Never as far as I know

Simon tells us to "finish the job" every day. He's probably chasing a strand of the virus around his back garden as we speak.

I think we need to look at testing people before they leave the airport. Not perfect, but it would allow some kind of return to normality and we do have huge testing capacity now, something like 10,000 tests per day.
But how would that work? Test results still need to be processed - do you hole people up in the airport for hours, or a day, to get the results back?

At this stage it would be relatively easy to become virus free.

But it would mean almost indefinite controls on tourists and travellers here from abroad.

The UK, US, Sweden and Brazil remain very high risk countries and also anyone who travelled through those countries. We'd have to restrict travel from there until a vaccine is widely rolled out, which could take years.

I think we need to look at testing people before they leave the airport. Not perfect, but it would allow some kind of return to normality and we do have huge testing capacity now, something like 10,000 tests per day.

A compromise will be to just test people arriving from those high risk countries?

I dont really see why we would hold up German tourists in Dublin Airport when they are dying to get to temple bar.

A couple of countries are already doing this. Austria can turn around tests in 3 hours. Far better than quarantining for two weeks, and also far easier to police than allowing a potentially infected person out of the airport.

Allowing people to self police their quarantine doesn't work. 1/3rd of air travellers didn't even bother filling out the form and even now that its mandatory, there is still no law to say they have to quarantine. And even if it was enforceable, you'd have to quarantine everyone in the household for 2 weeks to stop it spreading to the community.

That galute Gerry Killeen just on the radio just now talking about us all spending time in ICU with Covid over the next 4 or 5 years.

Some of us take that at face value and merit of a total spoofer enjoying limelight at the present time.

Others, some of which are on this thread, are genuinely vulnerable to such unsubstantiated lies and would be wise to ignore where possible.

Life will return to normal, especially for the benefit of those so young that this is not one bit dangerous too

Strangely, I find myself agreeing with this post.

I'm having a good laugh to myself here at the thought of restaurants asking for proof of address on entry.

Is part of official Irelands tendency to assume no one will take personal responsibility. So instead teams of penpushers who likely have no actual knowledge dream up scenarios in which there is a potential for transmission and seek to implement guidelines to prevent those regardless of how outlandish or unlikely. Simple attainable measures in place to reduce the frequency of contacts and introduce a level of control where distancing is not possible is what we should have. 7 or 8 bullet points max to serve as guidelines - and businesses can then implement plans to show how they are abiding by the spirit of those guidelines within the confines of their own situation, rather than this cover every scenario ****e where the level of control required is unworkable, therefore doomed to failure

Yes he did. A depressing interview which kinda shattered my positivity over the recent days numbers of new cases. He basically said the current course of action would see all of us eventually spend time in ICU some time in the next four or five years. Very dismissive of the potential for the virus burning itself out anytime soon.

That's a load of shíte. What about all those who are asymptomatic? What about all those people who have contracted it but didn't need ICU care? I'm glad that I've never heard of yer man until the last couple of days.

Seeing as the press conferences are now only going to be held on Mondays and Thursdays; when and where will we be notified of daily cases numbers?

Spread has been reduced. The risk and danger of tens of thousands dead has been managed and averted. Mission accomplished..

The mission and objective of the lock down was to manage spike and reduce pressure on the health service to a level that it could deal with. We never had an objective or mission to wipe out the virus. That isn’t possible without a technical solution.

So we are still very much in a situation where we need to manage this.

Anyone who thinks “mission accomplished” doesn’t understand what the mission was in the first place.

That doesn’t mean we can’t go back to relative economic normality. It does however mean a hell of a lot of management of risk of spread.

Throw caution to the wind and we risk being back to where we were in March and completely wasting all the effort of the last few months.

This stuff needs to be sane, sensible and with a balance towards caution. We are only barely a few weeks past the worst of it and nobody really knows if this could come back in a seasonal wave, or ramp up.

The only way we are going to know is by observing what happens and trying to respond quickly this time.

Not everyone. There's a fella posting here who wouldn't enter a shop if he had to wear a mask. He said he'd take his business elsewhere. That would be difficult if it was enforced everywhere in fairness.

This is a terribly sad story, particularly given the family's tragic history but it is annoying that RTE are being told to take advantage of the family's situation in an attempt to emotionally blackmail the general public into blindly following a narrative which is starting to not add up. As such, I would say backlash is a strong word but it is annoying to be patonised like this as a member of the public.

lf i was a small cafe or restaurant owner, I would be incredibly angry at the nonsense that has been indulged in this country. Meanwhile off-licences have been allowed to trade away during the whole 'pandemic' - where were all the fcuking clusters as a result of this???

