Just for now to help your Dad could you give her an old shirt of your dads and ask her to put it on over her uniform ? Then she removes it and you wash it as hot as you can .

How does that keep her safe ??

At least she is not wearing the same clothes treating every patient . It would be the same as a plastic apron in fairness .

Sorry, but this post is haunting me, so you've all gone back to work in the office as per normal, and that the whole thing is an exaggerated dream?

Please clarify, in case I've got the wrong end of the stick.

Just re-read the post - it's all there.

I heard from my grannys neighbors cat that the army have been deployed, and were instructed by varadkar to shoot on sight anyone seen trying to go into a shop.
Supposed to be enforced from 11am.
I’m not chancing it lads.that cats got its paw on the pulse.

Sorry but I don't believe this.

And it does flatten the curve -- but not nearly enough. The death rate from the disease is cut in half, but it still kills 1.1 million Americans all by itself. The peak need for ventilators falls by two-thirds, but it still exceeds the number of ventilators in the US by 8 times.

That leaves the actual death toll in the US at right around 2 million deaths. The population of Houston. Two Civil Wars. One-third of the Holocaust. Globally, 45 million people die: 7.5 Holocausts, 3/4 of World War II. That's what happens if we rely on mitigation & common sense.

Losing 0.6% of the population is preferable to 18 months of economic destruction waiting for a vaccine.

Comparing the US losing 2M people to a war or a holocaust is nonsensical, 2.6M people die every year there in a normal year - do we say there's 'half a holocaust' happening each year?

We are letting emotion rule our decision-making.

A few people have discussed this with me. There are a good few of us, in our late 40's, reasonably fit and recently lost our jobs who are wondering if there is any way we can join the fight, as it were, against the pandemic. I wonder would the likes of us would be any good in the RDF, for example. My old man is ex Army and he seems to think that the RDF may relax their age limits in order to recruit older and more experienced folk Into the ranks in order to free up the younger guys if needed. I'd join up in a heartbeat, I could drive, do admin work, logistics, whatever.

Monday was quiet, but not surprising given Tuesday was a BH.

Back to normal in our office today numbers-wise, sensible precautions being adopted but it appears the apocalyptic 'end of days' scenarios have been greatly exaggerated.

Unless you work in Public Service, this emergency legislation going through on Thursday is exactly what we need for companies like the one you currently work for.

    Economic activity will eventually recover.

You can't recover a dead person particularly a dead parent.

Jesus I hope when we are all old, someone like you isn't in charge.

As for those who say letting old people die will ease the pensions burden, those elderly people paid into their pension and taxes all their lives. They've earned any pension they get.

It is a bit frustrating alright...

I think it benefits everyone to back up claims with a source, that's all.

Not that i put too much weight in the Mirror, either, btw ;)

It will be a lot more than 0.6 percent if it’s left run it’s “natural” course.

Ok everyone, so far on this thread I have been just posting my views, I want to inject a little security into peoples minds.

I happen to work at management level for a food company that supplies 40% of chicken on the island, we have robust contingency plans in place and adaptation of our production processes worked out to ensure there will never be a shortage of supply.

Discussions have been had at government level about the security of the supply chain to ensure the business keeps going and I know the same has been had in our competitor companies.

Between a few major indigenous Irish companies we have the ability if the very worst case scenarios play out to supply food onto Irish shelves that will see the population get by albeit it would have to be with government intervention to ensure rationing of product.

    stay safe and positive all.

Like I said, driven by emotion. All of us, parents or not, have to die of something.

Our economy will recover pre-crisis levels of GDP - but we will never get back the lost output. The debt we will generate will last for generations. Capital will be destroyed, investment will dry up. Young people will suffer reduced earnings their entire lives because of this.

Lives are precious, but they’re not priceless.

Is this the new version of “Shure, it’s only the flu” or the “This is all being overblown by panic merchants” from the first Covid-19 thread ?

And did you steal your first sentence from the movie Shreck ?

There is a lot of fear out there at the moment, which is understandable. But do remember,

    1) People saying that 2m or more Irish will get it is just pure speculation at this point. There is just over 200000 cases in the whole world at the moment. New cases have dropped in China and Italy seems to be possibly levelling off now.

    2) If 2m Irish do get it, you still have less than 50% chance of getting it.

    3) If you do get it, it’s fairly mild for up to 90% of people. Even when it’s serious, you can still make a recovery with hospital treatment.

The numbers are very much on your side.
The best thing to do is try to stay isolated, particularly if you’re elder or have poor health.

Since that post the Cork sequence has vanished from the nextstrain website - looks like someone may have uploaded the wrong sequence.
The rest of the post still stands, though it's a bit weird to see so many thanks for an attempt at explaining phylogenetic trees. There's no accounting for taste.
    Thanks !

Wonder what happened to the Cork - Wuhan sequence !

So the three Irish cases are as follows (please correct me if I am wrong):
-the Dublin one was originated via contact with the Netherlands and/or Bavaria (via Italy)

-one from Limerick was originated via England and/or the Netherlands

-second one from Limerick is 100% from the Netherlands

Sure all they're doing is spreading the virus, no sign of them following McDonalds lead at all, business first

No official recommendations from HSE re ppeople for home helps! Tried to fob me off with contacting my public health nurse who 'might know something different.' I pointed out that as there were no official guidelines what could she know? Have contacted my td. Will be call the home help office for the official stance then going public

Official message from the state: Protect our elderly and chronically ill.

Official action: Send in walking petri dishes to them to deliver their care .

Leo Varadakar really needs to take a step back and think about what he is saying on national TV, the calm before the storm is he for fcuking real as if many people aren't already panicking and anxiety through the roof that was the single worst thing he could have possibly said live on TV and i see he's getting serious stick for it too, between him and that other parasatic bas**rd Michael Martin who only the other day suggested that a government should be formed ASAP to tackle this crisis, so hungry for power even with something as serious as this will do anything to get in.

2.8M deaths in 2017, ~75% of those were attributed to 10 causes.

So, 2M deaths attributed to one cause is quite significant...

I don't necessarily agree with the holocaust comparison either, but it does put it into the perspective of "number of deaths due to a single cause".
