That's incredibly sad about Dr Holohan's wife. Life can be very unfair and cruel.

Best wishes to Dr Holohans wife as she fights the big C. Tony will be missed on those press briefings but as ever family first.

Very sorry to hear that Tony Holohan's wife is so unwell. What stress he must be under with Covid and his family issues.

This virus has been reduced to absolutely tiny numbers in 70% of the Republic. I can't see non business owning locals welcoming American tourists like before

It'll be more "what the hell are you doing here?" than "Cead Mile Failte"

Trouble is, by the time non business-owning locals run into Americans on holiday, it's too late. They've gifted us with Covid.

They've got to be stopped before coming here. Could be too late already, doesn't take many people to seed an outbreak. Just one will do it.

Contact your TD for what it's worth and put it to them.

Heartbreaking news about Tony's wife. The poor man, his poor wife, their poor family. My god. As if this wouldn't have been enough of a nightmare period for him, I truly can't imagine what he's been going through dealing with both at once. My heart goes out to him.

His wife has terminal cancer unfortunately... imagine the strain the guy must have been under.

It won’t help his situation but he should be bestowed the highest honor of the state when this ends.

When I look at the UK and the US, I’m really proud to be Irish. They didn’t get everything right but I think Holohan & Varadkar did a solid job in tough circumstances. Given what we now know Tony was also dealing with he deserves even more respect.

All the best to Tony, his wife and family at this desperate time.

If someone decides to go abroad, can their employer legally make them quarantine when they return? As in they have to take 2 weeks off work if they can't work from home?

This doesn't apply to me, I'm just curious.

What he has been going through personally and privately in the background while doing the kind of high pressured, exhausting job shows the extraordinary commitment to public service.

Dr Holohan announced at the end of the briefing he is stepping down from his role as Irish CMO (for the time being) as his wife is terminally ill.

I've been saying this for 2 weeks now and I've contacted my local TD

Us debating it on an internet forum will achieve absolutely nothing as far as Airport restrictions go

Jesus I don't want to come on too strong given the tragic news but it's far far far too early for that sort of talk.

We should be indebted to the man for his best efforts to keep us all safe while dealing with his own difficult personal.issues I wish him and his family all the best.

Leo was right when he said that we as a Country owe a profound debt to Dr. Tony.

Where I work, if you go abroad you have to take a further two weeks of your annual leave.

There was a small uproar from one colleague and everyone else is fine with it.

We all owe a huge amount to Tony. He may be stubborn at times but he has done an awful lot for our country. Terribly sad.

I think we can all wish only the best for Tony and his family at this time.

For him to be doing what he has been, and with what we find out now about his personal life, that can't have been easy at all.

All the best to him and his family.

An employer would have no choice but to do exactly this if they are aware that an employee has been abroad. WFH if possible or, if not possible, then another 2 weeks annual leave or, if that's all used up, then 2 weeks unpaid leave

Mine has been very clear about that. They would be open to all sorts of legal trouble if they knowingly facilitated a member of staff to disobey the quarantine requirement and someone in the office got sick as a result

Just thinking about all the time he has lost in those precious last months to be with his wife and he gave them to Ireland and her people instead. My heart goes out to his family and any others affected the same but who are unknown to us.
Edit; His wife must be one stronge woman aswell.

Hope Ryanair are happy now with the trouble they've been throwing at him.

    Well, that was totally unexpected.

I wish Dr Holohan and his family all the very best.

He's done a superb job from the start guiding the country through this and must have been under all sorts of pressure.
