What is your opinion of the delay of pub openings until August 10th?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,878 ✭✭✭facehugger99

Probably the first time I've agreed with you on this thread but I'm baffled by this as well.

Can't see the harm in the masks though.

    Knew you'd get there eventually.

Wow Míchael Martin and Stephen Donnelly are literally just singing ‘public health advice’ as their strategy for the current crisis. They are not giving me any hope for the coming months, where is the leadership! Stop quoting NPHET and show us how to Govern alongside the public health advice...

That (low) bar was set with Leo and Simon. The only difference seems to be that we're not getting movie quotes

It's a unwarranted response to where we are now and I reckon it'll cause a lot of problems in the next few weeks. Everyone will be out buying masks in the morning (if not already) and like sanitiser it'll be an excuse to gouge people.

Then there'll be the impact on business as people restrict their activity to the minimum I reckon.

The funniest thing is that apparently there will still be a green list from Monday.

So you literally will be allowed go to another country and go on a pub crawl for a week if you want.

But it’s too dangerous to have 1 or 2 in your local.
But we also wish people would staycation!!!

    You couldn’t make it up!

So just hearing about this ridiculous notion to make masks mandatory in shops and indoor locations (offices etc as well then I assume?)... completely unjustified at this stage. I live in a county with 1% of cases, am not and have not been sick and find masks hard to breathe in, hot and unconfortable.

Cases are rising so I would imagine it's a preemptive attempt at limiting the spread as more people are mingling. Wasn't so much an issue previously when most people were locked up.

Hard to believe you are complaining about the inconvenience of a mask. Firstly, you must be wearing the wrong mask. I've those disposable ones and you'd hardly know you were even wearing one. Also you only have to wear it for very brief periods when you're shopping or on public transport. They're not asking you to chop off a limb FFS.

Stephen Donnelly just admitted that 9 of every 10 cases are domestic, and yet they demonised anyone who dared think about leaving on their paid for holidays...how does this make any sense?

Did they not claim less than 2 weeks ago - ‘travel was a big concern re cases’. What hypocrites.

I agreed with the lockdown, but this move makes no sense. By 10th of Aug our cases will.average 40 or so a day.

Pubs won't open before xmas at this rate.

I hope some of the publicans take a class action.

There's no such thing as a class action lawsuit in Ireland.

How can they possibly allow the pubs to open on August 10th?

What will be different on that date that isn't the case now?

How will the schools reopen in September if this is the bar we are setting.

How long are we planning on paying hundreds of thousands of people an emergency payment not to work?

Why the fcuk is no media outlet asking these questions?

We are in very dangerous territory as a country.

Thats fairly pedantic. One can still challenge with support from the rest.

To be fair they have been fukd over this evening. Restocked ready to go and lack of leadership cost them their livelihoods.

There going to be a green list on the 20 th outlining green countries where you may travel without restrictions . If you go to a red list country you will be asked nicely to obey quarantines but they won't enforce it because it's too difficult.

you can attend a pub in the green country but you can't come home and attend a pub .

Theres no point testing travellers but when Michael Martin goes to Brussels he will be tested twice after he returns

    I am not.inspired

That's a good point too. They've probably spent a lot of money clearing lines and old stock and replacing it for the expected busy week ahead and now that stock will gather dust for another month.

From a media point of view investigative journalism is dead.

Investigative journalism is important for democracy.

Waters was one of the last I remember before things went south

Absolutely no difference. Making it up as they go along. What started as a good response to this pandemic has now decended into utter farce, as the goalposts continually shift, as "experts" are fearmongering on the radio with absolutely nothing to back it up.

I hope the publicans realise that nothing will happen to them if they open up anyway on Monday. If your local pub opens then go to it. We can end the stupidity ourselves if we vote with our feet. The extension makes no sense at this stage. The amount of testing we’re doing is massive and the percentage of positives from those tests are under the false positive rate for the pcr test itself. The case numbers will never get any lower. Crazy stuff from a spineless government. We need some investigative journalists quickly to keep them on their toes.

The extra testing will lower the CFR to a level that wont be reported. Just like the median age of death

Micheal Martin on RTE News Now at the moment.

    - Phase 4 delayed
    - face coverings should be worn by all customers and staff in shops unless separated by a screen
    - pubs, bars, hotel bars remain closed until 10th August
    - social visits recommended to be limited to 10 visitors from no more than 4 households
    - public gathering limits extended to 10th August

When are they posting out the facemasks?

I think maybe that it's in the hope that this 3 weeks extra will be enough time to drill it in to some people (particular young people, though I am loath to place all the blame at their door) that this thing has not and will not be going away.

Seeing people wearing face coverings much more often may just help reinforce the point enough to allow some statbilsation of outbreaks. Then at this point (hopefully) it will be possible to open up the pub trade.

Obviously the max number of people of 10 gathering together is unenforceable to a very large extent, but again if the message just gets through to x% of people it will be a case of every little helps.

I get the argument around pubs abroad are fine but not the pubs here, however let's just wait and see exactly is on the green list.

Many EU countries have pretty stringent rules when it comes to pubs. We unfortunately are at the huge disadvantage of not having the weather in general to have the outdoor cafe-bar experience you get elsewhere.

Excluding our nearest neighbours the whole being seated within a bar thing is very normal in Europe. That is not the case here and so many Irish bars are pokey to begin with which makes social distancing hard (when drunk) and also makes many pubs unviable as business propositions in the medium term.