Can you seriously not distinguish between groups of people congregating around tables in close proximity for a considerable time and a limited number of people popping into an offie for a couple of minutes?

North Carolina auto race draws thousands after dubbing itself a ‘protest’
A North Carolina speedway drew a crowd of more than 2,000 spectators in defiance of the state’s coronavirus restrictions after declaring the race a “protest.” [..]

A sign from management outside the speedway said, “This Event is held in Peaceful Protest of Injustice and Inequality Everywhere.” The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office said it is “evaluating the events.”

Lockdowns averted 3 million deaths in 11 European nations: study

Not a great article because it doesn't give the name of the study or the authors. Was Dr. Ferguson one of the authors? And when can we see the study?

Ridiculous stuff from the national broadcaster. We know people have died. It’s not news and it doesn’t not mean we should roll back on the easing of restrictions.

Edit: Did this family call RTE and complain about the restrictions being lifted or have RTE been calling victims families for comment?

Last I heard Dr Ferguson broke lockdown rules and resigned in shame (which is ironic as he couldnt stop banging the lockdown drum).

Perhaps he is trying to make a comeback with this modelling study portraying himself as Superman?

I've been thinking about what to do as obviously restrictions are to be expected to be fully lifted 29th June with 1m or 1.5m social distancing at 9 new cases per day rate.

Probably going to post in economic/business threads, but read more than post tbh. (i am assuming such forum section exists here) It would be beneficial for my job to keep on top of things all related to Irish economy and businesses so going to combine good with the interesting. :)

Dismal reading about reopening guidelines for hospitality, tourism and retail.

Yes things were sped along by pressure from business, big and small, on government to jump-start reopening of economy, due to low numbers of infections and deaths. And the money spent to sustain current restrictions will soon run out.

Solution? Well, let them open up then - but we'll put such ridiculous guidelines in place that it won't be worth their while continuing to trade, were they to adhere to the reopening guidelines.

But our asses will be covered, and we can't be held accountable for a no-longer viable business *shrug* - not our fault the vastly reduced footfall through your door doesn't cover your lease, insurances, wages, overheads, rates - you're allowed trade aren't you? We've done what we can, no more handouts for you.

IT today talking about the onus being on hotel staff to police an event to ensure social distancing is being adhered to. Do they mean a tap on the shoulder to move apart. Seriously? A teenage part-time event worker now bears responsibility for preventing the spread of Covid-19 in a gathering of grown adults?

Total abdication by authorities for responsibility, as per. I just feel so bad for small businesses thrown a lifeline by early lifting of restrictions only to be shackled by health and safety guidelines thought up by a group of people so far removed from those they are supposed to represent it's soul-crushing.

Okay so prevailing thinking is that gatherings of people indoors is high-risk for resurgences - yes it does seem that for now that is the reality, but Christ, those in charge are paid enough money to come up with a viable solution. Keep them closed and protect them properly in the short-term if the danger is so great in reopening. Or find a compromise so they can trade without making a loss.

Regardless of where you stand on easing of restrictions, this weak, ass-covering reopening is not the solution to rebooting the economy.

Madrid chief warned against refusing hospital aid to care home residents: ‘They’ll die in undignified conditions’
The emails, seen by EL PAÍS, show that a top regional official tried to warn colleagues in the Madrid government that denying hospital treatment to care home residents could result in “serious legal consequences.” The documents also point to the internal differences within the Madrid executive, which is run by the Popular Party (PP) and Ciudadanos (Citizens).

People with serious disabilities but with a good life expectancy could be refused, and we would be committing an act of discrimination with serious legal consequences

Watching the CEO of Failte Ireland on the news just now and I felt for him when the question of the costs of these measures came up and whether they'd be passed on.

He suggested that operators will try to be as competitive as possible but you can see it's just not going to work - especially with the majority of their customers (overseas visitors) not likely to be coming this year.

Unless you're really desperate for a night/weekend away, why would you pay an increased amount of money for a significantly lesser and more inconvenient experience?

I don't blame the hoteliers or Failte Ireland as I said earlier, but this will be the end of many smaller places I reckon.

9 new cases today, 2nd day in a row new cases in single digits.

    Right direction.

Given that there was a 3000 + protest on 1st of June (over 8 days ago) it can be safe to say that there doesnt seem to be a spike in infections (but this can be 100% confirmed up to 6 days from now)
