109pc right chinese middle class are clowns new wealth, imo they may have travelled to get eu hospital if they got sick... better chances than in china...

Time to ban them. Tourist money isn't worth taking risks like this. It's cost millions already, cancelled events, enormous economic impacts, without even getting into the lives lost.

Funny how you're not allowed to board a flight with nail scissors in your hand luggage in case you use them as a weapon, but let's just let in hordes of people from developing countries with little to no hygiene standards...what could go wrong?

Close the border completely. Cancel all public events. Close schools and work.

Ruin the economy and send us back to the 70's resulting in more misery than the corona virus could possibly inflict.

So basically your saying fúck anyone in a high risk group, "Brand Ireland" is more important.
I've said this already, I'm not overly concerned about myself but I am for some close family and friends who are high risk. I think most people would make sacrifices to protect loved ones. Dublin has reached peak tourism, I'd welcome a few less around.

All the governments around the world are telling the organization's not to mention the C word, because if you cancel you open up a raft of insurance claims, so they won't cancel events where possible like paddys day and when they have to cancel like they will with the Olympics they will wait til the last minute

And what about all the Irish currently skiing in Italy, or visiting there for work or to see family? Do we just lock out our own citizens for the next 6 months? Many could have been there two weeks before the outbreak really took hold.

Keep in mind the two cases we have in Ireland are Irish people who've brought it home with them, not Italians here on holidays. Are you saying we should just close the borders and keep Irish people out, friends and family?

No. Nobody is saying that at all. It's a strawman

Does anyone understand that if you try to reduce a risk that doesn't mean you have to eliminate it totally.

The argument seems to be shut down everthing or take no precautions at all. You can't postpone anything because some people will still come. So let's do nothing.

Well said. Some people would rather no restrictions than even a minimum amount. Business owners perhaps? Or like Dr Mcconkeys deplorable interview on prime time I think it was on 18 February. "Sure we can't see o anything it will need up the economy" or words to that effect.

Realistically who in the right mind would do that? It's too much hassle. Airports bring out the worst in people sometimes. It's ridiculous and daft to fly eg from Italy to Germany or France or London and onwards to Dublin. It's absolutely ridiculous and no one in the right mind would do that.

Genoa to Nice is a 2 hour drive.
Turin to Nice/Geneva is a 3 hour drive.
Many people in Galway fly out of Dublin (2.5 hour drive to a manky car park miles from departures).

I hate Communism and I hate the Chinese Government.

I feel sorry for the people of China living under that bunch of Mafia but only the Chinese people can take them down.

The USSR and the Eastern Block fell.

Paddy's day won't go ahead no matter what they say now imo. It'll be literally like that dog 'everything is fine' meme with the cases in other countries even if we get away with a lag before then.

Yep, if global trends play out here we’ll quickly hit double digits and will have no choice. Likewise the Olympic committee are stalling on making a hard decision, if this thing doesn’t fizzle out by early April it’ll be cancelled.

As someone said over the last few days “whatever we do before before the pandemic will seem alarmist and after inadequate”

Great report from Wuhan this evening on the C4 news would frighten the bejasus out of ya!

Yeah let's mitigate the risk airport by airport, region by region and then country by country and then nationality by nationality then we can restrict people of a certain age etc etc. Don't tell the virus our plans. We cannot close borders in the modern world for months on end. It's not feasible.

Not everything, goods are ok, mainly flights from affected areas. Most are non essential anyway.

    Hopefully. Although, Singapore.

Also, the temps in Qom, Iran right now, are about our summer temps or higher, high teens or low to mid twenties.

Not sure if the numbers across regions like Africa or India are due to lack of testing, higher temperatures or just the time lag.

    Still so much uncertainty.

It's not just temperature it's also UV light and countries in the northern hemisphere still have short daylight hours.

I have lived with the mistaken impression that the first responsibility of government in a democratic society was to protect and safeguard the lives of its citizens.

That HSE news conference was a disgrace.

But I suppose it is nice to know what the governments and HSE's real priorities are.

    - Business is more important than citizens lives.

    - Cattle health is more important than citizens lives.

    - Older people - f*uck em

    A sad day.

This is absolute nonsense. Business is not more important than citizens' lives. If there's a recession, the poorest citizens will suffer first. Poverty kills. And it will kill a lot more than covid19, this year, last year, next year, every year.

We are still not restricting travel to and from Italy. I don’t understand the logic of not restrictions being put in place.
Doing so would expose the state to legal action from airlines that operate those routes. Also freedom of movement is kind of a cornerstone of EU citizen rights - it's not possible for an EU state to deny access to any person that has already passed within the borders of another EU state.

It's really quite simple. You say nobody from origin X. Then check passport on entry. Not rocket science. They should have a social responsibility and not spread the infection. Same way absenteeism costs billions every year cause people go to work when they are sick (mostly to be seen).

I've recently advised relatives not to travel for our son's Birthday. This was in early January. They are in northern Italy. They thanked me when it all start kicking off last week.

They started SARS and didn't learn from that. If they want to live like they do, they could at least do the rest of us a favour and stop travelling to Europe to take in 21 countries in a week so they can go home and boast.

Current outbreak in Italy 100% down to people like that.

The SARS fake epidemic of 2003. You are trying to re-write history there.

It's about the message the government is sending to the public as well. A ban says 'we are fully against travel to and from affected areas', whereas as it stands you'll have people saying to themselves 'ah shur it can't be that bad if they're still allowing flights, I might as well!'

China is a superpower not a developing nation.

Hate to break it to you, but it's still considered a developing nation by the WTO. Still millions there living in poverty, enormous inequality, hygiene and health and safety light years behind what's acceptable in the EU, atrocious pollution.

You might want to read a book sometime.

If that's not enough to stop all flights to Italy at this stage I dont know what is.

The vast majority of cases in either European countries all originate in Italy

We shouldn't be stopping all flights to Northern Italy, the whole region should be closed off for a few weeks.

People should remind themselves of this:
China shut down Wuhan on 22nd January with 550 or so cases. This grew to 70,000 cases three weeks later before the slow down in new cases started.

Italy now has over 3000 cases and only now are we seriously talking about closing schools, universities, etc.

Do you have wash hand basins? I say lots of employers have tried to get sanitiser but it’s sold out. Use a tissue or kitchen roll to open doors.
