    Didi you read the list?

The list of idiots that attended the function? Yes I did indeed.

What has that got to do with a police state? I'm not following you here. How does it clearly illustrate we do?

Replace 'breaking' with 'making' and then you know how I feel since May more or less.

Sorry I'm really now following you, We thankfully don't live under a communist or dictatorship regime. We have elected the current government.

I understand the current government might not be your prefered party but that is democracy in action.

To throw out phrases like police state and positions of power they hold over us is in my opinion complete nonsense.

If any other party was currently running government the situation would be similar. They are following public health guidance which again in my opinion is the correct approach.

My choice is none that are available .

I didnt say we lived in a police state read my post again. What i said again was those that make the rules and have the power to enforce them are not following the same rules.

So you have no problem with what went on recently and public health guidance was being followed and it would be the same regardless of who was in government?

You did say "positions of power they hold over us" I don't understand what you mean by that phrase.

You will not see me defend what went on I thought my opinion was clear. You ignored the point I was trying to make.

Another party in Government would have hopefully followed public health advice similar to what we have now.

I simply answered the question you asked about a police state.

Another party in Government would have hopefully followed public health advice similar to what we have now

Yes they may have or they may have had a different approach this we dont know.

You threw out a line about "when the position of power they have is over us all" which I asked you to clarify.

Thats a long list but a bit of accountability would be a good start. All I see is career politicians with no long term plan at all.

I assume you were replying to me there. I understand the frustration I don't think there is a single person here tonight happy with politicians.

Was just trying to understand when you said you had no choice in the last election who would you have liked to see on the ballot paper?

None really offered anything but more of the same. This is probably not the right thread for it.

I think it was yourself that brought politics into the thread claiming the people in positions of power hold power over us. That's why I asked for an explanation and alternative.

I also asked another poster why they think we live in a police state but no answer either.

Soundbites are cheap that's why platforms like Twitter do so well.

No you asked me to when I provided a take on it.

Your opinion your entitled to it remember we dont live in a police state if we did your opinion wouldnt matter and neither would mine.

I told you read the list of people

You intervened between me and another poster with your own opinion which I am still awaiting a reply.

I offered my take am i not allowed too?

He offered his take and perfectly entitled too. What you seem to be missing in all of this is when powers of the state are given excessive control and dont obey their own rules it a slippery slide to worse. You may agree or may not but history tells a different story.

    You decide.

I did and I dont see how people like Jerry Buttimer are controlling the people that's why I asked you to explain the comment.

Of course you are this is the whole point of the site and what keeps it going. It can be used by some posters though to ignore a direct point and disengage with the debate where here is a prime example.

I dont agree he offered his take thats the issue. He threw out a one liner statement that we live in a police state with nothing to back it up and once questioned by another poster hid. That's all I was getting at.

Would be happy to discuss the rest of that statement about excessive control etc. if we can put the rest of this aside.

Fully agree it's more important now than ever.

We need to take politics out of this debate thought in relation to the current situation. If the Monster Raving Loony Party or Lord Buckethead were elected to Government in the UK I think they would still follow the public health expert advice.

This thread was initially useful to discuss restrictions and relaxation of them but jumped the shark where people started making statements about a police state etc. thats my only issue.

Understandable. I think restrictions from the evidence available are excessive.

Been saying all week that the tide is turning. The protests today are visible evidence of that.

I don’t necessarily 100% agree with the protests and the people running it. But it’s inevitable. And more support will grow from here on.

Another lockdown is pointless now. It won’t be obeyed.

The will of the people is gone.
This current government have failed miserably.

New strategies are needed that will actually allow us to LIVE with the virus, not just survive. Accepting a certain level of cases and deaths is part of that.

That's fair and again not many would disagree with that statement.

Restrictions are a fairly blunt tool but I can also see why Government use them. If they don't broadly follow NPHET advice the backlash if something went wrong would be enormous.

Here are my previous views for what it's worth.

"Hospital numbers of Covid patients is currently low which is great news and allows the health service to treat day to day patients. This is very important as I hope you can agree. If Covid hospitaliasions increase it limits the capacity of the healthcare service.

Onto the economy I think it's a delicate risk based balancing act on what to open and personally feel the current balance is about right.

Would genuinely like your opinion on what restrictions you would lift tomorrow to benefit the economy. My own would be to allow regular pubs to open with table service and reduced numbers or promotion of pubs teaming up with restaurants to provide food and benefit two businesses."

Yes it would if covid was a much more serious threat but as time has proven its not as bad as we all thought it would be from early this year.

What we have seen recently is it didn't happen thats not to say you were wrong it just means we now know a bit more having been living with it for the summer. What is also happening now is other much more important medical procedures are building up due to the perceived emergency of covid.
Onto the economy I think it's a delicate risk based balancing act on what to open and personally feel the current balance is about right.

Disagree the economy is in for big trouble.
Would genuinely like your opinion on what restrictions you would lift tomorrow to benefit the economy. My own would be to allow regular pubs to open with table service and reduced numbers or promotion of pubs teaming up with restaurants to provide food and benefit two businesses."

Focus all effort on those most at risk
Remove manadatory restrictions and let people decide from themselves.
