No shock here with all the talk of second waves from the various media outlets and officials

Theirs evidence of the risk in other countries also.

    No deaths again today. Excellent!

We just need to keep it that way and be a bubble of normality for a while.

I can't think of anything more frustrating than seeing a potential risk of reimporting this for no good reason other than being unwilling to take preventative action.

    wait for tmw

tomorrow... next week... really it takes two weeks to see the impact... ah three weeks really and then we'll see the spike...

Fairly certain this is the first time we've had two days without deaths?

I was just thinking the same. Any day without deaths and only 4 new cases is a good one.

Don't we say that every time there's a bit of drama of people gathering?!

Yep. First it was people having house parties and meeting up in the park. No spike. Then it was the demonstrations across the country for BLM. No spike.

Will will see an increase in cases, especially as foreign travel picks up. But once cases stay below 30 a day we can manage it.

We're not going to get to zero cases a day unless we completely shut off the country from the outside world.

Labs are at less than half capacity.
The 15,000 quoted capacity included the German lab. I don't believe we've sent anything there in a while. Its important to keep all testing in Ireland to keep turnaround times as quick as possible.

Hospital labs are working at their own individual capacity. Trying to get as many batches of samples processed every 24 hours.

Our own Micro dept now have 2 people on call at night instead of one, and more on weekends. That means they're on call more often and there will be less people in during the day to process routine work that is always increasing.

User you've quoted works at the lab in UCD from what I can make out based on previous posts.
Some labs will be at capacity, hospital labs etc, they do have other tests to do apart from covid too.
I work in a hospital lab. But yes. People forget that routine work still continues. Our workload increases about 6% each year.

The testing times have been getting slower despite the fact that the demand has decreased a boat load. No answer for why its so much slower either.
    This is simply not true.

74% of people think there'll be a second wave, and where would they have had their opinion influenced from ? Media constantly talking about it.

There's going to be spikes, we've already seen it in Sligo and Leitrim, get them under control quickly.

    A spike doesn't mean a second wave.

What countries in the EU are having second waves with widespread country wide restrictions??

Testing & tracing, social distancing, lack of large gatherings, improved hand hygiene, mask wearing, people avoiding non essential travel and gatherings, reduced international travel, working from home and general public awareness and compliance with public advice are all going to help to reduce transmission should there be additional case growth.

I would be very hopeful that we'll see increased case numbers over the coming weeks and months but it won't be at the level we saw in March and April. The free for all that went on when this whole craic started is not there this time and we are far more prepared.

From an economic perspective its apples and oranges. Australia's economy is similar to america, more domestically based.

We our a much more open economy. Realistically we cannot afford to cut ourselves off for a prolonged period

Demand has increased significantly in the past two weeks? Do you not know anything about what you're talking about?
    https://www.hse.ie/eng/services/news/newsfeatures/covid19-updates/integrated-information-service-testing-and-contact-tracing-dashboard-6-july-2020.pdf

Eh, I'm talking about the demand in April/May compared to the demand today which is obviously gone down a lot.

It is higher than April/May. We had our first day of 10,000 tests a day last week.

The most coronavirus tests processed by Irish laboratories in one day was 11,504 on April 29th.

I said per day. Yet you say demand has increased significantly? You're answering your own questions.

They've technically had less new cases than Kildare in the past two weeks so maybe not entirely surprising.
