For many people it is not even noticeable, but "mild" means everything short of hospitalisation which is a pretty serious range. It's probably more accurate to say something like 50% mild, 40% moderate, 10% severe. "Moderate" is like a bad flu, and anyone who has had a flu will know what I mean.

Agree with that. It's all about definitions I guess. Most medical people would consider a disease mild if you only experienced mild to moderate symptoms.

Yeah I think the description I heard before was mild/moderate is basically anything up to not needing to be ventilated.

The other side of it is it's probably too early to tell long term effects as it hasn't even been around a year yet. Could be potential organ damage to lungs, brain and heart which could affect quality of life. The bottom line is prevention is the best cure of course.

I didn't say our cases are low, I'm saying that, based on the stats we have, the virus is not very harmful. You have absolutely no basis for saying that the virus would have a worse hospitalisation and death rate if more people got infected.

EDIT: I found the official table with the actual hospitalisation and death rate split between the age groups - see p9 https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/coronavirus/novelcoronavirus/casesinireland/epidemiologyofcovid-19inireland/COVID-19_Daily_epidemiology_report_v0.1_website.pdf

    Case fatality rate in Ireland based on number of notified cases (i.e. actual positive tests) as a % of the total cases;

    0-14 years 0%
    15-24 years 0.05%
    25-34 years 0.11%
    35-44 years 0.26%
    45-54 years 0.52%
    55-64 years 2.04%
    65-74 years 12.3%
    75-84 years 22.31%
    85+ years 27.69%

All the while noting that the median age of those infected was 48 so it wasn't just older people that got infected.

how can you say the virus is "not very harmful" given the stats you just posted unless you are discounting old people for some reason? this attitude is appalling and needs to stop.

Have today's cases not been announced yet ? I was just checking the rte website and there's nothing when at this time there normally is.

I expect we'll get them at the briefing, which is due to start at 6 30.

    Which means it'll be after 6 30.

Thought I heard something about testing of passengers from people from high risk countries on RTE radio 1 news bulletin there. No idea if it's for Ireland or what but guess it might come up in briefing if it's for here. Couldn't see anything on RTE news site about it.

It's not just Vietnam the whole planet is in real trouble now. Difficult Winter ahead for Europe in particular.

Any chance I could get a reply to the above? Not having a dig just genuinely interested to hear your reasoning.

This is ridiculous, you'd think covid was the only thing older people need to worry about. Get over yourself. The data says it is not very harmful, if you want to pull at heart strings for your own emotional sanity then go ahead.

I'm not sure that poster is the full shilling to be honest. They don't seem to understand how anything which might not affect them could be regarded as harmful.

Probably the theory that the virus will transmit more efficiently in the winter and the rise in cases we're already seeing in Europe during the summer months, so there's a fear of a second surge during winter months.

Nobody knows what will happen but the above is being thrown around a fair bit.

You've gone silent since I gave you all the data, I've noticed. Anti-relaxers, flat curvers types thrive on hysteria and don't engage with the data in my experience. They live on their keyboards and are disproportionately represented online compared to the numbers you see out and about on a daily basis, IMHO.
