I certainly am thankful we are not facing a war,with the minority of doomsday posters on this thread i would hate to have them backing me up coming out of the trenches.The war would be long over before they would go over the top.

but 20 km won't take you very far anyway + hotels won't reopen until the 20th of July, right?
So it is only logical that some people will try to go to other countries for holidays before that.

Not to mention if IKEA and homeware stores anything to go by then even hotels could be delayed until 10th of Aug should Tony H hear that there is a mad rush to get a nice 2 night getaway.

We need an Irish Amazon, where indigenous businesses who sell in shops etc. can reach out to those who want to buy their products. Online shopping is the way of the future now.

Doesn't have to be Amazon either, just get your online shop out there.

This two meter bull****. I'll give people as wide a birth as reasonably possible. If its down to one meter officially, I'll still give as wide a birth as reasonably possible! Its just common sense! Do the public here want the government to sing them to sleep and wipe their arse too? Wtf! This uber nanny state from government and a lot of our fellow sheep obviously want it, is disgusting!

The businesses in our towns & cities may not all be Irish owned but they do employ Irish people who live locally and will spend their wages locally, pumping money back into the local economy.

While I wholeheartedly support online businesses at this time, and particularly Irish based ones, we need these chains to stay open so that they continue to employ local people.
Shopping online is only really of benefit to those who work in the warehouse/head office.

Pre corona I used to order online from River Island, Topshop etc quite a bit because they do free delivery but after this I’ll be making more of an effort to go into my local store to buy.

I was up in Sandyford business park earlier, some massive units with closed retailers , where you can keep large distances from others, unlike grocery retailers where many people on top of each other. Watching tonight show now, they are talking about the huge implications this will have on cancer patients and those that dont even know they have it yet. The man on now is going to town on hse incompetence and how poorly things here are run. Rte wouldn't allow that, they'd cut him off

Kinda hard to keep people down forever. I get that. But still... a bit of caution might be warranted to see how things go elsewhere. Just me, and I hope you all enjoy the BH weekend.

Caution is definitely still warranted but people should be allowed the freedom to make decisions for themselves as well. Wear a mask if you want, don't visit busy places if you're uncomfortable doing it, keep the hand hygiene going. All practical measures that allows the country and it's people to keep back to the business of living their lives again.

I do think more and more policitians, economists and business owners and industry leaders are shouting for quicker easing of restrictions.

Jim O Callaghan FF on Ivan Yates Tonight Show in a few minutes calling on Govt to ease restrictions sooner . Keep up the pressure !

There is no guarantee that the move to the next phase would be approved next week. We are not there yet.

If they can't guarantee moving to phase two, which is just further continuation of the lockdown measures, how will they ever come close to moving to phase four and five? without all of them squabbling amongst themselves and causing a drama over nothing.

You can go 20km on phase two but the country will still be on lockdown.

Edgar Morgenroth Prof of Economics was actually laughing at Peter Burke FG for insisting on staying within these restrictions ! Morgenroth stated NO other country is as slow as us ! While everyone is in recession now, all other EU countries have been quicker out of the traps than us ........and most of those countries were hit worse by Covid. They will all recover much more quickly . We need to export , that’s what our economy is based on . We can do nothing while these restrictions are in place !

We've been told that for the last month now, every week. What the fcuk does we're not there yet even mean when we've not been told where there is

We are staying in lockdown and easing gradually in order to spread out the number of infections, not to eradicate the virus. All we really want is to keep the infections at a level where the hospitalised cases can be managed, that is what we were told. This has happened, now we are easing out and reducing the oppressive steps taken initially. However, I don't believe there is any other outcome in the next few months but that everything will be back to normal. For two reasons;

1. Social distancing is a load of arse. It is ridiculous and absurd for people to think that is how things will get back to normal. There is absolutely no practicality in implementing it constantly for the public to go about their business whether it be shopping, socialising, sport etc. Businesses looking to get into providing social distancing assistance tools really won't have too long of a window to make some money from it so best not get too comfortable pivoting into the area.

2. Following this train of thought, then what might stop us getting back to normal? No vaccine and not killing the virus? The virus won't be eradicated without a very extreme worldwide lockdown for months which won't happen. Also there may not be enough people to test a vaccine on, if there was even a chance of discovering one anyway.

Yup he couldn't contain himself, and burke saying it was better to have the likes of dunnes selling clothes rather than have the clothes shops open so that people wouldn't move around, quickly pointed out to him if theres only 1 choice that's where people will go and surely that's worse and somehow he said it's not. So he'd rather higher numbers congregated in Dunnes than lower numbers spread out across more shops

This is why there should be experts like Prof. Morgenroth in the expert group helping to shape decisions on reopening the country out of this Lockdown.

Instead we have the sunbathing Doctor and sleepy Simon at the helm... Who in 12 months time when those of us lucky enough to have a job will be paying higher income tax, USC etc. will still be getting the €100k a year TDs wage and a gold plated pension for life...

Yep I’ve said this all along. I don’t believe Woodies , Homebase or garden centres should have closed. They only created a huge surge when they opened......as will IKEA when it opens , it’s inevitable . Plus all along those stores were easily able to create distance .

Peter Burke is a joke , saying it’s better to have everyone shopping Dunnes as that way they’re not moving about ? That makes so much sense , if only I’d known !

Sure a lot of our comrades think the government should house them, give them money and basically babysit them form cradle to death.

Phase 2 is just phase 1 with a few twinkly lights thrown around it. Phases 3, 4 and 5 are what we need to be discussing and moving towards right now. That’s when things actually get moving in the country again. Ridiculous to say we aren’t ready to move to stage 2. We’re pretty much already in stage 2 and have been for weeks

Curious, was reading in BBC today that 49% of Germans didn't want the Bundesliga to restart so soon ....
All players and staff are being tested and there is no fans at the matches... I don't see the problem starting it slowly like this.

Separately a colleague told me today it's too soon to see people back out on the streets - my question is to people like this - when should football leagues restart ? when should people go out ?

Because if they think now is too soon, then they aren't going to think August is OK, or September ..... in fact no day till there is vaccine and widely distributed one at that - and that could be 2/3 years away, perhaps longer.

So do these people really think that there should be a lockdown for the next 2 years ? what do they think of the economy, mental health ... etc ?

Don't they see there is other strategies out of this ?
