    IRL Confirmed Covid cases 1,819
    IRL Confirmed Covid deaths 19

    UK Confirmed Covid cases 14,579
    UK Confirmed Covid deaths 769

What point are you trying to make here? I think it’s pretty clear from the % fatality rate that the UK confirmed cases is way off. They also have 40x more deaths despite only having a population of around 18x ours.

I do get it. I understand that this is a serious thing to hit Ireland. But this is a discussion forum. So its right that we discuss the virus and the measures that are taken. I am of the view that in Ireland we don't need to be as draconian as other countries as our population density is lower as is our population in general.

The key words in your post are: you are of the view, whilst your entitled to that view, however callous it maybe, the medical experts here in Ireland and those in the WHO, disagree with you. I know whose views i'm going to listen to

A significant increase in daily cases in Europe, well over 30,000 today !

The irony is in Sierra Leonne and New Guinea dealt far more effectively with a far more serious threat in Ebola, than the so called developed countries are dealing with the corona virus.

Ebola is containable as it leaves you bed ridden around the time you become infectious

Why does george lee keep calling COVID-19 'Covid-ID' on the news?

It's the equivalent of PIN number or ATM machine. The disease is called CoVID (Coronavirus Infectious Disease)-19.

It's looking like it is not a "growing" problem as more testing is the cause of the increased number of reported cases, it is not likely to do with the virus continuing to spread as much as it was. The virus has been here for weeks and given the measures being undertaken, it is not spreading as quickly as it would've been. In fact, based on the numbers currently as against what Varadker had predicted, we are managing to contain it at a level which enables the hospitals to manage the serious cases.

The virus is only a problem where symptoms are not manageable without medical assistance and this is the approach of the authorities with regard to testing. This then allows the official numbers to stay low which gives people a sense of comfort. However, we are unfortunately not going to be getting back to normal for quite a while it seems.

His original "herd immunity" policy was an incredibly inept and heartless strategy. Probably instigated by Cummins.

It wouldn't surprise me. But then nothing would surprise my with the current Tory crowd in power over there, especially when they have autistic sociopaths like Dominic Cummings in their ranks as senior advisors.

This is part is absolutely key. Only 1.2% of Italian deaths, across all age ranges, had no underlying health conditions (diabetes, COPD etc). It looks like its not only just not killing young people, its not killing healthy old people.

    https://www.epicentro.iss.it/coronavirus/bollettino/Report-COVID-2019_26_marzo_eng.pdf

It seems like this is pretty huge, positive news? Once it gets wider media coverage I'd imagine we'll see a lot of pressure to lift quarantines for the not-at-risk sections of society.

    This is all known already.

The problem with the idea comes when you ask what percentage of old people are 'healthy old people'.
Most chronic diseases become more common with age. The likelihood of having two or more significant conditions is 60% by the age of 75-79 years, and more than 75% by 85-89 years. This is partly because of the way some diseases are defined; hypertension is a sustained blood pressure of over 140/90, and 75% of people over the age of 75 in UK have hypertension.

    link

No politician decided to lock down their country due to excessive caution in suspecting that healthy old people might die. They did it because their health services demonstrably couldn't cope with the exponentially increasing number of people with life-threatening acute lung infections.

Simply ending a lockdown when nowhere near herd immunity means the epidemic will flare right back up again. Infections will again spread through care homes and hospitals, and we'll be right back to the scenes we're seeing in Italy and Spain.

We need a solution, but it's not as simple as just putting the unhealthy elderly somewhere safe for a few months, because that has already been seen not to work.

No point at all, just the latest official tally.

Chief Medical Officer in the UK has it.

    You couldn't make it up.

Most people in the world are going to get it. Hardly surprising that someone in contact with many people would get it.

Being outside in general is fine.... just avoid large groups, crowds. Its pretty easy to do considering the circumstances.
Plus give others space to socially distance.

People have no right to go around two, three, or four abreast, forcing others into the street in an attempt to maintain a 1m let alone 2m separation.

Parents need to bare in mind the children learn behaviours by imitation, teaching them to ignore the needs of others is not good selfish long term planning.

Having seen a clip of Boris, Vallance, Hancock and hordes of media in the same room a few days ago while promoting social distancing they look utterly idiotic in hindsight.

Really and truly have given off an awful message and look where all 3 are at now.

How the public in the UK have any faith in their methods, I do not know.

What are Germany doing right ? They have a relatively aging population like many countries.
Is it really just about numbers of beds?

Greater or less than 58 in ICU on tonight's report will indicate if the above is true or not.

Very likely. But we are well behind the curve.

Idiot reporter on RTE now saying that we have flattened the curve because test results aren't very high. Its nonsense because test resullts relate to one week ago!!

Notification of contacts is pointless as they will already be infectious by the time the test results are in.

We have 10 deaths today. No matter what we do now, this will double every two to three days for the next 14 to 15 days.

This will be 200-300 deaths a day!

School closures happened here just 15 days ago. In my mind that's when everybody started to take things seriously. Up until then, St Patrick's Day parades were still going ahead. Hopefully a serious flattening is to be expected now, no?

Most people in the world are going to get it. Hardly surprising that someone in contact with many people would get it.

But surely as someone who should be an expert on not getting it, notwithstanding that he engages with many people, it just looks like a failure.

Yes, yes we do! Because if we do not things could become unmanageable fairly quickly.

The lillypad analogy explaining exponential growth has put it in stark terms for me @2.30.

You certainly do not want the health system being overwhelmed, because things can get way out of hand very quickly at that stage.
You only have to look at Italy.

From an historical standpoint the first video above mentions the Spanish flu 1918 @6.40. Philadelphia carried on as normal and St Louis shut down the place. Guess what happened?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I see on the rte news - the state of Louisiana in America has a surge of cases and it's believed to be connected with a Mardi gras held last month.

I'm delighted our government cancelled the St Patricks day parades a few weeks ago or we would be the same. They left it late to cancel but at least they were cancelled.
