Typical flu infection rate is 0.1%

That's the fatality rate. Infection is anywhere from 5-20% taking in asymptomatic cases.

A 1% fatality rate would be x10 the flu and most health services struggle during a bad flu season and that's a season..

The Swiss have said the same and even said kids can hug grandparents with little evidence of cases there increasing
Children should not visit grandparents over the age of 65 or with an underlying medical condition for long periods of time,

but a short visit with a hug is allowed. It’s good for the mental wellbeing of all concerned.

    Mad^^^That was from may 11th

Last up date from worldometers 9th may

    1867 deaths

Lets see how that plays out to figures in two to three weeks time.

Interestingly, the daily new cases vary in terms of when they are allocated between the HSE briefing and the digital dashboard - the former gave 107 cases yesterday and 159 today, whereas the latter showed 195 cases yesterday and only 55 today!

You're right, but I was arguing against the suggestion that Covid is 'just another flu'. It self-evidently is not.

It's about 45,000 in last week with capacity for 90,000. There's legitimate things to criticise but maybe do a minimum amount of research before doing so.

Capacity for 90,000 haha don't make me laugh. I know people waiting days for one.

If the capacity is there what's going on?

Would vary depending on what time the cases are reported. Sometimes the briefing in the evening is cases notified as of say 1pm. So anything after 1 is in the next days numbers

So the doctors in the Mater hospital were told they could take no annual leave which they accepted but they are now being told they wont be paid for any leave they cannot take. Is this not illegal. Is this how we treat our frontline staff.

Translation - seeing the widespread antibody study in Spain is indicating a 1.1% death rate, do the numpties who still believe this is just a slightly more serious flu have anything to say for themselves

I'd imagine some obscure tweet or sketchy "doctor" will be more "expert" to show its "only a flu"

I have a niece in Dundalk who contacted her GP on Friday, had a test Monday and got her results this morning.

This is pretty much always the way it works in the public service, you're allowed carry the leave forward (in 3 year blocks) but you never really get pay in lieu.

Just saw a news report about covid toes, does anyone remember a poster on here months ago saying they had a bad flu followed by toe swellings?

Funny how people get aggravated by comparing it to flu / influenza figures.
Yet they don't get aggravated when figures and stats produced for a second wave of the covid virus are brought out that are totally based on flu/influenza figures.

Tests were done a few weeks ago?

Could be up to 10% antibody now if so

UK medical people put London at 10% last month

Must be lies. Surely the nurse I know who got referred for test Monday morning, tested in the afternoon and got negative results this afternoon is lying also

Theres no point looking at day to day variances

Better to look at the weekly figures.

    April 6th to 12th - 4661 new cases
    April 13th to 19th - 5596
    April 20th to 26th - 4011
    April 27th to May 3rd 2244
    May 4th to 10th 1494

This week I'd say we are looking at between 900 to 1000 cases.

I think there has to be flexibility from employers in this unprecedented situation. Would be interesting to see what WRC would say about it.

It was started on April 27th when there had already been 23000 deaths in Spain. It is also likely that most of those who died in the interim had already been infected by that point so I will stand by the 1.1%figure. Maybe between 0.9 and 1.2. Still a lot more serious than flu

So we are not in a bad place now as far as new numbers are concerned.
I know it'll never happen with the idiots we have running the country but if they started state quarantining all arrivals into the country and issued an order that everybody must wear facemasks in urban areas, public transport, shops etc. then we'd be in a great place and be able to get back near some sort of normal.
We've seen what happens in other countries now with second waves. We need to learn from this and put ourselves out in front of the virus.
There's plenty that have been calling for an end to the lockdown and most of those people are interested in money more than people's lives but they should be behind a push for quarantine and facemasks because, as bad as this has been economically, a second lockdown is a worse economic disaster as it creates huge uncertainty into the future.

Not sure what your point is. I've expressed no opinion on predictions of a second wave.

I had the toes thing in March, before I knew it was a thing. No other symptoms. It bloody hurt, couldn’t wear shoes one day it was that bad. Lasted about a week. Still a bit red but fine. Could have been something else, but very coincidental. Daughter had a bit of a cough that lasted longer than usual but not serious, wife showed nothing. So it could have been it, might not have been.
