I have supported quickening up of lifting restrictions from the start. But I have to wonder...is the opening up of lockdown going to be even more depressing than lockdown itself?
Plastic barriers between people, masks, plastic visors, don't spend longer than an hour in someones house, sit 2 metres away, no physical contact, queuing outside every shop, no browsing, still no health services back, I could go on. It's all so...sterile.

I just don't know...am I being too pessimistic. Everyone is getting excited about this but I feel it's going to fall flat on its face in a few weeks. Not in terms of the virus itself but I think people are going to get very fed up of all these restrictions in daily life very quickly.
I saw a piece on the news there where a shoe shop has a plastic barrier between the shop staff and the child trying on the shoes. She also had a mask, gloves and a plastic visor across her face and I just thought it was so so depressing and over the top.
Again...I want these restrictions lifted, I've always supported it. But until social distancing is lifted..I think we are going be living in a depressing world.
That sounds over the top all right. Surely, keeping a distance and letting the parent fit the shoe would be more sensible. It does worry me that some businesses/organisations are over reacting. Where I work, we can work from home no problem, and management want us to collect equipment from the office to use at home, but local facilities won't allow it. It's ridiculous.

Not sure what you were talking about lol I was talking about hypothetical idealism displayed by you and other posters protecting the 2 metre rule etc. Remember you said govt were "at the right speed" of lifting restrictions when phase 5 was a thing?

And no I did not participate in the protest.

Firstly you didn't read my post, but that is no surprise , you cherry pick constantly from posts and research to suit your narrative.
HSE staff uptake explained in that post , much higher proportion of frontline staff are vaccinated every year as non frontline HSE workers bring down the average percentage, although in some parts of the country still poor enough.
Secondly I never said that about phase 5...right speed was a month ago and related to RO at that time , AND I have always said that I believed the phases would be quickened up depending on how things went , as was said when the roadmap was first announced.
It was you that thought it was tooslowand they're never going to quicken up .
You have just always wanted restrictions gone straight away , no matter what the situation.

Thirdly I would have thought that you would have enjoyed the demonstrations? Fair enough , not a rule breaker then .

Personally, I think it'll be a bit sh*t and like what you describe for a couple of weeks after the big restart - same with pubs and restaurants etc. Not particularly enjoyable.
But I do believe, quite quickly, all of that will go by the wayside.
Nobody will want to be the first to do it, too early, to start basically ignoring all of the bananas rules and recommendations that'll be in place, but after the initial period when TV reports and social media invigilators have got over reporting any minor discrepancies everything will go back to exactly how it was.
It'll happen even quicker outside of the big cities.

The only reason, imo, that everywhere won't just open back as they were before day 1 is because they don't want the negative publicity from Twitter and Facebook if they did. Had all this happened in the 90's no business would inflict it on themselves.

I'll be avoiding most thinks for the first couple of weeks but I am confident it'll all be what we're used to a lot quicker than people think. August bank holiday (assuming the July 20th date stays) I think will look like any other.

have a wedding end of september but haven't seen much mentioned anywhere about restrictions around them. Assume its unlikely to go ahead 150+ attending?

    It’s not looking good unfortunately.

You should be grand. We've seen 2 huge gatherings the past 2 weekends with thousands attending each time and the government are hunky dory with them.

    Not so sure.

I’m best man for a friends wedding that’s due to go ahead on the October bank holiday weekend and they have been told that they don’t expect to see weddings of over 100 happening before then.

They haven’t postponed as if yet but are under pressure to make a decision this week from band etc and don’t know what to do. This time last week they were full sure they were postponing but the sheer number of restrictions that were lifted in Friday has gotten them thinking that it may be fine come October.

    There’s is a similar size wedding 150+

I have no doubt you were being disingenuous when you failed to get his point first time, for what its worth i certainly do see vacination take up by front line workers being a big problem.

I have no doubt you realise that the op who mentioned the flu jab is just flying a kite to try to get a dig in at healthcare workers
Yes there has been an issue with the flu vaccine . The uptake generally has been piss poor both in the community and HSE.
The RCSI hospital group , and Dublin North East have exceeded target vaccinations in the last season mainly due to pressure from occ health and managers.
Other hospitals have not pushed it and unions do not support any pressure .

Totally disingenuous of this poster to bring the flu jab up as there will be a queue a mile long to get a vaccine for this virus as it is ten times more deadly than the flu at recent estimates and a lot more transmissible .

Very good. I liked the first part of his post. The second part didn't bother me so much. Nice to see you are checking up on me.

Not too sure, cancer screenings still on hold for some bizarre reason, probably because some action required from the public service here as opposed to shops.

Watched the piece on the news last night about shops preparations to reopen.

I always hated shopping but if thats what it'll be like, I'll be ordering online.

There was an assistant helping a child try on shoes. She was like a mummy, only her eyes showing. Tight mask and a guard like she was about to strim the garden. And the child was behind a perspex screen as well. You could have let a bomb off on the other side and she would probably have survived.

And then any item of clothes tried on has to be put in a room for 24hrs and steam cleaned.

It's all a bit OCD if you ask me.

I feel for the small retailers. The cost of this will cripple many.

The over-reactive nonsense would actually be quite funny if it wasn't destroying jobs all over the economy.

Just read the lead story on the IT website.

What is the logic on insisting that pubs serve a substantial meal? Surely table service should be enough...?

How does serving a substantial meal help to stop the spread of the virus?

Its basically for the first 3 weeks run as a restaurant with food, in July then everywhere can reopen food or not.

But I agree don't see what changes in 3 week's regarding food or no food

I know it is a bit controversial. But are things still a little bit slow? Bars in Brussels are open today, and were open in Paris over the weekend yet we will need to wait until 20 July here unless you want to have a substantial meal. The 2 metre rule needs to be reduced for public transport and there is still no clarity on flying.

And this controlling behaviour about what is and what is not a substantial meal is insulting to businesses who have made massive sacrifices.

A 2 course meal as well. Hilarious.

My other half was out walking the dog at 7am this morning huge queues at bus stops...and he saw bus whizzing by as obviously only allowed very small numbers.
Delighted to still be working from home...

If that's the case that you have to order a starter and mains just to get served in a pub the a couple of pints could end up costing someone around €35, that will put the majority of people off returning to the pub until all these crazy rules are dropped..
Can pubs afford to stay open for a couple of months paying all their bills when they can't serve or get enough customers to even cover the costs of that?

    Ah look bit by bit.

I looked at the original plan over the weekend and where we are now as of this morning is a world apart.

It took them a while to realise how ridiculous the original plan was in its timings etc but we got there eventually. By the end of June there could be another huge acceleration of things.

Used the bus myself this morning, I'm one of the first stops so was fine but if your not in the first few stops forget about it, we were flying past stops with plenty of people at them. Public transport is a mess this morning by all accounts.
