) but they can't open because their locals want to come in for a few hours, sit at the bar and have a few pints and the craic. If they opened tomorrow as a restaurant with the time limits and table service restrictions they would be empty. Hell, if the demand was there for a sit down restaurant in the area there would be one.

So yes they can open as a restaurant probably without much tweaks but if that isn't what the people in the area want then that won't help.

So what do the pubs want the government to do in a case were their customers are not interested in a premises following social distancing guidelines/table service / table cleaning etc, even if the food part is taken away.

So Government say they can open, without food - every other restriction (table service, booking, time limits) would apply. They either stay closed or aren't viable or have no intention of sticking with the restrictions?

This is the case for many pubs, especially in rural settings. People just want a couple of pints, and a chat for a while. They don't want food. It's like going into a butcher shop and being told 'listen I can sell you a few chops but you're going to have to order 3 pairs of socks along with them' 🙄.

I 100% agree, however, if they are allowed open, it will be all the same restrictions bar needing food. Which is still not going to be enough. People want what they had in March, that ain't happening now, in September or October.

You think a few 7-ups are gonna cover the minimum 3 staff, electricity, heating, insurance etc??

I don’t think people want what they had in March because we know its not currently possible. Everyone I think knows what it'll be like for the next while and accepts the current measures in restaurants. Apply them to pubs without food and I dont see how people could complain. I can then go in and sit down with my few mates and have a couple of pints without food, don’t see what there is to complain about there.

There's more to it than the food I think.

The profit margin on those 7ups is much higher than the margin on the pints!

10 times as much 7up can be bought in the newsagent next door for half the price.
