I do actually agree with you but I'm somewhat mixed or somewhere in between on it. I'd entertain the idea that we should be testing everyone with a temperature.

    Ah come on.

Seeing as how William and Catherine have just arrived on their royal visit to Ireland can we presume they have been/are being thoroughly tested for the virus?

I heard they were not fussed on visiting Cork anyway. Don't panic ok?

Coronaviruses are a family/type of viruses. There are plenty of them and have been plenty in the past.

This is a new one. That is the "novel" part.

It will not last 100 years! There will be a vaccine in approx 12 months and the only thing stopping it from being eradicated will be the anti-vaxxers.
Will the anti vaxxers be looking to get that one?

That's a nice quick way of taking samples from people.

What happens then when tens of thousands samples arrive at the NVRL to be processed.

Those that may be actually infected may have to wait days or weeks for results.

I don't think people fully understand the testing process. It's not like a pregnancy test with instant results then and there.

Or with the HSE’s record, they might never get their results at all.

I'd be far from a supporter of Leo or FG, but the only ones getting into a panic are those on social media and threads like this.

Most people are (rightly!) just going about their day and taking a few extra precautions like washing their hands more than normally or not booking a weekend getaway to places like Milan.

It's the current fearmongering and posting of any and every report on this from anywhere in the world that will create a real panic. I know that most people here are concerned and trying to be helpful and informative, but everyone needs to take a step back and assesss the situation.

    - 1 confirmed case in the Republic
    - who may have gone to band practise (personally I'd blame the parents before the HSE)
    - Updates are being issued (not helped by the confusing mess of rumor and speculation rampant on social media)

    That's it so far!

We will certainly have more cases, and this thing will grow, the UK are already priming the public for this. Even if it only reaches the level it has in South Korea and then drastically improves it will be very upsetting. I don't want to hear that it's just a few frail disposal people who will be killed off either, that rhetoric is pervasive and utterly ridiculous.

And yet every time it's mentioned the word "Novel" appears with it. If we now know about it why persist with the word? I'd suggest it was the name they gave it until they came up with COVID-19.

This is a long thread. I've been hearing on the radio and TV that the flu kills more people every year that the corona virus so people should just relax. If the flu is more dangerous does anyone know why they closed a school here for 2 weeks just because 1 person got the corona virus? They don't do that with flu. Have I missed something?

Given the outcomes for some with Pandemrix you could see why people might be reluctant to be vaccinated if and when a vaccine becomes available.

The virus is called SARS-COV-2. As its so like the virus SARS-COV.. Only more infectious.
The disease it causes is COVID-19.

There is a lot we know about the flu. There's not very much known about this yet and it's not ideal to have it spread all over the planet.

The fact that it's a new strain and they don't fully understand the way it's all going to "pan out" apparently

This new virus is more deadly than flu, so they don't want it to suddenly spread, as there is no vaccine or effective treatment just yet.

The US just don't want to look extremely stupid as each day goes on they can hardly test anyone properly (so their suspect cases numbers would look pretty terrible in a few days time) meanwhile the Koreans have done tens of thousands and have some automated testing spots.

So they have a patient that has possibly been infected from exposure in the community and the HSE are only going to test those who come back from a covid-19 hotspot displaying symptoms.

Maybe this thread should follow the course of some weather event threads. A reasonably technical, factual one and one for general discussion.

All the sizeable minority who love being smart a*ses and want to crack one liners can be quarantined in general discussion. A lot of what you read through are comments 13 year olds make when trying to be cool but are really lacking in confidence at the back of it.

Surely, we'd need three threads, with one for the conspiracy theories as well, sez he cracking a one-liner!

I think this idea was put forward a few times now.

The issue is, everyone wants to be taken serious so will post in the so called factual thread. And I don't think the mods want to spend all their time deleting posts on one out of the many threads they have to mod.

    Novel == "new"

COVID-19 is the disease caused by the virus. The actual virus is called "SARS-CoV-2". (Think of the distinction between HIV and AIDS, former being the virus and the latter being the disease). SARS-CoV-2 is a corona virus. It is the most recent to be identified/encountered which is why it is currently the "novel" or new one.

If you buy a new BMW car, you can refer to it as your new car. If you buy a different Mercedes car in 5 years, you will then presumably refer to that one as your new car.

i.e. when you call something "new", you don't associate that qualifier with it until the end of time!

Another part of the reason is that China insisted it not be called the Wuhan Coronavirus or Chinese Coronavirus as originally planned. The WHO agreed stating it could cause racism or affect China's reputation.

600 Merck employees in France asked not to go to work as one colleague was tested positive after returning from Italy.

I’d say we’ll have similar occurrences here in the near future.

But it also shows the type of person I think he is - a little bit of a panicker ... hey I can relate, but it explains the tone of a lot of his videos ..

Distribution of laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the EU/EEA and the UK, as of 3 March 2020

    novel-coronavirus-cases-EU-UK-3-March-2020.PNG?itok=pyRre0T2

Big drop in the numbers of daily cases in Europe today, mainly because of Italy's smaller numbers.

Did Italy change their reporting procedures ?

Good news or statistical glitch ?

    Time will tell.

What's weird is the HSE are just sending letters, yeah that's the way to inform people fast. Maybe their telegram system wasnt working for some reason....

As someone else mentioned it was an attachment in an email.

One of the parents of those children was on with Ciara Kelly and she said they first got a phonecall letting them know and telling them to isolate their daughter but that they didn't need to isolate themselves or other children. She was told they'd receive a letter and a short while later she got that letter in an email.

When she then heard it was a hoax, she was very confused but fortunately she felt it was just too elaborate (ringing all the parents individually) to truly be a hoax, so she continued to follow the guidelines.

It wouldn't be great if parents did believe they'd been the victim of an elaborate hoax and allow their children to go about their day as normal.

The coronavirus seems to have a lot higher percentage of people who catch it dying.
Possibly 0.1% for flu versus 2% for coronavirus.

Could it not just be because the day is not over and more case are to be reported? Or is there a daily cut-off time for these stats?
