    He looked grand.

He's attention seeking no doubt. Wants to be a social media sensation. I like the old attitude to pain and suffering that you suck it up, it's yours to deal with and not burden others with your stories. Did you hear about my op comes to mind.

As I posted previously, government needs to impose standards on all chains with sanctions.

Supermarkets measures range from excellent clear space marking, sanitisers etc. and staff protection, to merest gestures and no staff protection, and all combinations in between. Branch managers apparently have power to decide how to select and apply measures (confirmation of that would be appreciated).

Without believable closure threats the chains won't implement good practice across their branches.

Government can hardly preach to private businesses what they are not doing themselves.

+46 deaths in the UK. ( sky news)

54, including 8 deaths in Wales and Scotland, no further deaths in Northern Ireland.

Looks like for now as though the UK is closer to the French curve than Italian.

Traffic lights are set up to favour cars over pedestrians here.

Set up to favour cars in the US too but they have rarely jay walk compared to us.

I expected them to be better, look what I got from dunnes today:

I was in Dunnes earlier and they have a good setup from the way they control entry to queuing etc and they had the gloves etc out and available. Overheard some staff wondering about their hours and social distancing. The reality is there is no perfect solution unless you rip out the shops and rebuild them to provide a lot more distance for a lot less stock. But they're clearly taking it seriously and so were the other shoppers.

That's fair enough but If they are following HSE guidelines you can't really fault them. I know a lot of staff in my agency aren't too pleased but that's the way we're being told it's going to be. If eventually the HSE advise masks I'm sure we'll get them.

maybe, but what they put in the lidl is just a joke, they could as well save themselves 50 quid and don't put these plexi shields at all.

Given that almost every one of their export markets are currently in various flavours of lockdown , probably not great to be honest..
Doesn't matter in the context of this thread; they'll be moving around and working, so what will be more interesting in this context is a possible resurgence in Covid-19. Other governments and their people will see how this will pan out, for good or bad, however this will have to tempered by the fact that China is a near totalitarian state, with strict enforcements of rules. Having said that, if there is a large uptick even with strict rules....

Haven't been in one. What's it like?

I was in a large Tesco the other day and there wasn't even hand sanitizer to use. No attempt at even trying to implement any form of sanitizing

If, or more likely when, the UK goes into lockdown then so will we.

You're kidding right?! The UK are 2 weeks behind the first case in Italy, we were probably a week. The swiftness of the measures put in place so far have meant we are way ahead in terms of the UK and even Italy at the same point of them putting their measures in place (Social distancing, school closer etc).

Lock everything down absolutely ASAP. We are/have been our own country in this crisis, although still young I have the upmost confidence in those in charge in this particular instance, you have to be it is all we have! If you are staying at home you are doing your part for Ireland.

I forgot to mention re Dunnes, they had a lad out with a backpack of sanitiser spraying and wiping down the trolleys, which was very impressive.

Government can hardly preach to private businesses what they are not doing themselves.
When has that ever stopped them?

However I'm not suggesting preaching, they tried coaxing and that didn't work, it's now time for mandatory sanctions to ensure compliance.

    One theory...

" in Germany, elderly people who die are not necessarily given postmortem examinations for coronavirus, while in Italy reportedly everyone who dies is tested."

There's probably a large variance in practices for this kind of thing between the various states in Germany

    Yes.
    And:

The Robert Koch daily report for Germany can be downloaded from this page: https://www.rki.de/DE/Content/InfAZ/N/Neuartiges_Coronavirus/Situationsberichte/Gesamt.html
I have just quickly Google Translated this: "Hospitalisation was reported in 1,404 of the 16,450 reported COVID-19 cases (9%) "

This hospitalisation rate seem quite low - compared to other Countries.

Erm, the percentage of patients in ICU has gone down because the confirmed cases have rocketed. With lag a good chunk of them are going to need care too.

    Not how % work.

In my local Tesco there was a staff member at the self-service area wiping down the whole area between each customer ( the touch-screen , the bagging area etc.).

A lockdown is certain to happen, just a question of when and for how long. Accept it when it comes.

Yes I think it's inevitable too, but it's important to get the timing right to get the maximum effect.

There are lots of people here who seem to be aroused by the idea and are screaming for it and are not looking at the bigger picture.

What does one do after 6 weeks of lockdown and numbers continue to rise.

How does the state ensure civil order?

Can we cope we other health issues caused by inactivity and people's mental health.

Remember the countries that have locked down already are further along the curve than us .

It's beyond me how they are not doing the online grocery shopping. They had years to catch up with Tesco.
