I didnt always agree with Tony Holohan but I can see why he is worried re travel. If we ignore the debate on personal travel yes or no etc. And look at the wider picture very close to home. The UK are considering opening up to 90 countrys with no quareenteen/self isolation! This would be the barndoor wide open to Ireland and make contact tracing a more complex nightmare.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jul/02/uk-to-lift-ban-on-non-essential-travel-to-up-to-90-countries

Regarding the USA. They cannot even control their own citzens leaving even though they say no essential travel abroad and will not let us in.(even if in a deranged moment we fancied it)
There has to be something going on in the background in government circles to delay the decision. I only hope it is not linked to potential medication negioation issues.

It's going to be quite a rude awakening for a lot of people if they discover they've civil legal liability for failing to implement policy, best practice or at least best effort around this. I'm also not sure what the legal ramifications would be for an individual who knowingly put someone at risk.

While nothing's gone to law yet, Ireland's an extremely litigious country, by any comparison.

Would this also apply to people going on Staycations here? What if your hotel was next to a group of Americans in say Galway or Kerry? As there seems to be US and British tourists around. Saw a good few U.K. number plates today...

    That's not good at all.
Low numbers and a rise will do that. It may also be a blip. We have flexibility around this if you remember Philip Nolan for some early briefings and we do have wriggle room above 1.

Very sad to hear about Tony's wife being moved to palitive care, hard to believe he was there nearly every evening updating us and doing his best to keep us safe with that going on in the background, he deserves a medal or two.

The R number hasn't been the most useful metric in this pandemic anyway, with some people being superspreaders and some people not being infectious at all - makes any theoretical modelling very challenging.

Its also a very poor indicator when the number of cases is low... a sudden rise of just a few cases (background fluctuation) can very easily skew it so that it looks absolutely terrible very quickly.

All the best to Tony, his wife and family at this desperate time.

Really heartfelt after your comments about him a couple of days ago.

“Cannot believe they rolled that woman out to give veiled threat to the youth of Ireland. This CMO is getting out of control, he needs to be forced out for a few months. The power is going to his head.”

You got your wish anyway

The lack of empathy from some posters is something else. Going on their previous posts in this thread I can't say it's surprising.

That’s not very fair. No one knew about this until today. And people in positions of authority don’t get a free pass just because they might have a personal issue in the background.

I agree that those comments were a little strong and I wouldn’t have vocalised them in that way. But I agree with the sentiment, which was that he was really substantially overstepping his bounds

I wish him all the best. Wouldn’t wish what he must be going through on my worst enemy. But doesn’t mean I didn’t think that he was out of order with his proclamations

What if every business had taken the same stance, we’d be looking at many more dead.

Their duty in this circumstance which the country and it’s people face is to be a team player, not a selfish entity.

Great to have our national airline not being as selfish when dealing with people who couldn't go on holiday's due to this crisis. It really shows where their interests are.

So he's St Tony now? How was anyone to know?

Given how callous he treated the cervical cancer victims who had botched screenings, and the fact that cancer screening for cervical and other cancers has been off for months now - would anyone have guessed he's living with someone with cancer himself? And we're preaching here about empathy?

Every public figure has a personal life, he is no different.

Do you believe ones personal situation should be used to deflect from one's professional actions?
I feel sympathy for the man and his family but I don't agree his past behaviour should be ignored now in light of wifes illness.

Selfish for trying to stay in business and not have to lay off thousands more people? What about all the SMEs that are open up and down the country, are they selfish too? Pubs? Restaurants? Hotels? Should we just shut down everything and go back to the days when we couldn't even afford shoes on our feet?

The fact you're defending Ryanair says enough about you.

No worries. Let's let them burn to the ground and then see how often you're able to leave the country when they're no longer operating.
Just a few thousand more people to add to the live register, eh?

It’s 100% fair. If one is going to basically accuse him of acting like a tyrant, don’t turn around and make out like he’s a great fella just because you find out his wife’s sick. Own it. He’s done a great job during this pandemic and the ****e some people have been spewing about him on here was out of order.

Are Emma Mhic Mhathúna and Vicky Phelan allowed to say anything about him now? Is cancer only a problem when it happens to his wife, and not to other women because of his botched screening programme?

I maintain he did a terrible job in the crucial first weeks.
He seemed to be asleep at the wheel.

Now it seems he had a valid excuse. I wish him and his family the best, but also hope for a better system in the future.

    ANYWAY

No county data released again today. It was released later in the day yesterday but I'd say it's way too late now.

HSE update should be interesting as there seems to be a big drop in ICU numbers today based on what Tony said.

He must be devastated that he has to give up (momentarily I'm sure) on his conspiracy for a coup - if so many on here were to be believed.

The faux concern of some people this evening when they've been screaming for the government 'to stand up to him' and that 'he's drunk with power' for weeks is quite something.

Surely emojis aren't appropriate now when we're all supposed to be bowing our heads for St Tony?

If every business had the same attitude ? We’d be fûcked. No hall pass for them, no ‘just because’...

Ryanair have strong cash assets, staff getting covid payments, not in danger of not operating, or burning to the ground, not by a long shot. It’s greed and ego.
